The British High Court in London has put the extradition of Julian Assange on hold until the United States provides assurances that he would get a fair trial in the U.S. without facing the death penalty. If those assurances are not met, Assange will be granted the right to a full appeal hearing. Speaking outside the court Tuesday, Stella Assange called for the Biden administration to “drop this shameful case” against her husband. “Julian should never have been imprisoned for a single day,” she said. We speak with MP Jeremy Corbyn, who led the U.K. Labour Party from 2015 to 2020 and who has been calling for all charges against Assange to be dropped. “The pressure needs to now go on to the Biden administration,” Corbyn says. “If Julian goes down for this, every serious journalist around the world is going to be slightly more cautious about exposing war crimes, about exposing corporate greed.”

Here was someone who had expressed support for Assange in the past, who had a truly mass following, and who was given the platform of two general elections on which to make a case for his freedom.
Instead, Corbyn responded to his election as Labour leader by drawing a veil of silence over Assange. Between July 2015, two months before his election as leader, and April 2019, Corbyn made no public comment on the WikiLeaks founder’s situation.
In that month, when Assange’s seizure from the Ecuadorian Embassy by British police on April 11 became a world news story, Corbyn was finally forced to comment. But it was the political equivalent of pulling teeth.

The Legal system in the UK was required to uphold an international arrest warrant. Assange has a record of running and that is why he is in.prison. Don't forget he ran to the Ecuadorian Embassy and stayed for 5 years of his own accord. He was ordered to leave because he was behaving in a very improper way to staff - female staff, btw! He is held pending a decision to agree or not to extradite him. The UK courts are not deciding if he guilty of the offences he is alleged to have committed. Assuming the US give assurances regarding the two matters, then he will be heading west. If not he stays, and will be released here in the UK. Step foot in say France thecwhole process of arrest, detained and face deportation will start all over again.
Jeremy is a good politician. It is a shame he is no longer head of Labour.
