  • And this wasn't even everything! Don't get me started on vertex shading and indexed colour ranges...
In this video I take a look at the visuals of late 90s and early 2000s videogames and how / why they all have a certain "dark" aesthetic to them, hopefully it didn't come across as too schizo.

So, this is how it felt when I described the history of the Star Wars EU to my parents.
Seeing teenagers do reports on your history is surreal.

Great video! As someone who grew up in the 90s, I can confirm that you got this spot-on. It's one of the reasons why I love the 90s still. A lot of mainstream stuff had a weird, slightly quirky, darkness to it. Whether it was gaming, cartoons, fashion, or music. Sure - you had The Spice Girls, Britney and Hanson, but you also had The Prodigy, Sneaker Pimps, Faithless, Underworld, and countless others adding a bit of contrast to even the most mainstream of pop radio stations. There's a reason why Madonna's music video for 'Frozen' looks the way it does. You didn't have to go to Grunge or Nu Metal to see something a bit more "dark".
Anyway, good job on the video. Make more when you get the time and inspiration strikes.
Sidenote: if you want get even more of a feel for what it was like during those days, look up a show called 'Cybernet'. There are several almost full episodes here on YT. That was our go-to source of video game news.

I've found that young people this days don't get that feeling we got on the past, people my age know what I mean, the "this graphics are peak, they can't get any better!" feeling. I started my journey with the SNES and every new console that comes out I have the same awe feeling that I got from Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.

I predate you a bit as a 80's kid that started my journey on Atari 2600 and NES - but I mostly agree. However, the thing is that this wasn't unique to 3D Though. 🤔
I remember when I first saw Super Nintendo & Super Castlevania, and how it blew my mind how many colors were on the screen and how detailed the graphics where compared to my NES. I had played a bit of Sega Genesis prior and already thought that was peak graphics - but the Super Castlevania's graphics, the 'realistic sound' and all the buttons on the SNES controller... I remember how impressed I was.
I literally remember the first time I saw a color TV and SMB 3 running on it. 🤯
Same thing when I saw Mortal Kombat in arcades for the first time - just jaw dropping. Something that was only surpassed when I saw Wolfenstein 3D for the first time.... then Doom a few years later.... then Quake! The leap to 3D with the Saturn and PS1 (then later N64) was something else - probably the biggest leap I have ever experienced in my 40 years. But even by then, I had been thru several consoles and handheld launches and was warming up to expecting these kinds of leaps.
It wasn't just consoles or computers graphics either - the display upgrades I went thru during those decade were crazy too! I already told you how I felt when I first saw a game running on color TV, but what I haven't spoken of is the first time I got a PS1 and discovered what Composite video was! Before that I had been playing on RF with static. It was utterly a game changer. And then when the PS2 launched I got a bigger 19" color TV with S-video!!! It was another level of clarity and color vibrancy.. And yet again when Xbox 360 released and I got my first HDTV (this was BEFORE HDMI was standard) and experienced Component 720p (holy S**t)! 😍
There was something about growing up from playing Atari on a 9" Black and White TV, and progressing by massive leaps and bounds in a short time throughout my childhood to the time I was in High School and then Collage to a giant high fidelity screen, surround sound and realistic online gaming. From playing Adventure to playing Skyrim. Yes, you had to be there to appreciate what it was like - but that said.
While I used to feel like you about these things.... now I just sit back and relax. Maybe it's not important that this young person be able to experience everything we have - it's not important for their future or ability to enjoy old media, old games or older pop-culture to the same degree (or even at all). This is THEIR time and THEIR youth era/generation to explore and interact with THEIR pop-culture and media. We already lived our youths, and get to watch how much of the past they got right, and how much they missed and got incorrect.
Just consider that this kid was born when the XBox 360 and PS3 where out! At that time I was already well into my mid-20s (older than they are NOW!) and am old enough to be this persons father. Infact, that's only if I had a kid in my mid-20s... if I had a kid earlier (like some of my friends), then my child would be OLDER than them by several years! And I say this to make the point that most of these people are REALLY young, and the things they are talking about happened a long time ago sadly (we are getting old).... and when I say along time ago... to them it was A LOOOOOOONNNGGGG Time ago. 👴🎮💿📺
Expecting them to osmosify the context of the experience of being present as a teenage or adult in the early 2000s, 90s or 80s - is akin to our parents being annoyed because we made a YT video documenting a pop-cultural trend or piece of media in the early 1970s... and lacked to include the important details and finer points, that can be easily missed by someone who wasn't there (or where impossible to know unless you where there).
So I say: cut the younger generations a break! 🤷‍♂🙂

Limitations forced the creation of style and aesthetic. Now that we have practically limitless computing power, style is practically optional. Half the games that came out in the last five years look like they could've been mods of each other.
