Not sure if it's been explicitly said in the show yet, but when people talk about "raising the Fyrd" that's the Saxon army. Basically every dude who can fight gets called up for service for a few months until they have to go back home and bring in the harvest. Seemed like you two weren't sure what it meant so figured I'd chime in 😂 loving your reaction to this series, it's a real hidden gem!
It's a tough situation Alfred is in but Odda is completely right. You don't sacrifice the whole nation to save one person. Giving up the amount of money they were would afford the largest army the Vikings ever had to overthrow them with.
Just as it seemed you might not know the Fyrd is essentially the Citizen army of the Saxons, generally they are badly armed and don't have armour but are very numerous and quite good at looking like a big scary and powerful army when they aren't particularly, Wessex was made up of 11 (if I remember correctly) countries one of which and I believe the second most powerful being Devonshire (The most powerful being Somerset there was also Hampshire, Kent, Wiltenshire, Dorset and Berkshire etc) which is ruled over by the old drinking dude. The other part of the Saxon army are the house warriors not fully professional soldiers as you would think of them today most would still be on farms but on the land of a lord they owed fealty to the big differences are 1) equipment and training 2) term of service the Fyrd only owed a certain time span of military service every year which (again from memory) was 3 weeks while the house warriors technically had unlimited terms of service per year. Lastly and just because it's a random piece of trivia I happen to know at the End of Alfreds rein Wessex maintained a permanent garrison in all their fortified towns (Boroughs) which roughly equated to 25% of the military age men of the country (about 28,000 men) if nothing else that should give quite a good idea of the issues the country had been having with the Danes.
The scene with Odder waking up and seeing 2 guys in bed with him is hilarious 🤣 especially the look on his face. I dislike the Queen because if it was someone else daughter she would have said let them die.
"they don't know how to pretend" LOL you should watch this scene from an old crappy vikings 'comedy' Erik the Viking (ironic it's the same name) ua-cam.com/video/sGrDHI0orKE/v-deo.html prob the only amusing part of the whole movie.
There's always a shade of grey in these situations, but I personally wouldn't survive an entire kingdom just for the sake of a single life. I would need to be more rational than that.

yeah damn it's tough. I'm glad I'm no royal or king or queen
the 2 part videos are much better than just 1 video tbh
It's also risky because it's a way of getting around the rules.... or else you could make 5 parts and show the whole episode
I can't wait for y'all to start season 3 omg!! It's a doozy of a season and very, very emotional!!
