"Two Faced Woman" danced by both Joan Crawford and Cyd Charisse, narrated by Debbie Reynolds. Ms. Charisse's scene was going to be in The Band Wagon, but was later cut. I agree with the some who say they cut the wrong scene. "Tropical makeup" is not a good look on Ms. Crawford.
Wonderful performance by Joan Crawford. Absolutely beatiful in this!
"It's been suggested that they may have dropped the wrong version." No s---.
Very interesting. Thanks.
Love Cyd, such a classic beauty and amazing talent.
Dennis Sanders Her version seems much more choreographed.
"Tropical makeup" mhm sure
Brittany Dennison thank you 🙏🏾
Not only in blackface, but black LEGS
Is it really that serious. You better be lucky she's not saying "F*ck that n*gger, A little bit color" "My mami lets me do as I please". Especially since this was made decades ago.
They prob did it because the voice, sexy though it is, didn't really fit Cyd's face (if that makes any sense :p) That voice sounds like it could have come from Joan, though. I prefer the scene with Cyd but the voice goes better with Joan's mature, don;t-give-a-crap attitude.
This clip was taken from That's Entertainment, I forget if it was 1 or 2, and features the split screen. The number with Joan Crawford appeared in the movie Torch Song. The number with Cyd Charisse was supposed to be in The Band Wagon, but was cut.
Just saw both Entertainment movies and this number was not in it.

it's a shame that Band Wagon deleted this gorgeous performance from Cyd the great!
***** and those looong legs. when i was a kid, i was a bit bore by watching Singing In The Rain, then Cyd happened to become on the screen with that green dress, i got stunned and excited. i watched that scene over and over not the famous umbrella scene. YES, SHE'S THE TRIPLE THREAT!
Three other numbers were deleted from the Bandwagon all with either Cyd, Fred or both.
@@jackanthony976 What were their titles? Hope they post to UA-cam.
Whether it's right or wrong, I'm really not sure why the song called for a blackening up. ???
An homage to Kamala Kneepads
@EatPlums That was not paying "homage" she simply insulted a community of people and beyond that... IT WAS BLACK FACE! It's ridiculous that you think she was doing blacks a favor...
1-800-beyourownpeace hey, 1-800-eat-Schitt, it's obvious from your comments that you hate white people. Please take your vile hatred elsewhere.
i kept staring at the tv trying to figure out if i was seeing it right? then i chalked it up to the time period; it was supposed to be a showy number with lots of costume? it would have been better (imho) in a roaring 20's/guys-n-dolls setting (since she was supposed to be a 'bad girl' in the scene?
@EatPlums So why not use black performers?
India Adams did the great vocal.
She was one of the most popular vocal artists of the 50s - I think she dubbed for Rita Hayworth also - not sure.
@@ldaxxx1 Yes. Affair in Trinidad, Miss Sadie Thompson and Pal Joey.
Jmgirl it was dubbed by singer India Adams but they're both was great lip singing to the song
Cyd Charisse is superb. There is simply no explanation for Crawford's Two Faced Woman.
The singing voice of India Adams doesn't go well with Cyd but does with Crawford.
What most people are missing is these are from two different movies, Crawford used it (because both she and Cyd were being dubbed by the same singer) in her later movie "Torch Song", although I wish she hadn't (blackface really?).Later met Cyd, always a lady.
It's "tropical makeup" according to Debbie lol
Back when this was made, blackface wasn't considered offensive. Doesn't make it right, but it does provide context, which is severely lacking in the comprehension of the UA-camrs leaving comments on here.
@@KingTriton1837 it wasn't offensive... to who?
@@Daisylion1 to the audience.... of the time. Jesus. Did you read anything I wrote?
@@KingTriton1837 It was offensive back then too. Just not to the WHITE people in the audience.
It was shown in That's Entertainment Part 3.
Not the full version.
i'm confused. Was the split screen and cross cutting between Charisse and Crawford only as it appeared in this voice-over documentary ? because Joan Crawford does not appear otherwise in the film "Band Wagon'. Does that mean this Two Faced Woman cut from "Band Wagon" was only ever a number featuring Cyd Charisse exclusively?
Yes, the split screen was only for the voice-over documentary. Joan Crawford does not appear in the Bandwagon. Joan's version was filmed for the movie Torch Song. Cyd's version was cut from the final release print of the Bandwagon.
JACK ANTHONY thank God you explained !! I was very confused .
Thanks for clarifying. most helpful !
Crawford at her most terrifying. The testicle-shriveling ending where she rips off her wig and has bright orange hair?
Best part of the movie! EVERYONE in this always wears flourescent orange lipstick, even Crawford's mother. She even wears it to bed!
That wa she’s natural hair color
@@ferociousgumby the one scene where she's wearing a neon yellow pajama outfit clashes with the hair color even more!?
doesn't it seem crazy? i get the idea from all i've heard that joan was so particular about things, but at some point she went from wearing her hair sleek and more naturally, to a jet-orange 'wedge' to a jet-black pompadour-flip, and so many roles after that made her such a coarse bully like this one? is it suposed to be ironic that her love interest was blind?
does anyone know where i can get the cyd versin video
It is here on UA-cam, yes, the full version. You can also find it on the newest DVD release of the Bandwagon.
is there a ful version of cyd charisse dancing two faced women??
Yes. Right here on UA-cam. It is fabulous. You can also find the full Cyd Charise version of Two Faced Woman on the newest DVD release of The Bandwagon under the Deleted Scenes section. I read somewhere that Cyd's version was deleted from the final release print of The Bandwagon because Cyd already had multiple dance numbers in the movie and that the Two Faced Woman number would delete the impact of the grand dance finale of The Bandwagon. In fact, I also read that three other dance numbers with Cyd Charise and or Fred Astaire were cut from the Bandwagon. Perhaps studio politics was involved as well...who really knows?
Love joan
odontologos en lucha get to a drink, and FAST!
odontologos en lucha I meant SHRINK!
The two versions really can't be compared. They are completely different. Joan was actually good in this, but the choreography was unfortunately crummy, as well as the heavy makeup.
Plus it wasn't her voice, so pretty awful.
This was after almost everybody understood that blackface was disrespectful and hurtful. What were they thinking?
It's not blackface. Like with actual black and white (for the mouth) makeup Judy Garland wears in Everybody Sing.
Joan Crawford's version should not have made the movie Torch Song. This is creepy and offensive.
Ok you are obviously clueless, and blind. the point of Joan's version is to be creepy and offensive.
why black face ..insulting
It's tropical makeup, fool!
Well...no real comparison...irregardless of how you feel about Crawford or the "tropical" (!) makeup. Charise was a trained ballerina with a fantastic instrument (her body)...way better version.
The voice used for Crawford suits her more than Charisse.
"Tropical makeup". That's an interesting way to say blackface.
Blackface is actual black makeup with white around the mouth like Judy Garland in Everybody Sing.
Tropical makeup.... what? That's sounding like a euphemism
Why didn't Arthur Freed just hire Lena Horne to do the number?
Cause they banned mixed couple relationships in movies 😔 same reason she didn't get Julie Laverne in showboat.
Perhaps Lena Horne did not dance, at Joan's ex- flapper epitome level.
@@Kuku1123 She didn't have to be Michael Wilding's love interest, just do this number.
In the 1950s theaters were still segregated, and MGM did not want to hurt the film's boxoffice. Many Southern theaters - a large maket - would not show pictures with a Black female lead. This is why MGM cast Ava Gardner in SHOW BOAT, and dubbed her voice, even though Lena Horne would have been absolutely perfect for Julie - and could also sing.
….
Why MGM cut the Cyd Charisse number is a mystery, since she was a beautiful dancer. Crawford had lovely legs, and was a good dancer, but could not compare with Charisse. And why on earth was Crawford made up in unattractive blackface, since she was a beautiful woman in her own right? And what was the purpose of her yanking off that wig? Yikes! TORCH SONG was Crawfod's swan song at MGM, and she never worked there again...not too surprising.
It wasn't blackface it was tropical makeup. Who knows why Crawford didn't work for MGM again.
The most elegant, greatest female dancer in Hollywood History, Cyd Charisse being compared to Medusa and true Dragon of Hollywood, Joan Crawford
This isn't so bad that it's good....it's JUST BAD.
The comparison is unfair. Joan Crawford was at least 15 years older and had a less creative director. And yet her version is more compelling, despite its dubious taste. And there was no need to cut it to make Crawford look ridiculous. How would narrator Debbie Reynolds have felt if they'd shown a clip of "Unsinkable Molly Brown" and voiceover announced, "Here's Debbie Reynolds in a part she had to beg for and only got because Shirley MacLaine wasn't available"? (True, incidentally.)
Questionable Racial politics...Crawford in "Black face". .the notion of the Mulatto / Bi racial woman as a "two-faced" / duplicitous Jezebel. Definitely a piece that could use a little CRT analysis.
i think she looks fantastic in the black makeup
It's not black.
The Crawford version is beyond appalling, and wrong in more ways than I can count. Cyd's version isn't great either, but at least she bring some class and talent to it.
Cyd had class and talent. Joan had talent, but not much class.
The Crawford number is awful! 😱Wow! What was the point of the so-called tropical makeup anyway? Yikes it's 1953 not 1923!
Exactly, it was 1953 and the civil rights movement hadn’t even happened yet. Socially it was very much like the 20s probably worse than the 20s if we’re being honest.
People need to learn to stop projecting current values on things that were made by **middle aged** people before they were even thought of, let alone conceived…
The year was 1953 and blackface wasn’t considered offensive to many. Blackface wasn’t really frowned upon by most until the late 1980’s/early 1990’s. Does that make it right? Ofcourse not but it’s quite obviously not the same as someone in 2021 doing it.
Context is key and moral values have changed, thank god, but this doesn’t make Joan Crawford a racist.
It's actually blackface makeup.
Joan looked like a drag queen. She really had a very hard look about her.
Joan Crawford does a terrible rendition of "Two Faced Woman." I agree with the critics: the wrong version was cut from "The Bandwagon" movie. Cyd Charisse was much better as well as better looking than Joan. The first time I saw Joan doing it, my first thought was WTF? What a horrible blackface number.
I usually really enjoy Joan as a performer but I completely agree! Cyd was outstanding in the number that was cut shown here, what a shame.
@@sapphireheart5757 India Adams dub doesn't go with Cyd.
Yeah Joan’s version wipes the floor with that other beige chiffon nonsense
Joan's version is terrible.
Have you seen Judy and Mickey in blackface? That's creepy
Joan look like black Frankenstein here
Go Joan, work that blackface. Get over it people, stop judging the past by today's so called standards. IE the Confederacy. Get a life.
You forgot the #MAGA
Shut the hell up
Blackface is racist and offensive whatever era it is used in.
well Joan Crawford was god awful
