Thank you SO much for this video and the laughs 😂 Been playing GTA V since the release and although I’m a novice rail fan; the amount of RR follies I’ve noticed over the years in the game have annoyed my fellow players in my group when I’m calling out inaccuracies. Glad I’m not alone. It is quite nice though to catch the train, stand in an open well car…drink a Pisswaser and randomly chuck explosives out at passing cars or fellow players😂
I didn't know Hyce had muscle car knowledge. Dude just gets cooler with every video I watch. Also the really spicy area at the end, you actually drive a train though that in the single player! The only instance in the game where you get to drive a train, and it goes through that mess!
This is exactly the kind of pedantic nerdy stuff I live for! An expert in the field going into games and pointing out all the little obscure things they got wrong. Oh, that was so much fun! Thank you, Hyce! Please, I beg you, let this be the start of an ongoing series! Some other possible candidates that I can recall: Red Dead Redemption 2, especially around Saint Denis; absurdly tight turnouts and British signals abound. L.A. Noire, because only Union Pacific ran chibi streamliners out of Union Station, plus a little Pacific Electric streetrunning and Russian boxcars. Mafia: Definitive Edition; What even are these steam locomotives?! And what even is this harbor railroading? Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, because broad gauge Terriers were totally a thing, right? Might want to rope Leighton into this one for extra UK knowledge.
Given how you reacted to the railway inaccuracies in GTA, I can only imagine what you'd think of Choo Choo Charles. (I've played Gta 5 many times as well, but the only railway inaccuracies I noticed myself were the crunchy curves and the bogies not turning with the track, which sort of ruined the immersion).
I think that if we take many of things here at face value, it might suggest that there used to be commuter rail. It would explain the sign (the RR likely isn't going to update it if they don't have to), the various boxes also suggest the RR didn't bother pulling anything more than they had to. It doesn't explain everything (and the one platform doesn't really make sense where it is, although maybe it used to make more sense at some point in the past). Also, when you saw the E signs near the end of track, my first thought was E for End of track.
Looks like Rockstar needs to contract you, Hyce, to design the railroad signaling assets for GTA6 Also, you need a "What the HONK is this HONK doing here!?" shirt
Awesome Video Hyce! I too always wondered why these signals were like this and too this day it still bugs me. The cantilevers also bug me. There should be a crossbuck on the mast above the lights and where the left crossbuck is should be lights.
The grids at 14:30 look a bit like TPWS grids from the British railway network where you have 1 grid on the track where the signal is and another grid between 50 and 450 metres before the signal depending on line speed.
I’d love more videos in this vein! Funnily enough, my local railroad sometimes runs with roughly equivalent headways, although at much lower speeds! My favorite bit of stupidity in GTA V is still the random early 20th century British open wagons scattered around the map.
10:56 - 11:28 Seen that a time or two before 😂 @Hyce jolly good show bro :) Keep this "Trains done wrong in games" thing going 😂It's an excellent watch for sure
It's funny, I was just talking to my wife last night about why movies like The Polar Express are banned in our house. It was her decision because I can't help but point out every inaccuracy every time we watch it. It's like a tick, I can never keep my nerdery to myself.
I'd love to see a look at the Fallout 4 locomotive, it looks like something someone threw together in Gmod and has a lot of stuff wrong with it. The thing that tends to stick out is that it has no pistons, but it's likely intended to be a turbine locomotive, potentially a nuclear-powered one, but that does little to solve the rest of its issues.
Going to guess all the rail signals are probably named something like trainsignal1 trainsignal2 etc and I'll bet the rail signal cantilever is probably a similar naming to the crossing cantilever so when populating the line I'll bet the road crossing for the train is the coding guy clicking a line up or down from the line signals.
One place I LOVE that they put in is that abandoned ROW. I cant remember the name of the location, but it is very nice. Also one thing that ALWAYS makes me mad, is when the switches HAVE NO SWITCH FROG!! I can understand not adding guard rails for poly count, but even a simple textured frog would look nice!! And when train crossings just have the rail clip thru the road spline without any gaps for flanges, those make me extra mad. Love the video Hyce!! I would love to see a video on how to place signals correctly / realistically in train sims like Trainz and/or Railworks, because I always never know when to place a three head, two head, single head signal and where Have a wonderful day!!
There's a super scuffed abandoned railyard somewhere too, with about a dozen more british open waggons and flatbeds and a tank car that's permanently stuck in a shed since its too tall for the doorway which found very amusing. Pretty sure I saw a container flat loaded with rails somewhere too.
Hey Hyce me and a friend of mine have created a railroad on railroads online named B&M lines, with the solgan of " Breaking shit & making a Mess", with a subsidiary named A&S railway and it's solgan of "We're always full of it" we're hopes to building a connection to the ES&D.
A couple of other things I noticed are those British 5 plank wagons are also at the smelters in the city, god knows why they are. There's more derailed wells in the desert just left by the trackside. There's also one spot on the map where you can find wells cars that have been double stacked, parked under the freeway when half the bridges and tunnels on the map are too low to allow a double stack to pass under them.
As an artists who is in charge of putting "things in places you'd expect things," this is the type or real-world criticism I love to watch because it shows how to NOT fuck it up on the next go-around. It's not something some of my colleagues care to do themselves, and I wish it was more popular of a thing to do. Edit: 13:16, LMAO congrats on finding a ladder that doens't have a climb function attached to it too! The way ladders work is you just walk up to them and you auto-latch to it. This one is broken.
I feel like in the map creation tools, they probably used some kind of brush tool that automatically places things from a pool of various assets at random distances along the ail. Probably did that for most of the rail and then just zoomed in and manually added some 'cool train stuff' around more etailed area like yards and stations and such.
There's a mission where you use the switch tower at the quarry to divert a train off the main and into the quarry's siding and I'm pretty sure it uses the diamond at that junction as the switch. Also in the southeastern section of the city there's a defunct section at a steel mill with vintage European cars with old chain couplers and buffers on the cars.
I started modding GTA V a bit ago, specifically using the "Kitsune trains" and "Railroad Engineer" mods. It made things much better, ie the ability to operate the locomotives and pilot the subways, , classic trains, redone track layout, ect. One of the first things I ever saw in the game was the improperly placed crossing signal in the thumbnail. It was at that time seeing that signal that I decided I needed to learn how to fix Rockstar's mistakes, and also went from driving cars to driving trains any time I play.
There is one gate that flashes and lowers correctly with the correct warning time until the train gets there. The one in sandy shores next to the airport
24:15 Trucks are waiting in the yard, tackling them with easel. Show the world what I can do, gaily boasts the diesel. In and out he creeps about, like a big black weasel. When he pulls the wrong trucks out, POP GOES THE DIESEL! (insert troublesome trucks laughter)
I started a series a few weeks ago where I do this in 60 seconds, because honestly, this is my favorite thing to do when I get a game and find trains in it. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
7:00 the barrier was missing because someone destroyed it, or something like that because normally there are barriers that do close and ligths that do work
It really infuriates railroad experts when railroading equipment is put in weird places, curves and switches being spicy, railcars blocking the mainline, FOREIGN RAILCARS IN AMERICA, rail lines separating and joining together, grades being too steep, crossing slabs being huge for small roads, and freight trains mixed up in a wacky way. Sometimes, the people who don't know much about trains, gets atleast some right. I was slightly annoyed by what we saw. Let them figure out what is required to make a proper railroad![That was a joke.] Great video by the way! 19:10 I honestly wasn't expecting you to mention The Galaxy Railways, or Big One AT ALL!!! I happen to watch some of the show myself. [It's fine]
So far my strategy of watching this vid before watching your other explainer vid, with no previous knowledge of train signals or infrastructure, has been very entertaining
Rockstar North (developer of GTA V) is based in Scotland which may shed some light on why there are some weird British-like traits of the Los Santos railroad
9:15 "Civil engineers will have things to say about that." I DO. Edit: the longer I watch the more the signal arrangements remind me of what I have to do in Trainz to make the AI cooperate.
The gates do work but some player recently broke a gate as such they will no longer function. In reference to 7:42 that is why some are missing and they arent functional

That Laugh at 10:59 gets me every time. It wholesome
This is exactly the kind of pedantic nerdy stuff I live for! An expert in the field going into games and pointing out all the little obscure things they got wrong. Oh, that was so much fun! Thank you, Hyce! Please, I beg you, let this be the start of an ongoing series!
Some other possible candidates that I can recall:
Red Dead Redemption 2, especially around Saint Denis; absurdly tight turnouts and British signals abound.
He's played choo choo charles on-stream, the VOD is on his channel
I think that if we take many of things here at face value, it might suggest that there used to be commuter rail. It would explain the sign (the RR likely isn't going to update it if they don't have to), the various boxes also suggest the RR didn't bother pulling anything more than they had to. It doesn't explain everything (and the one platform doesn't really make sense where it is, although maybe it used to make more sense at some point in the past). Also, when you saw the E signs near the end of track, my first thought was E for End of track.
Yes but also no
you forgot about the 7 planks near the amunation in east Los Santos
Looks like Rockstar needs to contract you, Hyce, to design the railroad signaling assets for GTA6
Also, you need a "What the HONK is this HONK doing here!?" shirt
I noticed the European tankers on the train but the American ones are in a siding
Great video Hyce! Hopefully we get to see more shenanigans in the future!
14:14 that loops like a TPWS grid (basically if a train goes past a red signal TPWS trips and activates an emergency brake application)
As an English person I had no idea that we were the only ones who had those eight plank open wagons. I thought they were a world wide thing.
The fallout 4 locomotive is tall rocket Amtrak steam
It's always a fun time, when Smells like Kenosha starts playing. Even when Hyce isn't driving a train, you know something's gonna go wrong lmao
Fun fact. If you jump on the train you can see that the wheels dont have the spinny roundy animation and they just stay still😛
I love your garage at the beginning of the video, thats totally my taste
23:17 finally the switches that you wanted on railroads online!
I would love to see a video on how to place signals correctly / realistically in train sims like Trainz and/or Railworks, because I always never know when to place a three head, two head, single head signal and where
Have a wonderful day!!
If they removed all the redundant signals, they would probably have enough polygons to make guard rails.
Now I'm not gona be able to unsee all the weird discrepencies on gta tracks
You get a green signal! You get a green signal! And you get a green signal! Everybody gets a green signal!!!
The moment Hyce sees those 8 plank wagons and goes full German accent is priceless.
7:00 the barrier was missing because someone destroyed it, or something like that because normally there are barriers that do close and ligths that do work
Thank you! I work for the railroad and have always noticed how terrible the railroad signals were😅😂
It really infuriates railroad experts when railroading equipment is put in weird places, curves and switches being spicy, railcars blocking the mainline, FOREIGN RAILCARS IN AMERICA, rail lines separating and joining together, grades being too steep, crossing slabs being huge for small roads, and freight trains mixed up in a wacky way.
[It's fine]
This was way funnier than I thought it would be! Love it!
It's fine.
It would be awesome if they consulted actual railroad/signal engineers for GTA6.
I just burst out laughing the moment I saw the title
The British wagons delight me every time.
There's actually an industrial estate full of British wagons, with a flat wagon variant
Jolly good fun my wagons have arrived!😂
9:15 "Civil engineers will have things to say about that."
I DO.
Edit: the longer I watch the more the signal arrangements remind me of what I have to do in Trainz to make the AI cooperate.
I love how they put a railroad crossing cantilever over the tracks like a signal light
We need a live steam on GTA of Hyce doing Hyce things
That sudden rush of anxiety when Kenosha starts playing in a GTAV video
I knew it was a matter of time until you saw the British wagons. 😂 I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw them.
If you go to the steel plant in the NE corner of the city, you will find British 7 plank coal cars.
You missed the crossbuck with the stopsign there around the 8:15 mark aimed at the train lmao
Fuck
The gates do work but some player recently broke a gate as such they will no longer function. In reference to 7:42 that is why some are missing and they arent functional
