    Such a clear and reasoned tutorial. Camera work is great, too.

    As usual you are an amazing analytical knitter!

    I’m a continental knitter but always knit using the leading leg, I pearl using the bottom leg.

    Finally I got it , have watched many other videos and nothing was clicking in my brain on how to wrap those stitches , it was so confusing!Maybe now I can finally start on that toe up sock !

      Good luck with your socks! (You can always substitute another closed cast on, as well, such as the Turkish CO, which is SUPER easy)

    Thanks again for another great tool for my knitting tool box. I would love to see something about knitting replaceable heels and toes. I think that this was an Elizabeth Zimmerman idea, but I haven't seen it done. Thanks, Julia

      Thank you for your suggestion! (I think I could devote an entire channel just to videos on socks!) I will add this to my list of ideas. :-)

    Thank you so much for this video! I've watched a boatload of these videos, and as others have commented, this is really the clearest and easiest to understand. I also like that you go at a perfect pace for me, and don't include a lot of extraneous chatter-just simple explaining as it's needed. I've really been wanting to make a string market bag, but how to do the bottom to start has had me stumped. I feel very confident that I'll have no problem with it now! Yay!

    I have come back to watch this excellent series about closed vs provisional cast ons because I now have a need to work a Figure 8 cast on. What I was not sure of during the video is when you said you tried to equalize the size of the two sets of stitches top and bottom during their creation by using a smaller needle - did you mean both tips were smaller compared to the project tip size, or did you mean that the bottom loops were created on a smaller needle tip while the top loops were created on the project tip size? If you did not mean differential tip sizes during the cast on creation, what would be likely to happen if a smaller tip size were used in making the bottom stitches? I see how effective it is to pull out the slack (though understand it might be tedious to do in a large number of cast on stitches) - but would using differential tip sizes with smaller on the bottom alleviate that maneuver from being needed?

      I probably meant to use smaller tips for both, but I think you can guess what I'm going to suggest you do to answer this particular question for yourself. :-)

      :-) I can indeed guess and the answer ends in "S", as in Yes! and starts with "S" as in Swatch! I sure can and will! I was just hoping there was a pre-existing answer as a starting point. I promise to come back to report results of my needle size experimentation if my swatching helps me reach a conclusion. Thanks, Rox!

    How to prevent losing a stitch with JMOC, figure 8, or Turkish cast on?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  4 місяці тому

      You cast on the same number of sts for both halves, so there shouldn't be any loss of sts, as there can be with some other provisional cast on methods.

      When I drop the slip stitch, the next one drops, too.

    Roxanne, I love your lessons on socks and I have a request. I have been trying to figure out how to knit a garter stitch cuff. I knit my socks toe up on circular needles. Various cuffs would be fun to watch too.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому

      Do you mean garter stitch heel? For a garter stitch cuff, you'd just alternate a round of knits with a round of purls.

      Roxanne, I saw a garter stitch cuff for a sock that you sew a strip and then attach it to the sock, but I could not figure out how to attach a garter stitch that is sideways to the leg of the sock. I think I saw that on a dvd of Lucy Neatby. Can you figure that out?

    • @GrandmaMarlayne
      @GrandmaMarlayne 6 років тому

      Yes, this would be a toe up sock. Have you any clever idea on what would be the best way to do this. I am thinking I would knit the bank separately and then attach it from the inside of the sock using a type of mattress stitch because grafting would not be possible. What advice do you have?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому

      In the previous reply, I mentioned the way to do it would be by doing a hybrid graft/seam. You'd work the cuff sideways, and then as you knit up the leg, you'd join the leg to the cuff using a graft/seam combo. Live sts come off the needle as for a graft, but joined to the cuff as for a seam, catching one of the bumps of the garter stitch ridges.

    I appreciate your generosity in taking the time to tape all the instructions you offer but I think you skipped over way too much detail on this one. There is no information about transitioning from the first needle to the second making the video all but useless to the beginner. Some of your other videos are quite useful and I still think your channel should be one of the places to look for help.

    • @RoxanneRichardson

      I'm not sure what information is missing? There are two uses for this cast on: as a provisional cast on and as a closed circular cast on. Using the CO as a PCO is demonstrated first. The transition to the second needle, after knitting only on the first needle for the length needed, is shown starting at around the 6:00 mark Using the CO as a closed circular CO (as for a sock toe) is demonstrated starting at 8:30.

    Your closed cast on seems like an easier way to do judys magic cast on

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 років тому +1

      Well, since Judy's Magic Cast On was created to fix the tension issues of the figure-8 cast on, your observation is spot on! :-)
