Hi Lady! I am viewing your laundry on the road video, here is a hint that might work for you. I have a small salad spinner designated for our camp outs, some times you need to wash undergarments, etc. You can wash an item in the spinner, agitate it for a few minutes, rinse and spin all the water out and hang it to dry, works great! 😁

Started out from Florida to Arizona/Nevada in my Sienna just after Christmas and arrived just after New Year. Two of the nights out (truck stop, then BLM) minivan temp said 28 degrees. Best two nights ever! I love the cold and thought it fun to figure out clothes/blanket situation to stay warm. I've since invested in some more wool items. I agree with another commenter who said line side walls with pillows to keep from touching the coldest parts of the van. I had no aux elec. or heat or flame. Just turned the van on in the morning (love my heated seats!) and drove to the nearest coffee spot. Rather be cold than too hot. Can't sleep much too hot. Love your content...Happy travels!

In really cold weather I tape a hothands warmer to the bottom side of my water jug so it doesn't' t freeze. They are also good to tape on the butane can to keep the gas flowing better in freezing weather. It never gets the can too hot because the can cools from evaporative cooling as the gas burns. I only camp in really cold weather if it's necessary or I am on a ski/snowshoe overnight camping trip. In my van I plug in my 12v blanket and warm up my bed before nodding off. Everyone has their limits. I love how you set yours up to stay warm.

The snow pants are something I bring, just wool base layer under them. So easy and comfy too! Slip down booties with wool socks. Add yellow lights and a candle and it’s pretty warm . Hot drinks and a book keep you occupied. But a walk in wool socks and foam boots - feet stay warm from the friction . I have a remote start so I can start the van while preparing to get out of bed in the AM

I can tell you’ve had experience staying warm in the winter without central heating. I learned only because my hobby of amateur astronomy took me out to the California deserts in the winter time, to observe the stars. While no where near as harsh as the Midwest, it can still get down in the teens which is plenty cold for this California boy. Had to learn about layering by trial and error, something you already know. Standing outside all night though, I found using an oversized (4X) Down Parka is a game changer! I take mine with me anytime I expect the temperature to be 32F or below.

Another great Video, Dee! When I had to spend 45 days in overnight temps from sub zero to the 20s I knew I would need a heater, so I stayed on a hobby farm with electricity available and used a space heater. That might sound like cheating, but at least it was tolerable. As soon as I could get away I headed to Phoenix! I wasn't concerned about keeping myself warm, it was my water tanks and refrigerator that needed the heat.

If you have the right equipment and well prepared, you can sleep in extreme freezing temperatures without being cold even without any heat in the van at all during the night.........winter sleeping bag that's designed for extreme freezing temps or a good thermal blanket that's designed for extreme freezing temps , a heated sleeping bag liner is also great or a heated throw/heated cushion, thermal slippers or extremely good thick thermal socks stop your feet from getting cold, a good thermal hat, thermal gloves, put small gas canister in bed with you will stop it from freezing, fill a thermos for morning because water in van will be frozen or put small bottle of water in bed with you , good thermal layers of clothing etc etc.

For me, the trick is to heat the car as much as bearable when driving, then keep it as sealed as possible, to keep the heat in.
Once the stuff inside is comfortable to touch (not cold) it will store the heat for you..
I live with too cold weather (for me) 8-9 months out of the year, so layering clothes, and knowing how to keep your home warm, is crucial.
Been looking after my childhood home as my parents went to Thailand (those bastards, I was supposed to be traveling south during my holiday 😜)
The house is very old, and huge, and open. And with the electric prices higher than ever, we are saving expenses by turning floor heating and such off, but the wood burning oven, needs to be running constantly, to keep this place warm. And if it dies out for a period of time, the cold just seeps back in, then it takes hours to get some heat back, days to warm the building itself..
So I'm good at figuring out how to keep warm, but my plan for the van, is to do like the birds, and migrate to warmer weather in the coldest months...
I am also insulating both floor and ceiling, just to keep it warmer.. I don't know if I will do the walls too, because I would like to use magnets, and I am not sure if they will work through the isolation, no matter how thin it is...
But I might just carpet it, so I don't have any cold metal.... 😅

Probably if you started the fire outside soon as you got there, you would be nice and toasty when you go back out. Also if you have a grid to put over fire pit then you could have cooked. Best to keep inside once warm closed off from outside,a headlight is useful when outdoors. Once you're back inside you will feel super warm. All in all you were brave.

So interesting seeing you go through the process of being in freezing temperatures. This is something I might need to consider eventually. My plan is generally to follow the nice weather once I travel further afield, but if I ever end up in Tasmania (the Island at the bottom end of Australia) in winter, I'd better be ready for it.

    Hi again DEE
    BRRR!
Never thought you'd give freezing a try but not surprising because of your adventurous spirit! You surely have a system how to do it and were wonderfully prepared. Takes alot of forethought to get ready for sure. Thinking on the long haul those temps could get very wearing but many are doing it. Safety has to always come first and if all protection is in place and someone enjoys it then great...
Another great info vid to help others prepare or decide for their possibility living in those temps. Thinking you'll head to warmer weather but a great diversion huh?! Stay safe and hope your arm keeps healing good. Thx as always and catcha next time.

It is a miserable feeling to wake up cold. But it sure is invigorating! I used a truck-tent one night at the Marfa Lights viewing area and about the time it dropped near freezing, I'd had enough. I've since invested in a 12v heating blanket and plan to take a heat source on future outings like that.

I camp in a FTC also. I spread my 12v blanket in my sleeping bag and warm it up before getting in before getting in. I don't use it all night because I have to budget the battery charge. I sleep with a butane canister in the foot of my sleeping bag so I can have coffee in the am.
The only thing I would wish for is a remote starter so I could stay cozy until the car warms up.

I thought so, too, until I saw her using dairy products. So bad for personal health and the environment, not to mention the poor cows, babies taking away from their mothers so that humans can have their milk. Mother cows are extremely, extremely maternal, and I cry four days for the babies are taken away. The females are fed artificial milk and go back into the system as dairy cows. The males have a worse fate, after becoming veal. They live in tiny uninsulated sheds out in the weather so that they don't have much room to move around so that they don't become muscular and their flesh is tender when they are killed at a very young age.

A couple of low 20 degree nights in the desert had me adjusting my night routine! I now make a pot of hot water in the evening to make a cup of herbal tea, a thermos of coffee for the morning (so I don’t have to get up and cook!) and either a Scrubbez bath or hot water bottle. I also found that if I put my down coat under my blanket and over my feet and legs I stay toastier and the coat is warmer to put on in the morning. I usually stick a pullover sweater under the covers too. I also fill those door cracks with pillows to keep the cold air from seeping in. Cold weather camping is for the brave, isn’t it?!

And we will be 2... which, goodness, looking at your space, it makes me wonder a bit how THAT is going to go 😂 but, bit late now 😂😂 Van is bought! (& June is start to build out month 🤞🏼). A friend & I slept in my van with no insulation in the Porcupine Mountains in the UP of MI, the outside temp got to - 27 F degrees below O. The condensation froze on the steel walls & roof then when we started the motor to turn on the heat it rained! Winter camping can be memorable for sure.

I could have continued. As long as you have gas in your tank-you are probably good. It’s a matter of willingness to stay. For me, the cold is not something I enjoy. So I move out of those situations to warmer areas. If you are stationary in a cold place, I would say you might check into a heat source that works while you are stationary for long periods of time. For occasional periods of colder than I’m used to (2-3 days) this method worked really well. My van warms up so fast and I stay comfortable for hours. If I were living consistently in the cold. I’d want to have a more constant heat source that wouldn’t require starting my van up every time. A lot of Van lifers have diesel heaters installed for that. Hope this helps.🤗
