I recently randomly picked up Gouken a few days ago when I wanted to learn a shoto character. I love his play style, he'll probably end up my main. Thanks for the tips guys!
Also, thanks for the great guide. I main Gouken and he is definitely an interesting character, considering that most of his normals don't cancel into other normals (with a few exceptions like LK+LK or LP+LP). Some days I think it would be a bit easier to play as Ken or Ryu but Gouken is just too awesome. Some of his matchups are almost a given win (particularly against grapplers like Zangief and T Hawk granted that you keep them away).
I like vids like this. It's hard to keep track of the the tricks so many characters have in SF4 and there always seems to be so many things to learn, even with characters you have mained for years. About the cross up short in the corner, I have to block it as a crossup but be ready for him to land in front? Is that how it works? And throw is free if I block it? Is it the same for all shotos?
That is indeed how it works. But the throw is not free, Gouken is just forced to tech, so he loses his pressure. If somebody jumps at you with a light kick, you can almost always grab them out of their next button, depending on how deep it hits. You have to keep in mind that the opponent might jump/backdash/dp though to avoid the tech situation.
I know this has probably been said but Gouken has a parry. Also I have seen many videos of Gouken closing in without problems. Folks underestimate the guy that trained the 2 popular selections.
Thanks! I've hit a wall with my Gouken to where I feel like it is all rinse and repeat, and I'm not learning anything as much anymore. I'm having to play other characters, and take what I learn from them, and apply it to my Gouken where possible. Yeah he has a problem opening people up. I just recently found out about that overhead meaty setup, and trying to incorporate it into overhead xx cr. LP xx h. Tatsu xx FADC xx jab dash under reset to the other side as another can opener. Still trying to get my timing more consistent though. : /
Solid advice for playing gouken. I personally feel gouken is a good character that should be used in certain match ups like guile Zangief dalsim poison Hugo lol Hugo but he has horrible match us like Blanka bison adon YUN SCREW YUN Abel pretty much any rush down or mix up character or anyone with really good anti fireball moves. Gouken is a good character to have as an alt but not as a main. Goukens strength is his zoning if you can get passed that and not get hit by ex tastu and parry you got him beat...
Cool vid bros. ive mained gouken since super, and the struggle is real. But I've always used Ultra 1... Am I doing it wrong? Cos a lot of times I see the pros go at it they're almost exclusively ultra 2.
It isn't so much about whether it's a right choice or not but it depends somewhat on who you're facing as well as your personal playstyle. U1 deals more damage but with less ways to land it (although still plenty enough for it to still be good) whereas you can land U2 off a MP/HP fireball if they jump into it without having to get close at all. The stun off U2 isn't all that meaningful for the most part as most people either won't get hit by it raw, won't block it, or simply won't get hit after getting hit by it. So if you're more focused on zoning your opponent, then U2 might turn out to be a better choice for you, if not, then U1 should work fine as a middle ground.
Yeah like than said on ultras. Ultra1 sometimes is indeed harder to get out. The most common way of doing it is through back throw. But that requires you to be up close and hoping they don't tech. Another is his ex senkugoshoho in mid screen can be fadc into u1. In fireball game mid screen you would have to fadc to u1 in connect. Also if your getting to the corner you can combo to ex senkugoshoho lp fireball fadc to u1. I've pretty much went through the whole roster in street fighter since vanilla. Stopped going around since I bopped into El fuerte and Blanka for mind games. Hope you non zoners get some mileage out of this. :-)
Sorry just wanted to add more here. Basically gouken's tasumaki gorasen and ex senkugoshoho are mainly links to his u1. Yeah just go to training mode and try variety of combos to see what works. Can't explain gouken fully here. Laters! :P
As a Gouken player, I rarely use U2 because I play a more aggressive style where I keep my Ultra as either a counter on a read or as just a combo tool. The struggle is VERY real, but when you get your opponent against the wall, that's when you can get the scary damage. As a plus for U1 as well, you can get ridiculous range on the full animation, if Ryu throws a hadou and you are just barely outside c.MP range, you can just slam U1 and catch his hands. Also, I suggest learning how to abuse the counter. It's hard to zone a Cammy, but if you master your counters, she is completely useless besides spinning knuckle, in which case you can EX tatsumaki.
I set the PC on training mode to Auto-Block (blocks after the first hit) and the combo in the corner at 12:40 only works if the character doesn't block...after doing EX Senkugoshoha -> MP fireball -> standing LK, the PC then blocks when I try to do forward+MP, etc. Does this work in a match up? I would imagine it would only work if the opponent isn't holding back to block which I imagine she/he would. Thanks for any help.
There was a "bug" or "feature" in Gouken's backthrow that had an untechable window in 2012 and earlier. It is now teched like a normal throw, and it's slow, hence U1 is a lot less reliable. U2 has more utility, but I like having the ability to throw shin-sho if possible, so I use both.
Ryu sees little play because evil ryu is better, and gouken is a defensive character that crapcom just had to screw up and buff his offense. Gouken's counter should b qcb+p because defense isn't predictive its reactive.
Been going through the Gouken struggle since Vanilla, good to see a vid like this for the old man!
I'm so happy I found this. I just picked up gouken like 3 days ago and this really helped out my game. thanks guys!
Great tutorial. It'd also be cool if you two played each other in a few games after to show some of the info in play.

Man, I really hope Cross Counter keeps piling up these tutorial vids, especially for mid/low tier characters.

Great vid, thx for posting it. I started playing Gouken because of Veloc1raptor.

Far above my level but still very interesting and I will try hard to do even 1 of these moves/combos.

Finally a tutorial I can actually use
I play Gouken too

Daric its a reset, not a combo
Saltguy
Yeah, but the reset only works if they aren't blocking, right?
Resets are by definition blockable
I'm partial to W ultra with Gouken. Most of the top Gs go with U2 now because backthrow is easier to tech in ultra.
It’s easier to tech? Why? Wouldn’t using W be useless because the scaled U1 damage would be similar to a normal U2?
