I spent a week driving a 2020 Nissan Altima, put over 500 miles on it and took it on a 5 hours trip from Chicago to MI. Here are the things I loved and hated about it! There were some things that pleasantly surprised me, and some things that really irritated me. This was also quite an amusing experience with contrast, I spent the weekend going between 600-700hp cars to this very normal Nissan Altima with a CVT, it did get amazing fuel economy though!

CVT’s are not made for overly aggressive drivers who floor it at every green light, slam the brakes last second at every stop, and slam the damn shifter around while the car is still moving. Other than that, gentle driving goes well with a CVT. Most people abuse their cars though. A LOT.

Tell you what, I'm really impressed with all of these new driver assist options. I was in Florida last weekend and had a new Sonata as a rental. I've had no experience with driver assist other than auto braking and back up alerts. The Sonata on the highway with lane keep and adaptive cruise was a dream. It literally drove itself. Just to test it with no cars around I took my hands off the wheel for a good couple minutes and just let it go by itself and sure enough it was basically driving itself. It did alert me to keep my hands on the wheel though after a bit. I would anyway as I don't fully trust technology but I just wanted to try without hands as a test. It was great. Perfect for long boring drives.

I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 199,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Only problem is Nissan has had the worst CVT's in the market for a long time now, their made by JATCO which has one of the worst reputations in the market. There's reports of many Nissans CVT's blowing far under 100k and them refusing or making it insanely difficulty to claim warranty.

I'm surprised Eddie made a video about a Nissan Altima. Coming from a guy that has had a Audi RS7 and have drove tons of performance luxury vehicles, this is quite a bit new blend to the mix.
the 2015 Nissan Altima was my first car ever and i still own it till this date, this thing will never out-perform any of the mid-spec BMW/Audi's, but one thing i can always appreciate is the Fuel Efficiency that the CVT offers
and for someone who has already gotten use to the CVT, it sort of just becomes second nature and you don't even crave dual clutch or automatic while you're paying literally pennies on the dollar for the amount of gas that you're saving.
Not many people can afford the Audi's and the BMW's, but this video sort of drifts into a category where majority of people might actually take your feedback into consideration while they weigh in their options of what family/4 door/fuel efficient centric vehicles they're going to purchase next.

    • @EddieX
      @EddieX  4 роки тому +4

While I personally may have owned some higher end performance vehicles, I still enjoy driving and evaluating a wide variety of vehicles. My family isn't into cars, they have owned a Ford Flex and a couple Ford fusions, I drive a mercury villager and Ford taurus in high school. I plan on continuing to film as wide of a variety of vehicles as I can!

The only reason I took a test drive of this was for the pro pilot assist and they surely did a good job. The vehicle is worth it just for that if you need that technology to reduce stress on road. Also I found the bose audio system in this much better tuned and punchy than the one in 2018 maxima which I currently have. I am considering to get this as my next lease to keep payments low. This is definitely a bang for your buck in the market with an incredible pro pilot assist feature.

The 2020s with 50-70kish miles are going for about $20k right now which is right in my Price range. I'm currently renting a 2019 Nissan Sentra, and CVTs are mixed bag. They shift very smooth, BUT the CVT gets loud at higher acceleration. Also it has the occasional tendency to hold high RPM, leading to the car accelerating faster than normal after coming from a stop. Good thing the safety feature are top notch!

I like the looks of this thing too except I’m weary of the cvt. However I would think Nissan revised their transmission by now because of all issues people had. Especially with low mileage used Altimas should be considered. I don’t keep cars long anyways at most 5-6 years. By the time a car gets to 80-90k issues will come so I usually trade for a new toy by that timeframe 😎

  • @belaircarguy

Nissan seats are the best. I have a 2018 Altima and drive quite a bit. 3-4 hours at a clip is about average. I have had many sedans over the years, and judge many by the comfort they provide. If I don't have to stop by hour 2 to get out and stretch and walk around to relive back pain, then the car gets a thumbs up. With the zero gravity seats, driving 3-4 hours non-stop is not a problem. Also, my 2018 Altima with the 4 cylinder gets about 38 MPG on a highway cruise. Mixed driving the car still gets 33-34 MPG. Why to to hybrid or other systems, which add complexity and cost? My next sedan will be another Altima also! Just a point on the CVT transmission. My last car was a Subaru with a CVT. I thought the was somewhat jerky - never felt like the transmission knew exactly what gear it should be in. The Nissan is a lot better, and while not the feel of a geared transmission, it is not terrible. Check out an Altima - you won't be disappointed!

I've driven other Nissans like the Sentra, the Versa Note, as well as other CVT vehicles like the Chevy Spark, and last-gen Toyota Corolla and I have to say the new Altima has the best CVT of all of them hands-down. It feels a lot more direct than prior ones - as in, your gas pedal feels like it's actually connected to something. The ratios change decently quickly as well. However, I'd still take a regular automatic any day... OK except the new Camry. The 8-speed in the new Camry is not very smart, to the point where I am not sure whether I'd rather have it or this Altima's CVT. Just for some perspective. :)

Also when I had my Lexus, I got a loaner 2019 ES 350, and the programming of the 8-speed in that car is far better than it was in the Camry. Same transmission, too. Just seemed a lot smoother in the Lexus.

I drive a 2017 Nissan Sentra and I had mines in the shop for body work. I was given a rental of a 2022 and I got to be honest. I felt the interior felt cheap compared to my 2017 Sentra which feels more premium. The materials feel even more cheap than the outgoing Altima. I just feel like the car while it rode good and the speakers in the one I had were already going out, it just felt like a cheaply made car.

I'm just over the CVT hate, sure they aren't "enthusiast" focused transmissions but they're great in city traffic, the thing that bothers me most about CVTs nowadays is the fake shifting they add, it sounds so fake... People complain about Nissan's CVTs but they seem to be like most other cars in terms of reliability, you'll hear a bunch of people talk about failures below 100k, other people (like myself) have Nissans with over 224k & the original trans. Makes you wonder how some people treat their cars.

    If Nissan could
    - Get rid of the CVT on their flagship and popular cars (Maxima, Altima, etc.) and replace it with a 8 or 10 speed auto
    - Offer AWD on the Maxima and the turbo option on the Altima
    - Actually update their cars in a timely manner (not 10+ years before a refresh)
I think people would be more willing to purchase Nissan's again. Everyone I've talked reminiscences about the old Nissan, where they had cool cars and were just as reliable as Toyota or Honda but wouldn't dare step foot in a new Nissan due to what they have become today.

Stop complaining about CVT’s just because it is different from the standards automatics that have been around since the 50’s. It revs up when you accelerate to give you more power, thereby allowing Nissan to put in a smaller, more efficient engine. Believe it or not, not everyone buys a car based solely on performance. Some of us just need to get around comfortably and efficiently. So stop bitching about CVT’s and try to comprehend what it’s like to be a regular plebeian like the rest of us Mr. “it’s not as fast as my Audi”.
