I'm like 99% sure symlink is way smarter than copying the entire game folder. Especially because there's a "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps" directory already inside Vortex's compatdata folder. If you just symlink the "common" directory from your actual steamapps folder, you get a C:\ file path for Nexus, and can also keep all your different games inside one folder and not have to do a ton of copying if you want to work on multiple games.

2 things I'd like to add to this video 1: instead of moving the folder pick the create link option instead. It works just as well 2: On steam deck if you don't have a m&kb plugged in there's no way to get the context menu to open to allow you to paste links in vortex Just open the keyboard & near the bottom right there's a paste button. So just in case anyone is as new as I am at navigating the steam deck, when you get to the part where you have to put quotes around the path in the ‘target’ field, to get the keyboard to pull up, just hit X. For some reason I’d got it in my head that I needed to hit the steam button and then X to open the keyboard, and was getting very frustrated when I was unsuccessful for an embarrassingly long time. Just hit X. That’s all. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the corner wearing a dunce cap. I’ll also be playing my newly modded save file for Baldur’s Gate 3, so at least there’s that.
Would you happen to know why when I get to the part to put the Game location in the drive C: folder, when I go to my steam library, and press options on my game, there is no shortcut option where the links are. I have general, and compatibility tab. But no target url or anything
Man this really helped me with my bannerlord mods thank you, I will be installing sim mods for my gfs deck. Appreciate this tutorial, it does take a lot of trial and error and patience but it all works if you just take your time. And I cannot stress enough that if you are on a steam deck first download all the mods and enable them when the game is on the c drive. Do not redownload the game like steam wants too, instead go in your c drive folder where your vortex lives and manually drag and drop your game back into your steam common library it will boot with everything you added, I know he mentioned it but it was a bit unclear and I thought you needed two copy’s and I’m sure people having an issue are doing the same thing I was. Happy modding.
@@lumopal6473 I installed the mods by opening vortex and dropping them from my browser download straight to the section that says downloads once the game was in the c drive folder of vortex. Also I enabled the DIII on steam deck it will ask permission to execute not the same security tab they show here. Also I found that if I just open the zip folder and find the actual mod I can drag that to my modules folder in my game and not have to use vortex. Vortex just helps make it simple and easy. @@SubZeroJez In the end I downloaded them manually and tried one by one to see which mod the game crashed for me, it was a very old one from bandit militia or something like that so I removed it and it was already working fine, you also have to look carefully at the loading order of the mods, there is some guide out there but they usually put the ones that make the most changes to the game like RBM as high as you can but below vanilla, you download them manually and extract them and paste them in the folder that says "modules", if you want To use vortex you need a keyboard to ctrl+v the mod link as done in the video but if you get used to doing it manually it is easy. Oh and look at the version of the mod, if it is very old, look for a newer similar one or change the version through the Steam beta to an older one.

This video is very well explained. I downloaded this on my steam deck before, but I couldn’t get Game on the manager, so I gave up and uninstalled the program, but if I can’t get mod to work this time, I’m not going to ever uninstall this program because it is difficult to get it to work again for me. You do a very good job on explaining stuff and your videos are very detailed. I appreciate that.
I figured out a way to use symlinks with this video! This way you don’t have to move the entire game folder and possibly mess up future game updates with Steam. You have to create two Symlink folders. The first folder goes to the game folder for managing(c root “Starfield”--> game root folder). The second folder goes to a completely empty mod folder(c root “Mods”-->(game root “Mods”, used for deployment and staging (created a mods folder within the root game folder) I was getting a “mods can’t be deployed”error before I did this and after I did this, the error completely went away.
thanks for sharing! as most my games are non-steam games, i can run them anywhere so i like to just move the game folder inside the vortex/wemod prefix folder i created so it can both be modded and run cheats at the same time.

I actually installed vortex on wemod prefix. And now all games are on wemod prefix folder so I can use wemod and vortex to manage them without transferring them around.

@GrownUpGamingGUG yes, and then I removed them like you had in the "start in" category below it as well as removed the .exe at the end of vortex and added the slash. I'm not really sure what's going on with it.

So I'm following this video as my guide to try and get Vortex working on my Deck currently, one thing I was alittle confused about was what to do exactly if youre using the steam version of a game. Any help is appreciated 👍

Mad helpful so far but at 5:45, the only thing that pops up for me is a screen that says game not discovered, you will have to set the game folder manually and the only option is to continue which pops up a select folder menu.
I'm trying to follow the guide but once I get to 4:51 when it's time to launch Vortex nothing happens, I start it, the loading icon appears and at that point it closes on its own. Any suggestions on what to do?
Any ideas for why i cant get it to work on windows? Before i had the non steam version i had it downloaded from xbox game pass. Do you think the data folders could be getting mixed up?
@GrownUpGamingGUG thats what is making this so difficult. It appears that everything is working. Vortex locates the folder and adds the mod files. But when i boot the game starui still isnt working.

Thanks for sharing! Happy gaming!
You installed the mods downloading manually or with vortex manager auto option? I can't see the mods installed in the mod section in the Launcher...
You probably haven’t gone into the folder and enabled diii, go to the bin folder and open the windows 64 folder and in their will be the diii, enable it but going to permissions and putting executable. I’ve got like 30+ bannerlord mods working this way.

Thanks for the comment 😊
I figured out a way to use symlinks with this video! This way you don’t have to move the entire game folder and possibly mess up future game updates with Steam. You have to create two Symlink folders. The first folder goes to the game folder for managing(c root “Starfield”--> game root folder). The second folder goes to a completely empty mod folder(c root “Mods”-->(game root “Mods”, used for deployment and staging (created a mods folder within the root game folder)
I was getting a “mods can’t be deployed”error before I did this and after I did this, the error completely went away.
thanks for sharing! as most my games are non-steam games, i can run them anywhere so i like to just move the game folder inside the vortex/wemod prefix folder i created so it can both be modded and run cheats at the same time.

Thanks so much for this! i will watch tomorrow. I really want to try the first person mod for bg3 on my steam deck, its on nexus. Should i do this before i do the bg3 mod manager guide you made?
ua-cam.com/video/prTSwXazPHg/v-deo.html for bg3 use this guide
Got everything to work until I’m actually in vortex searching for a game. My steam deck won’t register or type anything into the search bar. I don’t have a mouse and keyboard just the deck
hold the steam button and use right touchpad as mouse, R2 as left mouse click or you can try this ua-cam.com/video/JRSdBLOQWqI/v-deo.html
it does not want to download the window runtime for some reason.
You can manually install it with protontricks if you need to but it should work. Maybe change network settings.
I successfully installed vortex but mods in general aren’t working in any game.
Try it on smaller games, maybe even use the example I used in the video to make sure your setup it correct.
Why can I not see the target or start in for my games
I go to property’s and I don’t see shortcut
For steam games, use this ua-cam.com/video/IGHh_0Xxg8Q/v-deo.html
I tried to do this to get first person mode for the witcher 3 wild hunt...got incredibly confused and gave up
You really gave up? Was going to give you some pointers too 😂
I just panicked I think might try again!
4:35 I am not able to continue, when I enter the address the program does not open and I have already tried everything
What SteamOS and proton are you using?
@@GrownUpGamingGUG proton experimental But I've had it installed for a long time, I don't know if I have to update the protons, I don't even know if they are updated
@@GrownUpGamingGUG my steamos is 3.5.19
the 2889 folder is completely different, do I need to sort through every single numbered folder until I find the drive that has the thing
This might help you ua-cam.com/video/xCXJ8Xp12gg/v-deo.htmligr=GrownUpGaming
Has anyone used this method specifically for oblivion? It’s the only game I really care to mod on steam deck and want to check how well it works!
I haven't, you should try it
I finally managed to follow along with everything but the mods aren't reflected in the game. Vortex says they are enabled but it hasn't changed anything in the game.
What game? Do you have any errors in notifications?
@@GrownUpGamingGUG The game is my time at sandrock. I installed "your time at sandrock" and bepinex which most of the mods say they need then I installed "ytas lovers" and "ytas tweaks". Everything seems good to go because there are no error messages, but the mods are still not being reflected when playing the game, not on my PC and not on steamdeck. This is my first time trying to use mods. It's been time consuming and frustrating with nothing to even show for it.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG So... any ideas?
i can't get vortex to insteal. it asks what porgram you want to open it with
Did you try to install it with steam add non-steam game? You can also use lutris to run the installer program.
I tried it but u fortunately after installing Vortex and changing the path in steam, Vortex does not open
Did you put quotation marks at the front and end of the target path?
Welp im stuck at 5:20 refuses it freezes after i fixed it and when i open applications larger or shorter i get a black screen i must be doing something wrong
Some people mention their router or firewall blocked it from downloading that's why they can't install the .net when clicking the fix button.
I can't get it to work with Steam Games through Vortex. The system keeps telling me that there are no executable files in the game folder, or that it can't find one at least. There has to be one though, because the game works perfectly well. I'm trying to get it working with a legit copy of Marvel Mignight Suns.
You're watching the wrong video, try this ua-cam.com/video/IGHh_0Xxg8Q/v-deo.html
Didn't come up with "Black Tree" I don't know why.
It didn't install, maybe try using a different proton.
@@GrownUpGamingGUGI hate how there so little information on this, Your video on this is the most insightful I've found.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG For Reference, Could you walk me though what I need to do to Use the different Proton?
As much Context as possible, Sadly I'm not that intelligent.
@@DURANDAL1717 in the game properties on steam, under compatibility you selected a proton version right? Try out different proton versions to see if they work.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG ..Ah, Thought it would be that simple, I'll go though some test runs in the morning and get back to you if I get to a standstill.
*Sorry if this came in at a late time. And thank you for your help.
It doesnt work the same for newvegas or fallout 3 for some reason.
I replied your comment in the steam version video. Hope you get it working 😄
@@GrownUpGamingGUG yeah I appreciate that haha I didn't realize this one was for non steam games till after I sent this one, so I watched the other video instead haha
С проблемами, но я сумел поставить моды. Благодарю, без тебя эта миссия была бы невыполнимой.
Glad you worked it out 😁
What about doing a video for the Frosty mod manager? I understand there is a linux fix out there but it may be only for a certain version of Frosty. I would like to mod Need for speed heat and unbound on my steam deck when I get it but there is not much info out there for it.
I'll try, no promises.
I'm having a bit of an issue luckily it seems to be an easy fix. When I hit the fix button to download .Net 6 it said
Downloads Folder Invalid
your downloads folder "C:\users\steamuser\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\donloads" is not marked correctly. This may be ok if you've updated from a very old version of Vortex and you can ignore this.
However, if you use a removable medium (network or USB drive) and that path does not actually point to your real Vortex download folder, you have to make sure the actual folder is available and tell Vortex where it is.
i've not seen that. ;did you fix it?
@@GrownUpGamingGUG I hit ignore and it seems to be fine so far. Unfortunately the game I was looking to mod doesn't have Vortex support :/ So I can't completely confirm.
i don't suggest just ignoring it. you can actually download the installer of .net 6 on the internet and you protontricks to install it on the prefix of vortex.
My steam keeps crashing when i get to the URL part, and I can't get any further
Don't use the web browser in vortex. Download the mods in the steam deck browser and drag the zip to the mods section in vortex.
I am attempting to follow your guide for my new OLED Steam Deck, but when it comes to the part where I need to guide Vortex to the directory Skyrim is located in I am running into an issue.
When I click on compatibilities a completely different menu pops up from what is shown in your video, when I click browse files I find it, but Vortex does not like the given link.
For steam games follow this guide ua-cam.com/video/IGHh_0Xxg8Q/v-deo.html
when i use vortex the find any game, i click on home, deck, steamapps. and then nothing. blank. why wont vortex see any of the games i have in the steam games folder? its becoming upsetting. its just not finding anything. just blank. ive put vortex into the same folder. nothing. why?!?!?!?!
put it inside drive_c of the vortex prefix. then you can find it in my computer/c:/
8:04 so im doing skyrim and when i go to properties it doesnt the the shortcut tab
ua-cam.com/video/IGHh_0Xxg8Q/v-deo.html for steam version games use this
This is the perfect video on why you should buy a rog Ally instead of a steam deck if you like modding. None of this works, and to get it working is a complete ballache.
Some people are stuck with just the steam deck. You gotta make the best out of what you got.
After installing Vortex in the browser what do you do?
@@anunez1979able start modding?
They have vortex cyberpunk2077 support.. how does that work?
ua-cam.com/video/JBgz2NCnXyY/v-deo.htmligr=GrownUpGaming I've used vortex to mod cyberpunk last year
Why does my steam deck desktop have Exclamation mark on the files inside the Black tree folder. It wants me to specify what to do with (.exe / .bin / .dll / .dat) files
I don't have that. But what files do you need to run?
