  • The pond is a natural spring on my property. The water is murky at the moment from all off the exercises I have been doing with the horses. Once the bottom settles, it will be clear again.
    Yes, this is a mix herd; the white horse “Prince”, and the little pony “Reese’s” are geldings. The rest of the horses in the video are mares and/or fillies. My Clydesdale”Sarge” is also a gelding, but he is not fond of the water.
    I am building my horse farm to emulate how horses would be in the wild (as much as possible). And I am spending my life researching and learning how horses communicate with each other, especially through their body language. I really appreciate everyone sharing their observations and/or experiences with their horses in the comments.
    From my observation, Prince does a perfect job displaying his horse natural instincts. He feels safe in this setting, as is a fun participant of the herd. Javelin is my lead mare; shes looking out from outside the pond and ensuring the herd is always looked after. Javelin has all the characteristics of a natural leader, but she does not like the water …😝
    During this video, the herd (well 5/7 horses) will go to or in the water, it looks like Sarge and Javelin are lagging behind and grazing up the hill.
    It almost looks like Javelin is showing an observational behavior, similar to horse interaction in the wild, protecting and caring for the herd.
    One day I hope to have the opportunity to watch Horse body language in the wild, and learn to identify their natural instincts. However, at this time, taking part and observing the display of my domesticated horses is helping me to understand horses so much more!
    Patriot is my little filling the video . She turned 1 years old at the end of April; she’s huge !
    Maverick is my 3 years old; and this was our first ever ride ( or at least sitting on her back). I look forward to Maverick turning 4 so I can really continue with her training.

      I remember reading that Native Americans took horses into water before trying to ride them, instead of the cowboy way of “breaking” them.
      I do know from having a horse when I was a teen, he liked to splash water before attempting to cross it, even if the water wasn’t deep.

      @@Curioushorse This is my first time here, but it seemed to me that she totally trusts you! I love watching horses swim! JR at Homestead Horsemanship swims his horses in the river on his property, and it's always a beautiful thing to watch! And a very valuable training tool too!
      He has a 3 year old Clydesdale rescue that loves the water so much that he practically purrs! Last year it sounded like a purr, but now it's more like a full throated moan of pleasure! It's hilarious! If you want to see it, go to that channel, then look in the playlist for Oliver. There is at least 1 video on swimming with him from last year, and 1 from this year. There are also swimming videos with other horses too. In some he explains how it's a helpful training tool. Although it seems that maybe you already have a handle on that.
      But unless your bodyweight is totally supported by the water it's too early to ride your yearling. So please don't do it for long periods, or too often. A little bit in the water like this, now and then, should be ok. She's big for a yearling, and you're not a really heavy guy, but she still has a baby's spine tendons and ligaments for another couple of years at least.
      I really like how you try to set her or them up for success, and keep it short and sweet. A pleasant and fun experience. No wonder your horses seem so eager to be with you and please you!
      I subbed, and liked the video, and look forward to seeing more! From Barb in Edmonton Alberta. And have a great birthday and a wonderful year!

      He uses treats, but says he only ever gives them in a bucket, or on the ground, etc. But I don't think he labelled the video(s) where he discussed it. He says treats in the hand cause the horses to learn to disrespect you. The Indians broke all their horses in water. It's harder for a horse to buck in water as it is on land. It's much easier on the horse as well . For a first timer you both did real good.

    Not a fan of anyone getting on any horse under age 4. Especially not an adult weight rider. A 3yo horse's spinal column is not yet mature (some horses take longer.) Riding an immature back shortens the horse's working life. We need to stop riding babies.

    Why don't you do normal groundwork with them?? I am training horses since over 40 year's and if you learn natural horsemanship you don't need a pond.

    • @Curioushorse
      @Curioushorse  28 днів тому

      Hi Horse-Lover. So cool you have been training for 40 years ! I look forward to learning about your experiences.
      I mainly use the round pen too, but the pond is a fun bonding exercise for us, and I try to switch it up. I do practice, natural horsemanship, but can definitely step up the exercises.
      I did like the idea of having no gravity in the pond though, and I am planning on working on Jananas mount in the pond soon.

      @@Curioushorse Hi, it is no nice of you to write me back. Thank you so much!! Yes I am sure it is an excellent bonding exercise!!! I thought maybe you did not do any groundwork but I was wrong. Sadly I am from tiny Austria/Europe and I don't know anybody who has a pond here. When I was a child there was more nature here and we loved to go in the water with the horses. I never tried it but I think it is a good idea to get on them in the pond. The native American's did the same. I wish you the best and much fun with your horses, Gets from Austria 🙋❤️🇦🇹🐎

    Why sit on a baby 3 years old?

    • @Curioushorse
      @Curioushorse  29 днів тому +2

      I do not believe in riding a horse until they are 4 years old. Even at 4 years old, I think it should initially be restricted to 10-15 riding intervals,for a light weight rider that is WAY below the 20% weight ratio recommendation.
      At 3 yr 5 months I do believe it was ok to put light weight on Maverick back in the water for 1-2 minutes to practice the mount. I probably weigh less than 12% of Mavericks weight.
      *In this video Maverick was 3 years and 5 months. I will likely wait until 6 months before practicing this outside the water.
      I appreciate your comment. I am extremely careful with my babies, I will do more research to ensure this was acceptable. Again this channel is about redefining what’s best for our horses.
