- Many of you have been asking for a review of the new ASUS ProArt PA32UC monitor, and here it is!
Now I’m a big fan of Eizo monitors, I use the Eizo ColorEdge CG318-4K monitor for all my day-to-day retouching post-production work, so I thought about doing a direct comparison between these two 4K monitors.
Now some of you might say “Well that doesn’t seem quite fair, especially considering the Asus costs about half of what the Eizo does”, but Asus had such confidence in their product that I felt it would be interesting to compare it to a top of the range monitor to really put it to the test.
When Asus approached me to do the review, I told them that my review would be completely honest and that, depending on the monitor, it could be good or bad.
They came back confident, telling me they felt the monitor would stand up well against some tough competition.
That said, let's get down to the stuff you really want to know...
What does the Asus cost? First of all the key thing here is that this particular ColorEdge CG318-4K monitor comes in at a retail price of about £3,500 (roughly 4400USD) this Asus Pro R comes in at only £1,800 (roughly 2,100USD) (this was at the time of filming).
So it is literally half the price of the CG3184K!
The EIZO ColorEdge 318-4K is still available (I think), but it's been upgraded or superseded now by the CG319, which is even more expensive (£4000 / $5000) so there is a big difference in price between these two monitors.
But is there a big difference in quality?
Amazingly no, there isn't a big quality difference - the Asus monitor is
actually superb and I was very, very impressed. But is it as good as the EIZO ColorEdge 318 monitor? It was incredibly close! But you’ll have to watch the video to find out which monitor came out top!

The color difference between the two monitors is obvious. I notice the magenta difference with the Asus as soon as the video started.
Thats true, but for me personally I dont like this green/yellow tone of the Eizo
there's no way to know if the video file has wrong white balance or if its the monitor. they both look different again on the second angle camera.
@@1TheQuickstep You might only perceive the left monitor as green, because your eyes are adjusting to the pink tint on the right one. I personally feel the left monitor is more grey'ish neutral in it's color, which would be the correct callibration.
Color reproduction isn't about subjective perception. It's pure math here - the better calibrated display, the closer final look You can achieve. And if You color/grade Your work more pink that's entirely up to You. Just imagine how mad would You be if You thought You got the color right the way You like and then You saw Your work somewhere else and it would be "green/yellow toned".
TheSdzisuaf Should also consider the Eizo has the hood over it which would likely change how we perceive the image anyhow.
got the asus monitor a few weeks back, really happy with it. you forgot to mention that it also supports adaptive sync which might be good to know for some people.. great review!

I managed to pick up a Eizo CG318 monitor recently, second user. I've had Dell, Benq Sw range, and Eizo is far superior. The built in self calibrator is very handy. Great review.

Being a salesman for Eizo few years back, I have to say that you are missing a key point.
Quality control.
There are cases where buyers had to send back 2-3 or even more Asus monitors, in order to get a decent one. I cannot tell if you were lucky, or they handpicked yours, which is very likely, but this is the main culprit when buying non-Eizo as a professional.
The other one is, the warranty and how it is treated if needed.
Hi George, you may well be right. I just tested the one they sent me. I have 3 Eizo monitors and have used them all my career, but the first CG318 I got had a faint line down the middle of the screen, I sent them a video to show them and without question they sent me another one straight away and that one is perfect it's the one I use all the time for my retouching. I'm not swapping from Eizo to Asus I just gave it a review based on what I saw and a price for price comparison but I will still be using my Eizo for the critical work that I do.
It is called "Golden Sample" for a reason. Every serious product maker hand picks and pre-tests products they send for media for review.

@@TheSdzisuaf Hi Sdzisuaf, I'm one of the product specialists at EIZO. The 319X is essentially the exact same monitor spec for spec and performance. The only difference is the included 24-bit 3D LUT vs the 16-bit 3D LUT on the 318 (and 14-bit 1D LUT on ASUS). 16-bit is plenty for photo and print. The 24-bit 3D LUT is geared towards video and hdr creatives.
would be also interesting to know how well Asus will hold up after 3-5 years. I know Eizo can go for a long time with no real issues.
Excellent review. You can definitely see the magenta tint on the Asus. Love the neutral look of the EIZO and the built in calibrator.
Great review but I think to be fair you had to take off the cover so both monitors are affected by the ambient light and that affects the calibration too

The EIZO superiority is obvious from where I sit, but you can probably tweak the ASUS for a closer match. But why should you have to? EIZO for the win. Thanks for a very informative and honest review. I also like the user friendliness of the EIZO better.
Just from the video I can clearly see how the Eizo is better in neutrality and I like it better how it reproduces the images you have shown.
"Accuracy" is a very controversial/loose term, in monitor calibration landscape. I would have like to see you "calibrate" the ASUS to the same Eizo calibrated white point chromaticities. In "theory", you would not have gotten a "slightly pinkish or reddish" overall tint that way, as you noted? Now, the "BEST" approach, in my view, would have been to use your eyes to set both monitors to the same white point "tint" and Luminance: display RGB = 255,255,255 on the Eizo, and to the same on the ASUS. Now, turn to the ASUS On-Screen Control, and adjust the RGB "gains" (sliders) until the white on the ASUS visually matches the white on the Eizo. THEN, tell the ASUS software to calibrate to the "Native" white point. That way, the only difference you would see would come out of the "true" difference off the two monitors. Keep in mind that, even then, there are bound to be differences because of each display's difference in primaries. RGB primaries spectra being different on both monitors, I'm not 100% sure anyone would be able to come to a point where we would get an "absolute" match between the two displays but they ought to be pretty close, that way, in my opinion, the closest they can ever be.
It is however showing that either the monitor, calibrator or calibration software is ending up with a pinkish tone. You want to be able to trust the calibration to end up with neutral tones, particularly since it was bundled together and presumably tested to do so.
More worrying to me was the vignette around the edge suggesting uneven backlighting. I think as somebody else has suggested some setting wasn't chosen correctly and perhaps that has put it all out of wack.
The problem is that I think he said that you CANNOT override the calibration parameters....Which makes NO SENSE! Why have a LUT calibration capable screen and take the most important tool out of it??!! BONKERS!

EIZO has been the king of monitors for a very looooooong time....how did you miss it?
What would have been a great test would have been to do a correlation between your Enzo calibrator and the eye one display so you first can see which one as variation and in which channel. After calibrate your Ezio with the eye one display a d THEN do a qualification of the calibration and then look at the delta of each Color. That way you’ll know exactly where the struggle is. By the way I own an Ezio to and look at the delta of each Color. It’s far from a flander.. that’s why Ezio is a prosumer monitor and not a real grading monitor.

The ASUS monitor is so much in the Red spectrum that even here on the UA-cam video, it is perfectly clear that the color is different.
For so many years EIZO is simply The Standart when we speak for Real Color!

I am checking the ASUS ProArt PA32UCX-K for HDR video review as our company own a EIZO CG318-4k. A massive difference between 'HDR' specs of both monitors is the Eizo reaching 300 nits were the Asus goes over 1000 nits. I was wondering if you have used HDR at all on both monitor ?
Also the video is showing a noticable shift between both monitors; the magenta tint but also a black lift on the Asus. Is the recording accentuating what you were seeing, or is it a good representation of what you had in real life? Also did you calibrate both monitors with the same probe?

From the first moment I noticed the extra percent of magenta in Asus monitor. The grey background is not neutral at all.
Hi Marios, please keep in mind that this is a video reproduction from a video camera and then on youtube it looks quite different to the human eye and much more subtle I would say.

Video can produce all sorts of colour casts in odd directions based on a number of factors including the ambient lighting conditions, mixed artificial lighting, reflectance, gamma and on and on. In my opinion the video made the the Asus look pinker than it actually was and the Eizo greener than it was, therefore making the disparity look even greater. Unfortunately the fake kung fu monk also thinks man never walked on the moon.
@@VisualEducationStudio I can remember buying my first Eizo (that I still have to this day), a CG-21, 19" 1600x1200. No matter how hard I tried to "calibrate" it, I would always get a slight "pinkish" deviation in the highlights, which made my work impossible. And that was a $2500 monitor at the time.
The ASUS appears to not have as deep black levels as the Eizo in this photo. Is it just a matter of adjustment, or do you find that to be true? As an aside, I like your images! Beats a rose garden. The ASUS can now be purchased for $1,398.65. Any other monitors that can compete at this price point; e.g., Ben-Q; Dell? Thanks.
I was thinking that too during almost the entire video. I wondered if the Eizo hood had something to do with it. Near the end of the video, when Karl is showing the greyscale strips on both monitors, his hand happens to cast a shadow just for a second on the Asus and suddenly the blacks darken to a deep, rich black. I backed the video up to make sure I saw it, and it's clear the effect of his hand. Therefore, I'm guessing the difference that we're seeing IS from the hood on the Eizo. Would have been great, though, to some kind of makeshift hood around the Asus for a head-to-head comparison.

I don't know if it's the hood, but even in the phone the Eizo is more lifelike. Better tonality and contrast. The Asus looked reddish right off the bat.
Hi, what about printing? one of the good parts of owning an Eizo is the work the did with. Canon and Epson to streamline the process from edition to printing. In Any case this monitor looks fantastic. I am amazing that it passed your critical eye.
The very first thing I noticed was that the Asus was running a bit magenta compared to the Eizo, and it was bothering me the whole video. Spending $2000 should at least give you perfect colour accuracy. It would be tremendous if you could review the Benq 32" pro photography model (BenQ SW321C) as well. Thank you.

Finally! What about cheaper EIZO (Flexscan) vs cheaper ASUS (e.g. those for a thousand euros?)?
the only reason that you see more shadow detail on asus is the lower contrast ratio of 1000:1, its black levels are higher than the eizo. what I mean to say is that seeing less detail in the shadows is the right thing, and eizo is better due to deeper black levels. it is a con for asus because when you print, the eizo will be a close match.
You'd be surprised how a "good"' calibration can do to shadow detail, regardless of monitor make or model. If you have access to a decent colorimeteter, head down to www.displaycal.net. You owe yourself a good calibration if you care about shadow detail. My two cents.

BenQ are bad at quality control and support , that's a fact too!
Benq is dimmer at 350nits vs 1000nits. If you're into video editing at all, the Asus is much better with proper hdr.
Thanks for the review Karl. I have the ASUS 4K ProArt 32 inches monitor. I'm struggling doing the calibration on it with the i1 Display Monitor calibration devise from XRite. Could we have a video on how you did it? I cannot find anything on the internet and I'm very confuse with the proper technics to calibrate it. Thanks and keep the video going. Hi it was only mildly more magenta and this may be something that Asus look at in their calibration software or the paramaters of the panel.

If the calibration is different, something is wrong. Macbooks don't output 10-Bit to test a wide gamut monitor.
It seems nobody that reviews monitors uses nVidia's Quadro or AMD's Radeon Pro or Fire Pro.

@@Krmelj , @Alejandro Gamba Vilchez . It's not about the opsystem. For example with a Mac Pro (2013 Late), aka the "trash can", it is available the 10 bit output. (D300, D700...vga) So it's about the hardware. But yes, for professionals, it's a shame, that only the most expensive Apple hardware can do that, no other option. And not in a laptop.
Maybe MAcBook Pro the older ones don't. I have an iMac 27" 5K, and it is outputting 10 bits per channel to both the iMac screen, and a BenQ SW320 32" 4K from an ATI 580 with 8gb VRAM. I think the screens themselves can be lower bit depth but most recent video cards with Mac will output 30 bits. In any case the iMac does, both the pro and non pro models with the best cards.
Nvidia allows 10 bit colors via their GTX/RTX cards these days. No need for workstation cards.
@@paristo NVIDIA does not allow for 10 BPC on GeForce cards for anything except DirectX APIs in exclusive fullscreen mode. It is completely disabled for the OpenGL API pipeline, and 10 BPC simply will not work at all in windowed mode.
Great review. I have the lower end 2k version of this Monitor. Its pretty good an I notice the same uniform around the edges an the menu layout is head scratching. I can't understand why companies don't just offer a simple remote with the monitor. But over all I'm quite happy with this Monitor an do look forward to up grading to one of Asus higher end 4k professional monitor . Thanks for the review Karl

I believe when you buy something like this ASUS you expect no problem with the reproduction of the colour.... The difference in terms of colours between this 2 monitors, for me at least, is massive & obvious...
Good review. Seems like a good monitor - if no Eizo. The Eizo panel is clearly of a higher level. In the video world we find the same comparing these things to a good monitor like an FSI.
If the Asus is calibrated to a D65 white point, it shouldn't be magenta at all. Also, what is the lighting like in the room? Seems like office lighting to me, which isn't ideal.
Either way, these are minor issues, this is clearly a good monitor
You should calibrate both monitors with the same device. Use the i1 to calibrate the Eizo and you will get another calibration than from the internal calibrator.
That doesn't seem reasonable. This was a review for people considering purchasing either monitor, no one who purchases the Eizo is going to consider using anything other than the built in calibrator as that is one of the reasons people like the Eizo.

Hi Hartmut. I've used Eizo for many years and have spoked to the guys in the UK many times and that has never been suggested to me by them. I have also have an older Eizo which doesn't have self calibration and uses an Xrite external calibrator. When calibrating that screen and comparing it to my CG318 with the built in calibrator the results look the same.

Great review Karl. There may be an ASIS in my future, but right now running (3) NEC 27" Spectaviews. Waiting to see if Apple releases the promised Modular Mac Pro first.

Thanks for review - is there a chance that the probe You got along the display was uncalibrated? Did You try calibrating display with another piece of equipment? Also the contrast between monitors looks really big. Did You try very dark pictures fullscreen with no ambient light?

My reply To your review @Karl Taylor: I get your argument, but it is always the same in every scenario! You pay the extra premium for the smallest of differences in the top end of life. In reality, i can grab myself a £1000 monitor and use the same argument that it is "damn close" to the £1800 monitor. As you get lower in price you start to see more significant changes. i.e the £300 monitor is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the £150 monitor. But in high end, the difference between a £5k monitor might be miniscule to a £2k, but you pay the extra 3k for the tiny difference; especially if you are in the professional world and you need as ACCURATE as possible, the smallest difference could make the biggest changes.
From my observation: I see a pretty big difference, and the price heavily reflects on it. At the end of the day if you want the absolute best, settle for the absolute best - don't bother wasting money on third rate products. If money is an issue for you, then i don't know why you are looking at buying such an expensive monitor (both of these).
I am sure if you are a graphic designer who has just started, you'd benefit more on buying a sub £800-1k monitor, i am sure you will find those suffice. Once you have got back from that initial investment, you should then settle for the best. Don't cut corners and buy the £1800 monitor.

What if decision is between ASUS and typical $700-$-800 4K monitor or similarly priced monitors; e.g., BenQ PD3220U? Which of these two would you recommend? All relative.
Would be interesting to see a review of the new PA32UX that has since been released that is said to be better even better. :-)
EIZO siempre será la mejor opción, pues considero que esta completamente pensado en perfeccionar el color y su nitidez, mientras que otras marcas buscan que el uso que se les de a los monitores sea excelente para distintas aplicaciones pero no enfocada a color-foto-diseño.
It is clear that there is unnatural red tint to the Asus, the Eizo looks as natural as it can get compared to the chrome and silver colors of your studio, like all grays in the video are cyan-ish yet the Asus screen looks magenta-ish, the hair of that lady looks pale on the Asus where is looks natural in the Eizo, once a screen got a factory tint in it you cannot calibrate it period. i would love to see the LG 34inch 5K monitor comparison

I looked up the ASUS and it doesn't come with the calibrator, it seems like an additional accessory which really is crucial.
If the calibrator is included, for $2000 on BH, this ASUS is an absolute bargain.
Not sure how well the quality control of ASUS is, I'm much more confident in the EIZO for quality control and warranty claims.
It comes with the monitor in the box and it is listed in the instructions as items included.
@@VisualEducationStudio I think you are right, I found two unboxing videos and both included the calibrator! It comes in some generic box included with the monitor.

@@diatomsaus Now consider me using PA24AC which is ~400$ for my desktop daily use, and it looks pretty good for the money (no true 10 bit color tho, but still 14 bit LUT). Some people praise VA for blacker blacks, but to me, (quality) IPS panel color + actual viewing angles worth a damn, there is no contest. Plus this monitor does not smear darks on game dark scene transitions. The PA is a pretty good line of Asus I'd say.

Hi, the displayport terminal is still DP v 1.2. That is a version that dates back to January 2010 ! I am not joking. That is insane ! Why is that and doesn’t that bother you at all, at that price point ?
Why would that be a problem?
Well, if your camera is not lying, then the 1500:1 vs 1000:1 is clearly visible on the blacks of the lady's hair. The Eizo looks much darker in comparison.
That is what I noticed. Appears Eizo has deeper blacks.
I'm not sure if it's the angle of view to the camera, but to me the ASUS seems warmer in the skin tones and whites, and the greys/blacks don't look anywhere near as deep as on the Eizo.

My clients don't give a sh1t how much effort I put into getting their pics right.
We can clearly establish that young UA-camrs have different eyes to expert photographers.

I heard from some other reviewers that the asus looks oversharpened. Did it look like that to you?

Does it support 23.97, 24, 25, 30 Hz modes?
I also would suggest to use DisplayCAL software for the calibration. You should also set the same brightness and the same black and white luminosity levels for both displays to make a fair comparison. But for the contrast comparison you should disable this feature for the calibration.

@@VisualEducationStudio Thanks. It nice that they have refresh rates in the specs, but based on it Asus unfortunately doesn't support cinema refresh rates...
Excellent suggestion. May or may not make a difference in "white point". I suggest first "measure Eizo white point" with the instrument and THEN use that measurement to calibrate the ASUS to that. Otherwise, it's not exactly comparing apple with apple, in my HUMBLE opinion.
Unfortunately EIZO doesn’t offer any monitors anymore with remote controls. It’s so much more convenient to switch inputs and modes with a remote than reaching to the monitor.

In regard to the extra pink or red, you had mentioned that there is a way to adjust that out. Were you able to make it perfect or were the results in the video as good as it gets? It appeared that you were saying there is a way to adjust it out but you did the comparisons between the two monitors without dialing in the Asus. Thank you for the review. I was wondering why the Asus monitor photoshop image and side panel is 1.5x larger than Eizo? Are you sure both MacBook was using same setting? I don't think it is possible even Asus is 1 inch larger than Eizo.

4K but I think the 31 inch is bit extreme and potentially the smaller 4K screen could be better.
Hi I was hoping you could let me know what calibration software you are using to test multiple patches of the screen. Everything I’ve used just tests one patch.
Can't go wrong with both, I have used both Eizo and Asus and both brands are the best monitor brands in my eyes. I would give Eizo the edge over Asus their qualitycontrol is much better than the one from asus and the 10 years warranty also. But from the pricepoint view of things Asus is the clear winner, I think if someone got an unlimited budget Eizo is the better choice and if money plays a role Asus is the winner.

i1 Display is a colorimeter and does not have a calibration with a reference color, so you cannot correctly calibrate a monitor, it would be necessary to calibrate the asus with an i1 Basic Pro 2 which is a spectrophotometer with a calibration plate, the i1 Display has inside gels that deteriorate with use.
How Asus can be superb if you can clearly see Eizo way better in colour
Hi Karl.I just bought an EIZO and on other displays my images translate a bit more saturated (compare to what i see on my Eizo display ). May i ask what settings did you find best for eizo (how to calibrate) -adobe rbg or native gamut /brightness and contrast ?? are you using the displayport 1.2?

Hi John. I don't do anything my eizo's calibrate themselves. I just plug them in to the computer.

I think imo Eizo is always hard to beat for the monitor criteria work for photoshop. Asus looks ok but very mediocre contrast compare to Eizo is much better off with.
Where did you purchase the monitor from? I just bought it and it doesn't come with the X-rite 1 Pro. They all claim it does not come with it, and I have seen on many many videos online that it comes with it... So I'm curious...
As I said in the video I didn't purchase it they sent it to me and it came with the calibrator.
EIZO is correctly pronounced as AY-ZO and not I-ZO or EE-ZO. It's pronounced just like you would pronounce the "ei" in the Japanese word sensei (sen-say). For reference see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eizo

@@VisualEducationStudio thanks ..i notice that eizo has this flicker free mode when using the hdmi cable. Which helps with eyes a lot...but i quess usb c and displayport are both maybe a better option for 10bit
I returned my PA32UC when Asus Support agreed that it was defective. Also, Asus’s calibration software requires either Windows or macOS Safari. It will not work on the current Mojave macOS. The menu system is indeed fiddly. I’m looking at alternatives. Note that in the US, i1Display Pro is not included.

Are you sure that you can compare a i1 display with the build in calibrator from the 318-4K? I got those and additionally the i1pro2. And i measured that the build in from the eizo is very near to the i1pro2 for round about 1200 Euro.
Get the i1pro2 and a magnetical hood and you are 1500 Euro nearer to the eizo...
You can keep it, Holy shit! It’s a $4,400 AUD monitor in Australia. Please ASUS I can review one too, from an Australian photographic, general productivity, movie and gaming perspective 😋
and btw. Why not showing a isocoated_v2 proof with the pictures and the softproofing options of the two monitors (not the photoshop soft proof options but the ones from with the profiling software like the one in color navigator)? I think your comparison is not legit without comparing the proofing capabilities.

The earlier reviews of this monitor all showed the built-in presets such as sRGB to have a way off white point calibration of around 7800K out of the box. Having just picked up this monitor I have found the same. I had hoped it was an early production issue. Considering there is a chart in the box showing a perfect 6500K I am very confused how they measured. Karl , did you validate the presets at all? Basically they are useless!
If indeed you got 7800K for sRGB, this can only mean that these monitors are not "factory-calibrated" as their tech specs claim.
Thanks for these videos. From your presentation, I definitely see the difference in color, and image density. I have never used an Asus IRL, so I am not much of an expert. But after watching your review, I am better off using a large iMac screen(glare and all) than that Asus. To me, the biggest advantage of using an iMac is that most industry professionals also use it. So they are looking at the same image you are looking at. If you know what I mean.
Hi there was a slight colour difference but there was no image density difference, that was just glare off of the wall from the video light. I've been using the ASUS in my studio in addition to our two Eizo monitors and it is very good for the price when compared to the price of the Eizo. I'm afriad I can't agree on the Imac screens, I'm not sure which industry professionals you are referring to as everyone that I know in professional photography and graphics guys are working on Eizos or NEC?

I am talking about hiring execs, like agents, art directors, etc. Glad to know there is not much difference in the density. Swear I thought I saw NEC image to be a tad softer. Because I tend to over sharpen things when I am retouching. That is why I prefer an Eizo. I have to look at an NEC personally
Thanks for clarifying what you meant. Eizo is still my first choice and it's the one I have in my office for my main retouching but the Asus has made a good extra monitor around the studio. I'd still go for an Eizo if purchasing new but for those with a tighter budget then I certainly think they are worth looking at.
according to spec, PA32UC has 1000 nits peak bright, does CG318-4K reach that? how does that perform?
We have to assume the Asus has been properly calibrated. But everything is pinky to a point it's getting ridiculous especially when zooming in. Something must be wrong.
I don't know, the color difference is more than obvious. The ASUS is redisher and also seems a bit lighter. I don't really like that. Actually I don't understand why there are calibration tools if it's not realistic that any high priced screen is able to reproduce the exact same color within 1% difference. Why is that so difficult?

I love my Eizo, it's my day to day workhorse. I have two of them in my studio. I said the Asus is slightly pinker than the Eizo even after calibration. I said it's at least half the price. I said the Eizo was better. Did you watch the video or did you come in with your own pre-determined thoughts?
