- It's been a weird year, not least because it's already drawing to an end. Yes, it really is October, which means the Oscars race is slowly warming up, and Netflix has just chucked out a trailer for its most Oscary Oscar-hopeful yet.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, Hillbilly Elegy tells the tale of a young Marine-turned-Yale student named J.D. on the verge of landing his dream job, only for family drama to strike. His struggling mother - played by six-time Oscar nominee (zero-time winner) Amy Adams - is an addict, while his grandmother - played by seven-time Oscar nominee (zero-time winner) Glenn Close - has her own problems.
"By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience," reads the synopses from Netflix, which adds that 11-time Oscar nominee and one-time winner Hans Zimmer has scored the movie.
If it wasn't clear enough, everything about that smells of Oscars gold. You have two Academy favourites being directed by an award-winning filmmaker, set to the sound of another Oscar stalwart. Plus, the make-up looks incredible, and the emotions look set to get very, very high. If Hillbilly Elegy doesn't get a few nominations at this year's upcoming Oscars, we'll eat our cinema membership cards.
Hillbilly Elegy comes to select cinema in November and arrives on Netflix November 24. While we await the movie, be sure to check out the best Netflix movies you can watch right now - including some actual Oscar winners.

Unfortunately, this story is nothing new for Appalachia. I grew up in West Virginia where 80% of the town was on assistance and drugs/alcohol are a huge problem. My mom had to step in to help my nieces from time to time and my brother is currently dealing with addiction to heroin.
While comedic, I think about the doc with the "Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia." I hope this movie brings more light to this demographic of struggling people.

When I saw the film, I got emotional as much as you because, brought me lots of nostalgic from those movies I used to watch with my dad, who passed away. So that's why Hillbilly Elegy is so meaningful to me.

I read this book 2 summers ago. Mark you will love the movie. You will definitely relate very much to the main character. I literally could not put the book down. I read it in 3 days and that's very fast for me. I can't wait to see it.

Awhhhhhhhhhh, bless you it made me cry I understand. The movie to me is a typical hard working American, family. Hillbillies I know live deep in the country and hills down dirt roads where children don't have shoes or wear them because the have two pairs one for school the other home have holes tore up this does exist in the USA, in winter sever poverty many die of pneumonia. Let me tell you they don't have indoor toilet plumbing some who do can't pay to get plumbing or repair plumbing because it's broken. By the end of the month the propane used for cooking heating goes out until a check comes in. Cars broken down no gas to get in town see a doctor if no medical insurance no get to see the doctor just die. This is hidden the world does not know about it. The truth would make a great documentary only people from these areas know where they are I'M one of them. Nothing in the world is they way we think people say America, come here when the truth is old American, famlies of our nation live in great poverty nobody cares they are left out never mentioned. It's always the same story go to military war serve try to learn a profession then one gets medical insurance for life if they survive wars. Sadly come home with PTSD and pass on to the children. Many of the children get trafficked drugged or work 12- 15 underage at chicken farms and field workers to help support family so much horror involved then society gossips on them their offspring life falls lower into depths of a empty shell. I'M sorry, but it's true yes, the world is telling us wake up your doing wrong we have become greedy environment who worships the wealthy placed objects first then forgot about real love famlies and society.

Will definiteky watch "Hillbilly Elegy"...Glenn Close and Amy Adams both brilliant actresses, I hate to drag politics into art but I can't cast the thought out of my head that most of those kind of folks are Trump supporters and they really don't cotton to Black folk, Mexicans and the like...How would I know this? I grew up in poor Appalachia, in the heart of the Cherokee National Forest, TN and I will say that the book does a terrible job representing the true reasons behind the desperation and destitution of the people of Appalachia. The book and film are an insult to those of us who lived those tough lives. I for one will not be watching.
