Nice presentation, easy to follow and understand. I can see why it's important to cover the main tasks of pad replacement before getting into the "refurbishment". The best instruction for the newbie, is ALWAYS in small understandable increments. Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it.

Just got an old bandit, needs the brakes done and lots more, thanks to you I've tackled the caliper clean and rubber seal replacement, going to replace the pads and do the same on the rear and maybe the discs too, you make it all look easy and to be fair the way you teach it, it is, thanks Del for giving me the confidence to have a go myself, cheers.

I like the waffle lol, I know so many people that have spent hundreds on new breaks, I found a mate of mine who got fed up of spending hundreds hammering on his calliper after putting the wrong pads in and not pushing back the piston, I stopped him take bought the correct pads for him and then fitted them for him, good video mate congrats on Discovery. Yeah man! All went sweet as. Good shout out about the pumping of the brake lever. You are right, reaching for levers that need a good 3-4 squeezes before they bite would be flippin' scary!!

Thank you. I've recently passed my mod2 and I'm looking to buy my first big bike. The Bandit is a possible choice and I want to do my own basis maintenance. This instructional video is marvellous. If I can add a tip from a complete novice, when taking out your bolts and pins etc, place them in a tin or bowl so you don't lose them. I'm a bugger for putting things down and losing them.

I stumbled upon your Bandit Renthal video when I decided to fit a set of Ultra Low's to my ER6N and then again when it came to oil change time. This video couldn't have come at a better time as a new set of brake pads have just dropped through my door. It'll be my morning project, laptop sat on workbench, mug o' tea... Perfick.

Hi mate, you hit the nail exactly on the head, your bike is 5yrs newer than mine and has different calipers, take your pads out and buy the ones that look identical, on the sale listing check that your bike is specified and if in doubt, e-mail the seller and ask them if they fit your specific bike... this way if he guarantees them to be correct and they are not, it is his liability to replace them with the right ones or refund your money...good luck with it, take care, Del
Most certainly Sal, i get wjhat you mean and there has been a huge kick over that... people prefer the detail it seems, so i have spoken with the guys at Discovery and they felt the same too, aslo had lots of trouble editing them back and not loosing useful content.. so ill be filming some continuity clips for them shortly and they will use them to split the videos into two parts, that way the content will survive and still fit in.. problem solved.. thanks for your unput hun, take care, Del.
yep another great vid m8. keep it up :) the test run is sooo important ! did the brakes on my cage not so long back and was really pleased i took it for a test drive. had so much more braking performance that i was chewing on the steering wheel!

Update: Nevermind :) You've explained it later in the video Just a note, when you push pads back at around 6:00 I'd recommend checking the brake fluid level in the reservoir. When the pistons are pushed back the level rises and if it was filled recently it could be hard to push pistons back as there will be no space in the reservoir. Also opening the reservoir will make it a bit easier :)
Finally a great video. Simple explanation like a tutorial should be. Well done. If you have the time and if you feel like it,can you do a video of the rear brake? It would help me alot. Thx anyway.

Hi Edward, no idea without seeing it mate, you will need to get it plumbed up properly first...it may just be bone dry...get the vac pump and plumb it up, it will probable be fine.
Hi Bisto.. thats a tall ask in one comment box.. its not hard to balance them, but the best way would be to get a manual to get the basic run through, use the mercury gauges for the easiest results..and set aside plenty of time as it takes a while to get the hang of setting them in turn.... sorry i cant just give you an easy fix on that, its a bit of a knack.. but practice makes perfect..

Its a bit wide open that one, it depends on how you use them and the quality of pads you buy, crappy cheap pads used heavily all the time could rub out in 3-4,000 miles but a decent quality pair of pads like EBC treated properly by a sympathetic rider could be 4 times that, as a guide I used EBC pads the last time & they gave me 15,000 miles, but maintaining the calipers (keeping them free'd off and not binding) & riding with sympathy to your consumables is the key Take care buddy,Del
See my 'Clutch Fluid Change' which I just loaded, it's the exact procedure for brakes too..sometimes trapped air can fragment into microscopic bubbles and permeate throughout the fluid,so even if you've just bled them it's worth pumping a couple of reseviors of fresh fluid through he system so that you 'change' the fluid,then when that's done,seal it all up and bungy the lever in against the grip overnight,this pressurises the fluid,opens the valve & allows any air to drift to the top Del
Hi mate, the squeeling is caused by VHF vibration, and the task it to stop it..some bikes actually have a thin steel shim plate that goes between pad and piston, see if you are meant to have some and they are missing?.if they are binding even a little bit then get them cleaned properly, watch my cleaning calipers video, and if it still does it then maybe strip and rebuild the caliper with new seals. finally, check what kind of pads its meant to have, maybe softer pads would help, good luck, Del.
Do you mean the filter on a Bandit.?.. i have a K&N filter in my airbox, so it doesnt need replacing, ill give it a wash i guess, but not due for a few thousand yet.. once i get to it though mate, ill film it for sure.. thanks for your faith and kind support.. Del.

By rotors, do you mean discs? (as bike brakes are composite floating items with both a rotor and carrier), what do you mean by rotors and I'm not sure what you mean by turn them, sorry to be ignorant, mate, thanks for watching Del
The mirror is made by Zefal, and it's actually a bicycle mirror, super light weight plastic, cost about £15, great if you drop the bike as you don't lunch a £60 fancy pants Oberon item... good luck with it, Del

Yes indeed, mate, when I trained as a bus fitter it was actually a discipinary offence not to test drive the vehicle after you'd worked on it, it was that important, also there's nothing worse than finding out the front wheel is binding or the lever is not set correctly, etc., as you set off for work in the rain the next morning, if you test ride it you have a chance to make any adjustments before you need to rely on it,,, thanks for watching, buddy, take care Del
Right, get you now, and this is never done on motorcycle discs, they are too thin in the first place, only 5mm thick in some places, it is possible to have the 'skimmed' on a lathe, but it is inevitable that they will need replacing, the thinner they get the more likely they are to warp under heat, such is the expense of running a bike, a pair of front discs of any qaulity are over £300 and running the pads on the metal can lunch them in a day. honestly for all the newbie mechanics who don't put things together on a daily basis, and don't have a good feel on how tight bolts should be, Invest in a torque wrench, so that when you get to critical parts like these two bolts; allowing you to slow down your bike, you can just follow the torque spec that is likely to be in your manual:) that way, you know you are safe, also, if you have a chance, put a drop of loctite 243 on the bolts instead of copperslip, that way it's an added security as it locks them in even better, and won't vibrate out if they are too loose. and it too will prevent them from seizing quite nicely.

Yep i replaced the diddy pads on my mates aprilia habana scooter, and yes it was down to the metal so the disk had to be dumped as well. I did put tiny spots of grease where the shoes touched the caliper, very tiny spots dont panic :-), the slide in pin i used wire wool to clean. They did slightly catch the disk but i suspect it will become better when worn in, otherwise its big hammer time ha ha :-) Good video mate, get your parts ready before filming, ow er that sounds naughty :-)
Ayup Jeff. use antiseize (or copperclip) on the bolts....think about it...you DONT want them to seize in there..and loctite will do just that, lock them in place... the fasteners on brakes tend to weld themselves in due to continued heat cylcling and dirt, crud and rust....so you need a compound that will prevent that..not one that will promote it..! and Penny says.."so what you're saying is, you still havent done it yet"..lol.. some day we'll get that beer cracked and tell some stories buddy.
Hi Rob.. good to hear from you buddy, and thanks for your kind support... with your brake pins, check out my video on rebuilding the back caliper, (ill send you a link in PM in a minute) there is a trick of drilling two little holes in the caliper body so they can be drifted out....otherwise you can just split the caliper body halves in two and they will be easy to drop out then....and its never a bad idea to get some new ones, they dont cost much and then you can keep on top of them in future
So you're like me then,,,forget something midly relevant and it will bug you till you loose sleep, sadly, like me, you are probably suffering early onset OCD ...and that's a good thing when it comes to doing your brakes up properly, but it gets tedious when you find yourself arranging spanners in size order! did the brakes on my cage not so long back and was really pleased i took it for a test drive. had so much more braking performance that i was chewing on the steering wheel!

Just a note, when you push pads back at around 6:00 I'd recommend checking the brake fluid level in the reservoir. When the pistons are pushed back the level rises and if it was filled recently it could be hard to push pistons back as there will be no space in the reservoir. Also opening the reservoir will make it a bit easier :)
Finally a great video. Simple explanation like a tutorial should be. Well done. If you have the time and if you feel like it,can you do a video of the rear brake? It would help me alot. Thx anyway.

Hi Edward, no idea without seeing it mate, you will need to get it plumbed up properly first...it may just be bone dry...get the vac pump and plumb it up, it will probable be fine.

Hi Bisto.. thats a tall ask in one comment box.. its not hard to balance them, but the best way would be to get a manual to get the basic run through, use the mercury gauges for the easiest results..and set aside plenty of time as it takes a while to get the hang of setting them in turn.... sorry i cant just give you an easy fix on that, its a bit of a knack.. but practice makes perfect..

Its a bit wide open that one, it depends on how you use them and the quality of pads you buy, crappy cheap pads used heavily all the time could rub out in 3-4,000 miles but a decent quality pair of pads like EBC treated properly by a sympathetic rider could be 4 times that, as a guide I used EBC pads the last time & they gave me 15,000 miles, but maintaining the calipers (keeping them free'd off and not binding) & riding with sympathy to your consumables is the key Take care buddy,Del
See my 'Clutch Fluid Change' which I just loaded, it's the exact procedure for brakes too..sometimes trapped air can fragment into microscopic bubbles and permeate throughout the fluid,so even if you've just bled them it's worth pumping a couple of reseviors of fresh fluid through he system so that you 'change' the fluid,then when that's done,seal it all up and bungy the lever in against the grip overnight,this pressurises the fluid,opens the valve & allows any air to drift to the top Del
Hi mate, the squeeling is caused by VHF vibration, and the task it to stop it..some bikes actually have a thin steel shim plate that goes between pad and piston, see if you are meant to have some and they are missing?.if they are binding even a little bit then get them cleaned properly, watch my cleaning calipers video, and if it still does it then maybe strip and rebuild the caliper with new seals. finally, check what kind of pads its meant to have, maybe softer pads would help, good luck, Del.
Do you mean the filter on a Bandit.?.. i have a K&N filter in my airbox, so it doesnt need replacing, ill give it a wash i guess, but not due for a few thousand yet.. once i get to it though mate, ill film it for sure.. thanks for your faith and kind support.. Del.

By rotors, do you mean discs? (as bike brakes are composite floating items with both a rotor and carrier), what do you mean by rotors and I'm not sure what you mean by turn them, sorry to be ignorant, mate, thanks for watching Del
The mirror is made by Zefal, and it's actually a bicycle mirror, super light weight plastic, cost about £15, great if you drop the bike as you don't lunch a £60 fancy pants Oberon item... good luck with it, Del

Yes indeed, mate, when I trained as a bus fitter it was actually a discipinary offence not to test drive the vehicle after you'd worked on it, it was that important, also there's nothing worse than finding out the front wheel is binding or the lever is not set correctly, etc., as you set off for work in the rain the next morning, if you test ride it you have a chance to make any adjustments before you need to rely on it,,, thanks for watching, buddy, take care Del

Right, get you now, and this is never done on motorcycle discs, they are too thin in the first place, only 5mm thick in some places, it is possible to have the 'skimmed' on a lathe, but it is inevitable that they will need replacing, the thinner they get the more likely they are to warp under heat, such is the expense of running a bike, a pair of front discs of any qaulity are over £300 and running the pads on the metal can lunch them in a day. honestly for all the newbie mechanics who don't put things together on a daily basis, and don't have a good feel on how tight bolts should be, Invest in a torque wrench, so that when you get to critical parts like these two bolts; allowing you to slow down your bike, you can just follow the torque spec that is likely to be in your manual:) that way, you know you are safe, also, if you have a chance, put a drop of loctite 243 on the bolts instead of copperslip, that way it's an added security as it locks them in even better, and won't vibrate out if they are too loose.
and it too will prevent them from seizing quite nicely.

Yep i replaced the diddy pads on my mates aprilia habana scooter, and yes it was down to the metal so the disk had to be dumped as well.
I did put tiny spots of grease where the shoes touched the caliper, very tiny spots dont panic :-), the slide in pin i used wire wool to clean.
They did slightly catch the disk but i suspect it will become better when worn in, otherwise its big hammer time ha ha :-)

Ayup Jeff. use antiseize (or copperclip) on the bolts....think about it...you DONT want them to seize in there..and loctite will do just that, lock them in place... the fasteners on brakes tend to weld themselves in due to continued heat cylcling and dirt, crud and rust....so you need a compound that will prevent that..not one that will promote it..! and Penny says.."so what you're saying is, you still havent done it yet"..lol.. some day we'll get that beer cracked and tell some stories buddy.

Hi Rob.. good to hear from you buddy, and thanks for your kind support... with your brake pins, check out my video on rebuilding the back caliper, (ill send you a link in PM in a minute) there is a trick of drilling two little holes in the caliper body so they can be drifted out....otherwise you can just split the caliper body halves in two and they will be easy to drop out then....and its never a bad idea to get some new ones, they dont cost much and then you can keep on top of them in future
