Kew Lunatic Asylum is a decommissioned psychiatric hospital located between Princess Street and Yarra Boulevard in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Operational from 1871 to 1988, Kew was one of the largest asylums ever built in Australia. Later known as Willsmere, the complex of buildings were constructed between 1856 and 1872 to the design of architects G.W. Vivian and Frederick Kawerau of the Victorian Public Works Office to house the growing number of "lunatics", "inebriates", and "idiots" in the Colony of Victoria.
The first purpose built asylum in the Colony of Victoria, Kew Asylum was also larger and more expensive than its sister asylums at Ararat (Aradale) and Beechworth (Mayday Hills). The buildings are typical examples of French Second Empire and Italianate styles which were popular in Victorian Melbourne. Its design was based on contemporary English barracks-style models of asylum planning, such as Colney Hatch. The E-shaped complex of buildings was designed to be elegant, beautiful, yet substantial, and to be viewed as "a magnificent asylum for the insane" with the aim of portraying Melbourne as a civilised and benevolent city whilst avoiding the jail-like appearance of other asylums. These aims were furthered by the use of low Ha-Ha walls and extensively landscaped grounds. Long considered of cultural and historic significance to Melbourne, Kew Asylum and its complex of buildings were registered on the Register of the National Estate in March 1978.
Despite initial grand plans and ideals, Kew Asylum had a difficult and chequered history contributing to several inquiries throughout its 117 years of operation, including a Royal Commission. Overcrowding, mismanagement, lack of resources, poor sanitation and disease were common criticisms during the asylum's first five decades. Out-dated facilities and institutionalisation were criticisms of Kew's later period.
Kew continued to operate throughout the 20th century as a "Hospital for the Insane", "Mental Hospital", or "Psychiatric Hospital", treating acute, long-term and geriatric patients until it closed in December 1988. The main building and surrounding grounds were sold by the State Government in the 1980s and were redeveloped as residential properties while retaining heritage listing.

A very interesting story, and tour . I think it’s worse today ,we have too many people living on the streets with mental issues the hospitals are overwhelmed thanks for sharing 🤪
Our health system is good here, although we also have an issue with Homeless people and mental illness. There is no quick fix I am afraid. Not sure what the solution is. Do we need to have these institution back? There is accomodation for the homeless here, but they don't want to stay in them, they would rather stay on the streets. Hope you are well, have a great day and thank you for watching, cheers ~ Joseph
Beautiful place, Liked it. Thanks for uploading ...

Thanks for watching! Have a great day.
The building is so gorgeous! Such great architecture! That cat had SO MANY BELLS! Haha! My old cat we used to have to put multiple bells on him because we learned how to hold one bell when hunting so it didn't make noise!
That Grumpy Cat was gorgeous and very friendly. They are maintaining the building very well. Glad you enjoyed this episode. Have a great weekend and thank you for watching.
Hello, very cool intro and interesting tour/ Gosia
Thanks for visiting Gosia. Glad you enjoyed this adventure. have. a great week.
Wow bud great upload again my friend
Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it buddy. Have a great weekend 🙏🏽👍🏽🤗
Thank you for this great video. I didn't know you could walk through the grounds. Its a beautiful setting but what a dark history.
Hello Tilly, I was able to walk the grounds as my nephew was residing in the grounds. You are very right about it’s dark history, but out of bad something good has come. My nephew’s apartment is lovely. Thank you for dropping by and watching. Cheers ~ Joseph

Grazie Mille per la visita. Glad you enjoyed the tour. Buona Giornata.
Very nice video. Great information about this beautiful place, though many must have thought of it differently. That was one grumpy looking cat!
Thank you for dropping by and watching. That Cat looked Grumpy, but was pretty friendly. Yes there are many different stories about these asylums, some where not pretty. Glad you enjoyed the video. have a great day.
@@CowboyJojosAdventures Some cats just look like that lol. People too! There was an old asylum near me, all that's left is the foundation and a fruit orchard. People have written that in the evenings the patients would sing as part of therapy, always thought that would make a creepy story.
@@Dagonhills that’s very true 😂 I did a night tour of the Asylum in Beechworth many years ago and those stories were scary. But to think that you commit your wife into an asylum and get a Doctor to state she was insane was a crime in itself. Could you imagine going in never to be released. The experiments and treatments in the early days would have been horrific.
@@CowboyJojosAdventures I've seen that in movies and books and it terrifies me, to be committed. The actual ill patients can be extremely violent. I imagine it happened a lot, sadly I'm not shocked by how people can treat their supposed love ones for various selfish reasons. Still it is sickening. The night video sounds great, I will look for it.
@@Dagonhills I didn’t do an actual video on the night tour as it was pre UA-cam days. But if I ever get up there I would definitely consider doing a video
It's pretty sad about all of those wives being left there. Especially with such lean requirements. Little Ruby is so cute. Changing it into apartments. That seems about right LOL. It's so cool how many historical aspects you've managed to touch on. Thanks for sharing! Take care you three! Donovan and Jodi
I agree with you Donovan, there were some evil men that they think they could get away with their loved ones by admitting them into a mental institution. Even if you were different, you could be institutionalised. Apartments are fantastic. There was also an application for turning it into a hotel resort. Not sure why that fell through. Thank you for watching. hope you are all well. Cheers ~ Joseph
An interesting video and story, I bet the stories would be something else to hear. Enjoyed the show around my friend!
Thanks for the visit Beck. Glad you enjoyed the tour of this Asylum and Grounds. Have a great day buddy.
LOL There sure is enough of us lunatics out here Peter. beautiful building and grounds. I don't think i would want to live here though. Have a great week Joe and Peter.
Definitely good looking apartments now. Also, I like all these birds 🐦 😊
@@pavelviktor75 Thank you Pavel, glad you like the apartments and the grounds of the Asylum.
I would be pretty safe living here. But there would be a few ghosts lurking around. Thank you for watching Linda and Craig. Have a great week. You must be all caught up now 😂
Big thumbs up my friends 👍
Big thanks John. Have a great weekend.
Great job of reviewing the sad past of the Kew Lunatic Asylum. Well done.
Thank you Arnold. I was so surprised to see your comment here. Thank you so much for your comment, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank You for this tour!
Our pleasure Cindy. Have a great day.
🙋🏻♀️Very good video, best channel👍👈😊
Thank you for dropping by and watching our video. Have a wonderful day.
That cat looks like me when I wake up 🤣 Wonderful landscaping. Thanks for the tour
Our pleasure! That putty cat was very friendly. Yes, they have presented the grounds really well and the appartments are well appointed. I have a nephew living in one. I didn't wish to film inside his place for privacy reasons. Glad you enjoyed the tour Leah. have a wonderful week.
Hey dude , if i link back to your channel, can i use this in a video ?
Yes you can if you give me credit. Absolutely. Thank you also for asking. 👍🏽🙏🏽
Hi Nice lunatic asylum like resort! love open grass area!
The original plans were to turn it into a resort, but failing that, it was changed and refurbished as appartments. It would have been great as a resort. Thank you for watching. Have a great weekend.
Such a sad part of Melbourne’s history. So glad they closed the institution. Thank you Joe for highlighting this landmark in the suburb of Kew. Well done.
Thank you Naile, there are some horrific stories that came out of these institutions. Glad you enjoyed the tour. Hope your day is going well.
The early days of the asylum sound quite dreadful. Love the cat at 4:32! I wonder how many of the residents are not aware of the property's history? Thank you for sharing this historic property.
That grumpy looking cat was very friendly 😂. Oh yes, the residence would be very aware of its history. Glad you enjoyed this property Dan and Tracie. Thank you for watching 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
Looks nice and lush and tranquil now, does have kind of a sad past though, good work Jojo, Peter and Ruby :)
Thanks steve. I found out today that there was plans to convert it into a State of the Art Hotel Accomodation. But appartments they are, better than leaving it abandoned. Gk]lad you enjoyed the video. Have a great weekend buddy.
Very interesting JoJo & Pietro! 👏 😘
It was Jenny 😘.
All you had to be was a misfit and you would be locked away.
I bet the stories about this place are incredible !!! Thanks for taking me along for the tour !!! Great job guys 👍🏻
Thanks for watching David. I agree the stories would be horrific and interesting. It is a pity they closed these institutions as now our homeless roam the streets with their mental illnesses and no-one to care foe them. They are left to fend for themselves and beg on our streets. Society has let them down. I'm not sure what the solution is. But mental illness seems to be increasing.
Yes incredible like the staff who raped the patients.....🤔😠😠
Hey Guys Havent stopped by in awhile Nice video friends .
Thank you Newman. Thank you for stopping by. Great to see you back here again. Have a great weekend.
It would be so interesting to visit an asylum in person. We've only seen them in movies. There are enough for us for sure. LOL Poor women. Glad those days are in the past indeed. This place looks so serene, nothing like in the movies. Good to hear a bit about your dad.
Thank you for stopping by Maria and Nabol. It is a much nicer place these days than it ever used to be. I sometimes wonder if there are any paranormal activities these days. Glad you enjoyed. Have a great weekend.
I like your opening credits montage! I also love Mr. Kitty patrolling the grounds. It is a beautiful place, but not sure I would want to live there given the past history. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thank you very much! Grumpy Cat was cute and friendly. I am sure it is a safe place to live. I have never heard anything that would otherwise suggest. Thank you for watching buddy, have a great week.

Great history and stories of Victorian Towns. Impressive and indeed we all are glad those days are past...
Glad you enjoyed it Noah. Yes, I am glad those days are past too. Hope you are well. Thank you for dropping by.
I would love to hear some of the stories this place holds. Great video! Sure have missed watching your videos. I will do some catch up on them ~
Thank you Kathy. New video out today. Its a hiking Video, i'm sure you will enjoy. Thank you for watching this episode. Thank you for stopping by. Have a great day.
Another wonderful video guys i love learning little bits of history through you guys :) lovely photo of your dad to peter, hope you guys are well
Thank you. Appreciated your comments guys. We are all unique and bring something to the channel and I have enjoyed your vlogs too. Keep up the great work. Have a great Australia Day. Cheers ~ Jojo
Going around the bend was actually a saying that began from the Yarra Bend Asylum, which was a different institution entirely - located opposite sides of the Yarra River from the Kew Asylum 😊
Thank you Harriet 🙏🏼🤗
Interesting place. I am sure it has seen a lot. Very sad about people putting away their wives in the asylum. So cruel. Interesting that Peter has a personal connection to the Kew Cottages with his dad working there with the children. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for watching this video. The Asylum is not far from where we live and it was fitting to visit and do a tour of this place. I am glad you enjoyed. There is much more deeper history about these asylums than one could imagine. Have a great week.
Such a big place joe,
and just think of how many people were there that didn't need to be...
Kew cottages only closed down because of the fire...
it would still have operated today if the disaster didn't happen.
Take care guys ATB Jim.
Jim I had no idea how big the place was. It is almost identical to the Beechworth Asylum, but a smaller scale. Yes you you didn’t have to be insane to be admitted into an asylum just different! I would have been locked up! Ugh 🤦 Thank goodness we have come a long way. Thanks for watching buddy. Have a great day Jim.
Wow, Peter you look just like your dad 👍 😀
I know, its frightening! He looks like his father more and more every day. Hope you are well Brian. Have a great weekend.
When I went interstate to Melbourne, I wish I had known about here so I could pay my respects to this sad place.
The history is dark and checkered. But these days a much safer and nicer place to dwell in. Thank you for watching.
Guys I used to work there. I was a cleaner there. Some of the stories you heard about the place are true. I had a cleaning room separate and alone in the yard and no ones going there after 5pm 6pm. Its getting unusually cold time to time for few minutes sometimes and heard someone knocking to the window. I came out and checked. no one was there. then i went back to the cleaning room and heard it again. It’s all before i know that this place is crazy. After two knocks i felt something wrong so i left the room and went to the residence building. Then i heard the story from my manager. I never went there after 5pm. And there are few more places that go crazy. I didn’t work there for more than 2 months.
Creepy Story. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sure that there are many stories that have come out of these Asylums. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching. 🙏🏼👍🏼🤗
Woah that is so brutal and cruel of men. Can imagine being forced into an asylum because it was the only way to get rid of me!
I'm sure Han would sometimes like to go there herself sometimes because I do send her around the bend 😂
also, that cat is the new grumpy cat! They are soo bloody hilarious 🤣
The asylum looks like it has been very well maintained! Have you guys been to the Fremantle Prison? You two would love the history there!
thanks for sharing Jojo and Peter! love and hugs from us 🥰🙌👌
No l must be honest and say I have never been to Western Australia and hope to get there sometime. But if you like prisons, The Old Melbourne Gaol and The Gaol Experience in Melbourne is definitely worth the visit. Thank you for stopping by guys 😘🤗🙏🏽
@@CowboyJojosAdventures I did it when I was a young kid. but you forget a lot about that type of activity back then. I should take Han back there! Thanks again
@@flightofthefox-aussietrave1430 There is a video in my play list , Peter and I went there in 2019.
one of my favourite places Willsmere kew Asylum i've always wanted to go back in to take photos but it is heavily gated community. did you know in a rage doctor reg ellery smashed some furniture because it was bug infested during one of the asylums bug outbreaks.
No I had no idea.
I was able to visit Willsmere at the time due to my nephew who was living there. Unfortunately he has moved, so I can't get access. Thank you for watching Gary.
I bet there are some nice ghost stories to be heard from there. I’ll skip staying 😱
You chicken, 🤣. Yep! there would be some horror stories Daz. have a great day.
Amazing 😍
Thank you! Cheers, have a great weekend.
We don't want lunatics on the loose....there are too many of us....LOL....an awesome looking place to see. We have subscribed to your channel and we would like to see more of your tours. We have started a channel as well and would love for you to take a look at it and see what you think.
Awesome! Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our episode. Look forward to checking your channel our. Cheers ~ Joseph
Nice and scary story. I'm surprised you guys would go near that place. Lol
I'm not afraid Senior. Besides there are so many people living there now. Whatever bad omens there might have been are all gone. I do know that the Beechworth Asylum is haunted. Glad you enjoyed the tour.
Great old buildings, even if for such a sad use. At least it will be used for apt.
Absolutely. I am so glad the buildings have been repurposed. A sad past, but a great future.
kew lunatic asylum victoria 2021...IMGrateFul to see you
Hello from Australia. Thank you for dropping by and watching one of our videos. Lovely to make your acquaintance. Have a great weekend.
Quite an impressive building (structurally). Sad history though - I bet many people were placed inside those walls without justification.
Yes, one too many were admitted without and mental issues. Awful times. Thank you for watching. Have a great day.
Brilliant scary intro 😂
LOL. Gotcha! 😂
👍👍👍Like
Thank you 👍
Unfortunately my great great grandmother was sent here by her husband just after giving birth to her 8th child. She died 3 weeks later. I suspect post natal depression. She was just 36. Cause of death was "Disease of the brain"....whatever that means
How awful, 😢
It must have been a difficult time
For your Great, Great Grandmother.
During that time period, lots of people with mental issues were mistreated that way all over the globe.
Yes Ernie. Disgusting times. Still people are being mistreated. Lets continue to fight for a better world. Equality, Love, Peace. Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful day.
Anyone know the easiest direct way to pull patient files from before 1900? i cant see to work it out?
I wouldn't know where to start. Hopefully some might see this and respond.
@@CowboyJojosAdventures I hope so
I played at Kew cottages on the trampolines, a guy who’s Nick name was cookie used to shoot you with his comb
Thank you for watching and sharing your nostalgia, what was your connection with the Kew Cottages and what was year was it.
@@CowboyJojosAdventures around 1978
Some individuals were pretty scary cos they chase you n man did u run when they did, was in the day when the females n men were segregated by the low fenced off yards There was some pretty horrific sight, my gf father was a minister there I think and had lodgings there surname was Brassington, a friends sister in law worked in the Willsmetd section a lot where in straight jackets
@@1hoppyac1 thank you for the interesting information.
This is scary cuz my home is on the grounds of kew asylum
I am positive it has a good vibe these days. I also have a nephew who lives on the grounds and he loves it there. Thank you for watching 👍🏽🙏🏽
they were all very nasty sadistic places , where patients were beaten , raped, boys and girls, electric shock treatment and doped to the eyeballs , also lobotomies were carried out as experiments to , kids got sent to those places as young as 6 or under for things like ADHD, Epilepsy , etc etc and were imprisoned in them for their whole lives , i presume there is a book on the beechworth 1 and the kew 1 , i have the ararat book [history] of it and its horrible so they would all be run the same way , been thoough the kew 1 many yrs ago as i knew a patient there who went in as a 20 yr old girl beautiful looking young lady for depression etc ,within 2 yrs her skin had changed to a blue color due to high meds , elec shock treatment etc she spent 30 yrs in kew and only got out when they closed the joints , they should have never allowed them to be developed , they should have stayed the way there were so future generations could see and feel the despair , cheers
Thank you for sharing and watching Steve. There are many sad and tragic stories.
