Thanks for this segment, Joe. I love trips down memory lane more and more the older I get. That being said, I would have put Cookie Gilchrist on the mountain before Joe Cribbs but that might be a reflection of my age more than anything. I remember watching him (Cookie) and marveling at that way he could run through and over defenders, level defenders on a blocking assignment and catch the ball, lower his shoulder and move the chains when he was asked to do so.
I wouldn't have blamed you to also put Josh Allen on the Mount Rushmore RB face also. He already ranks 7th all time in rushing yards, and 3rd all time in rushing TDs, and probably after this season will be 5th and 2nd all time respectively. Think about it, that is crazy.
I was a big AFL fan when I first began to follow pro football in the early 1960s. I remember Cookie Gilchrist would run through a defensive line like a freight train. He was a fullback at a time when teams usually ran a two running back formation, with both the halfback and fullback carrying the ball. I think Elbert Dubenion’s nickname was Golden Wheels.
My Grandma used to work at a diner in Medina, NY and a lot of the SB Bills players would come that way to go hunting. She knew all the greats at that time. She loved it when Kelly would come through.
Great show, Joe. Agree with jean-paulscott on Fred Jackson! 100% every day, every play. He belongs on the Wall, maybe together with Kyle Williams--those two kept me sane through the Drought. I'm 75 and have been a Bills fan since day one, so I was a little disappointed that Cookie Gilchrist merited only an honorable mention, but I do agree with your Mt R. running back choices. John Brown and Cole Beasley might also have merited honorable mentions among the wide-outs. Lastly, great for spotting the greatness for our "other" DK tight end, Dawson Knox. I'm anticipating (another) great year for him this year. Go Bills.
Great segment. Hard to argue on your picks, but I'm with the Cookie Gilchrist camp. The era that he played in was a running back featured offense, and Cookie dominated in that era in all facets of the game. I would take him over Cribbs who was a great running back too. Maybe I'm being sentimental, but we oldtimers may see ut that way.
As an old timer, I was disappointed cookie gilchrist didn't make the cut. He was often compared to the great Jim Brown. Cookie, ran fast and angry. While I agree with oj, Thurman. Fred Jackson and Joe cribs were both solid backs, but not in the same league as Cookie
Understood... but he only played 3 seasons and his production doesn't really measure up. 12th all-time on for the Bills in rushing. Given my emphasis on impact relative to the Bills, I couldn't get him there. I'm aware of his talent but needed to see more impact for longer to make the cut for me.
Two things i remember as a kid watching the Bills 1 Joe Ferguson frustrating me with interceptions. He always hit them 8n the numbers, but they didnt always play for the Bills. 2 Cribbs draped with defenders still chugging down the field.
@@LockedOnBills one of the founding fathers, i remember watching a documentary about him when i first started watching football.. solidified my fandom. My Rushmore has been the Juice, Thurman, Cookie, and Freddie
Thank you so much, Joe! I’ve shared before I’m older than the Bills and was fully attuned by the ‘64 season to witness 3 straight AFL Title games, winning 2. I love talking about the Bills AFL journey!
Totally with you on the RBs - but should have stretched it to five and included Cookie. HOWEVER - with respect to RB nicknames, Mini Max Anderson and Earthquake Enyart deserve honorable mentions!
Metzelaars was one of a few Bills players that would come down to my HS when I was a kid and play a charity basketball game against the teachers. Everyone looked forward to it ever year. After the game he threw is wristband into the stands and I caught it. I was so excited!
@@mikep3813 Metz is a great guy. When the Bills did co training with the panthers in Spartanburg, SC, he came down and did an autograph signing. I got to shoot the sh*t with him and got his card signed by him that i had since the 80's. My favorite Bills experience to this day.
My first recollection of the Bills is Ernie Warlick's negotiating the 2 goal post (on the goal line) at the AFL championship. KNOX has to be on the list. Especially, seeing who the position has evolved.
Maybe it’s just me, but growing up in the 2000’s I loved those navy, dark blue jerseys and playing them on ESPN NFL 2K5 (superior to Madden) [this relates to the previous pod] But for the challenge of the TE Mt Rushmore, im not gonna sugar coat it, this is a HUGE stretch but, I’d say Scott Chandler, Charles Clay, Robert Royal and the BIGGEST one, Lee Smith
As far as TE, you should include Keith McKeller. His nickname was killer. He is whom the K-Gun is named after. Ask number 12x he will verify that. Killer’s career was derailed by a knee injury.
What about Frigg'n Lonnie Johnson? Name a tight end with more "doh" moments😂 Remember him pointing at the jumbotron and celebrating forgetting the opposing team had a deep safety. Was like he ran into a telephone pole.
Scary to think that kelly only played twn seasons for us. I know he didnt wanna come here and all that but allen is already on year 7. Just crazy to think if allen only had 3 more years
This maybe a herd mentality question- Who on the current Bills roster could have the career trajectory to knock off one of your Bills Mount Rushmore players?
Joe your wrong Josh Allen might be a better athlete than jim kelly but hell no he's not a more gifted QB your smoking something good. Kelly could run that offense read that offense better than Allen ever could Allen is a system QB he can't run his own and still can't. Kelly for sure
OH man. I think you have this very reversed. Kelly is more the system QB than Allen. Sometimes I wish Allen would do a better job running the system. And I had a choice to make on who to put on the cover of my book and I chose Kelly over Allen.
@LockedOnBills Kelly and Peyton manning were 1 in the same they ran that offense like a coordinator, kelly was calling his own plays not sure how old you are but I watched him growing up and josh allen needs them coordinators
I'm a Bills fan but I'll honestly never understand how people can just mainline this shit day in and day out I would shoot myself in the head after a week trying to devote the amount of time & attention joe does to this stuff

You’re so right on Fred Jackson, got me misty eyed listening to that.
He is maybe the most physically gifted QB ever. If he had Andy Reid it would be mahomes combined with Lamar IMO

I’d add honorable mentions: WR: James Lofton and TE: Bobby Chandler. Otherwise, good show and I loved thinking about Bills Greats past and present!

Love this.
A day late bc i was stuck at work yesterday!!

I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane.
This was great. Loved this podcast. Thanks Joe!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I met Ruben Brown at the mayor's office. What a moment for me. I was just coming to say hi to the mayor. And there he was....Go Bills.
I met Billy Shaw and Ernie warlick in person. Class guys!

Warlick was my Little League baseball coach! WR - Bobby Chandler and Jerry Butler are on my list. Agree with QB and RB.
Two things i remember as a kid watching the Bills 1 Joe Ferguson frustrating me with interceptions. He always hit them 8n the numbers, but they didnt always play for the Bills.
2 Cribbs draped with defenders still chugging down the field.
Gotta add Scott Chandler as an TE honorable mention for the snow shovel celebration alone
Joe, are you going to do a special trams segment for this MT. Rushmore? There are a number of guys that should have a ST acknowledgement I believe.
Can't believe Cookie got cut off
12th all-time for the team in rushing
@@LockedOnBills one of the founding fathers, i remember watching a documentary about him when i first started watching football.. solidified my fandom. My Rushmore has been the Juice, Thurman, Cookie, and Freddie
And will forever wonder what could have been if Marshawn Lynch never ran that lady over
Not enough time at task. I’ve followed them from the onset. Cookie was too goofy -quit on the team.
Thank you so much, Joe! I’ve shared before I’m older than the Bills and was fully attuned by the ‘64 season to witness 3 straight AFL Title games, winning 2. I love talking about the Bills AFL journey!

Such a fun podcast. I was sad to see that Jerry Butler and Bobby Chandler didn't receive some honorable mention at WR.
Honorable mention at RB jim Braxton
If you aren't doing a special teams segment, Steve Tasker has to be a WR hall of fame. Has to be
Thanks for mentioning Reggie Mck Joe. He carried OJ to the record season.
Metzelaars, Hull and Fina were my favorite Bills of the 80-90's. I was right there with you for the whole thing.

Building off this, I would be interested to see your all-time Bills starting lineup
I would have gone with Scott Chandler and Charles Clay for TE but your arguments for your opinion is valid.
I thought about Clay as an honorable mention
Paul Costa was in the running for rookie of the year, except there was a guy named Joe namath.
So fun!

You guys gotta check Joe's books. Go Bills
What about Frigg'n Lonnie Johnson?
Name a tight end with more "doh" moments😂
Remember him pointing at the jumbotron and celebrating forgetting the opposing team had a deep safety.

Scratch Lofton he was mostly Green Bay, maybe Jerry Butler
Scary to think that kelly only played twn seasons for us. I know he didnt wanna come here and all that but allen is already on year 7. Just crazy to think if allen only had 3 more years
I love this because I'm forced to pick four.
I picked five linemen.
Cookie Gilchrist is a must at the RB spot.
bob chandler was a great receiver
Damn, so many comments to make today. Paul Costa had a limited time as a TE before being converted to the OL.
😊the only honorable mentions I could think of are James Lofton and Paul Seymour. And of course the great Billy Joe Hobart, jk.
Good Morning Joe
I feel like Scott Chandler could be at least an honorable mention
Mike montler, and if you're going to mention K - Gun, keith mckeller
Don Beebe Honorable mention ?
This maybe a herd mentality question- Who on the current Bills roster could have the career trajectory to knock off one of your Bills Mount Rushmore players?
Anybody else think now would be a good time to bring back the K-Gun?
OJ!!!
Could we get worst st their postion all time offense and defense
No howard ballard?
I guess we are running out of topics during the dead part of the season.
LOL! I do almost 300 shows per year. We have room and there is always plenty to discuss.
U might not like him but Cook Will be there some day
😂 Poindexter
Jack the man Kemp...
I like Knox, but he shouldn't be on any Hall of Fame wall yet. Maybe Bills' TEs don't deserve 4 heads.
I put Henry over cribbs
I think Travis Henry was better that Fred Jackson
NOPE
No way
All the way out on that take
Jerry Butler was a better WR than Diggs
Joe your wrong Josh Allen might be a better athlete than jim kelly but hell no he's not a more gifted QB your smoking something good. Kelly could run that offense read that offense better than Allen ever could Allen is a system QB he can't run his own and still can't. Kelly for sure

Joe Ferguson was far too erratic. I'd take Frank Reich over him any day.
You forgot to mention that Jack Kemp was also a Vice Presidential candidate and long time member of Congress locally..
This podcast was about his football accomplishments
Good Morning Joe
