UK vs NZ. Which Has A Cheaper Cost of Living in 2023?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- In this video I compare a range of products between the United Kingdom and New Zealand, looking at whether it really is cheaper to move to the UK. I compare the cost of housing, electronics, furniture, groceries, fast food, utilities, appliances...essentially all the major categories for spending.

Hope you guys like the video! I know there’s thousands of items that could be compared, but I hope this gives a rough gauge. Let me know if there’s another country you’d like to see compared!
Fast food i find in NZ is way cheaper than UK, especially auckland/london. Compare Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Sushi (but isnt as popular in UK than NZ/AUS). and youll see a markup of 3x the price sometiems more, for identical items.
I always found that in Singapore too, for some reason Pizza is absurdly cheap in NZ. You can pop into a Dominos and get dinner for two for $14 here (1 Large Pizza, 2 Sides), whereas in Singapore you'd pay double for a single pizza.
Good vid. Regarding the housing comparison..this is a tricky one to compare. I find you can get more size for less in NZ (like you said). Although majority of houses in UK are built to withstand freezing temperatures. You won't find many timber constructed dwellings like you would in say ponsonby-auckland. So I would say size isn't the only thing to consider rather construction cost. Another thing to note, most old houses in the UK are very well build. The UK new builds are notorious for bad quality and rushed craftsmanship. I imagine the quality of builds is better in NZ
Such a well made video! I’d also be curious to see salary level comparisons across different levels (grad, mid senior, C-suite etc!) not just for UK but all countries that kiwis often move to. Keep the great content coming, Brent! 👏
Thanks Anisha! I have actually looked into something similar, comparing the wages in other countries. The problem of course was that it's incredibly difficult to find reliable information around this. Even in videos such as this one, taking 'averages' such as house prices can be incredibly challenging as there are so many factors (house type, age, size, materials, transport nodes etc). But thanks for the suggestion and look forward to having you continue to watch my content :)
You would have more options when living in the UK. The London tube feels more expensive but you could buy a Railcard (such as Young Person Card) and link it with the Oyster card, and you would get 1/3 off of all rail services in the UK. London transportation is quite developed and you don't need to buy a car, so potentially could save quite a lot of money. By the way, the UK map in the video included Ireland... I think Ireland is an independent country ☺
Hey! Sorry for the late reply, UA-cam had hidden your comment and I only just saw it! Definitely agree on your points above, the tube is hugely convenient and the density of housing means there are a greater number of services within a close proximity to the home, reducing the need for a car. Auckland on the other hand...! Whoops I guess I hastily put the slides together haha good spotting!
Hey great video man I am loving your content
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it!
Purchasing power parity could be more relevant than bank exchange rates.
So informative, can you please make an updated one. Lots have changed in NZ. Top of head, butter is not this price now, transport subsidy has been removed
Thanks! I'll add it to my list!
Do a NZ vs Canada one with Real Canadian Superstore which is a grocery store here
It would be helpful if you could tell us what exchange rate you're using. Exchange rates can be quite volatile and can have a major impact on your price comparisons.
Very good point! Will include in my videos from now on. From my recollection the rate was 0.515 pence to the New Zealand Dollar, or thereabouts. The rate today is 0.527 pence, meaning the Pound is weaker (as we get more pounds for every NZD$1) and the converted UK prices in the video would be lower if the analysis was done today
Great video
If Aldi were in New Zealand then our prices for groceries would be less
I agree! NZ of course has two supermarket owners, Woolworths/Progressives and Foodstuffs. More competition always leads to better outcomes for consumers as the incumbents need to step up their game to compete. Unfortunately, as recently as a couple months ago there were rumours Aldi were looking to enter, but later backed out. Costco coming early next month will be a start, but given their large-format and membership model they possibly won't have the desired effect as say an Aldi would have. Thanks for watching!
@@BrentColeman absolutely!!
@@BrentColeman agree
Keep doing what you're doing 👌
Thanks Andre!
Considering economies of scale, the UK is looking quite expensive. I would have thought being close to Europe, their prices would have been substantionally cheaper. Not so. Someone’s pocketing the profits…Well done. Still can’t understand how nz cheese is soo expensive.
Why take London as your basis? It's hardly typical of UK prices. It's a city with 9.5 million people crammed in and its prices, especially for housing, are off the scale compared to other places.. Maybe you should compare Auckland with somewhere of a similar size here. That would be Glasgow, I think.
Hi Paul, I used London as the points you raise would be similar to those raised by kiwis about Auckland (e.g. large city, more pricy). Additionally, most kiwis live in, or travel to London when in the UK, so this would be the best reference for them. There's many approaches one could take to compare the two, my interpretation is simply one of these to give a rough idea for viewers. Thanks for watching
Now we know why they’re wringers, pushy and uptight
Could you do Germany vs NZ?
Heya! Thanks for the suggestion I’ll add it to the list!
You have not corrected the figures to take into account wages. In NZ people are paid less than Uk. In some roles what you earn in GBP you the same in NZD so you have twice as much buying power and things in Nz seem cheap to someone from UK
I live in New Zealand, I went on a month trip to UK. I spnt around 50% less there overall than I would have in NEw Zealand. Despit paying rent in Auckland whilst I was in England... as well as paying airbnb in england.... If you go to countdown here and I buy for a meal for 2 I usually end up wih 70-100 bill for like 5 items...
@@trollpolice280 just reading my post to be clear i am saying its cheaper in uk for a nz person and its even cheaper for a uk petson as they earn twice as much for my industry IT
@@matthewduck2060 Gotcha ;)
Good video but because UK is in pounds i would assume theres alot more but you have provided in NZ for prices
Thanks for watching! The difficulty of course is finding equivalent products between the two countries. Everything is converted from GBP to NZD.
Canada vs Nz next video please
Thanks Mani! That sounds like a great idea, I'd be very curious too!
Picking London to compare is an unfair comparison, your better to compare up north in UK
Hawaii vs NZ plz
Love the suggestion - being an island country too, it'd be interesting to compare. It would be so nice to live there, and if the prices are cheaper, even better!
The cost of power in UK is out of control. This place is done, and I can't wait to get back to newzealand. The quality of life here is just awful
Same here brother. Moving back in January 2024. Cannot stand UK, it’s absolutely miserable.
I don't know about your situation in the UK but me and my partner are paying similar in power and rent to nz but our house here (in the UK) is double glazed and much warmer for a similar price
Your UK analysis is already obsolete.
Hi Steve. Given exchange rates change daily, as does market pricing, this is obviously inevitable. This video is simply meant to act as a rough indication on where prices sit relative to NZ
@@BrentColeman Power prices have surged in recent weeks... I think you'll find electricity is significantly cheaper in NZ Now. I was surprised at the supermarket pricing though because my experience in the UK is that a trolley of food was about 1/3 the price of purchasing the same trolley full in NZ (although this did include alcohol).
