To my knowledge, this is the only fully translated video interview in the world with the legend that is Yuki Nakai.
Yuki Nakai fought Rickson Gracie in Vale Tudo Japan, was instrumental in popularising BJJ in Japan, and has guided some of Japan's top fighters, including Shinya Aoki.
We visited the headquarters of Paraestra, Nakai-san's network of dojos, in a small suburb of Tokyo. This is the place where the best jiu jitsu fighters in Tokyo come to practice (hence all the noise in the background while we were filming.)
In this interview, we talked about history, philosophy, and Nakai-san set the record straight about how and why he started BJJ - and it didn't happen how most of us assume!
I hope you enjoy, please do visit and buy gear from Manto and Scramble, and proceeds will go to the next lot of interviews.

He's sooo humble and he doesn't realize that his silence about his injury for the good of the sport is one of the most commendable things ever done for martial sports. This man is a legend.

You don't have any major achievements?! Yuki u have tons:
Ok first of all u won the shoot welterweight champion in 1994.
Then you made it to the finals of the Vale tudo tournament. Now get this he fought 3 times in one night in his first fight his opponent was Gerard, a 6 foot 6 guy who was 110kg. So he was a foot and 50kg bigger than Yuki. Now the story of this is Gerard eye gouched him so much that he permanently became blind in the right eye. And he still manage to win by submission!!! And then he fought a fighter who was 15cm taller and 50kg heavier and still won all the while getting punched in the eye which had been severly poked!!! #MAd respect and what makes it even better was that is th e rle he plays in the MMA today of Japan Yuki Nakai went on to create his own BJJ gym. There he has brought to light some of the best Japanese born BJJ fighters the world has seen. His much coveted techniques have been out on display in some of the world’s best competitions, with fighters like Yukinori Sasa, Kazuya Satoh, Yusuke Honma, Yoshihiko Matsumoto, Arabe Kenji amongst many others and including MMA superstar Shinya Aoki. Aoki was at one point one of the main figures of the gym and one of it’s assistant instructors. Unfortunately his “bad boy” antics on the ring, namely his less then amicable attitude towards a fellow competitor (Mizuto Hirota) “flipping him off” after breaking his arm on a match, took Yuki Nakai to publicly apologise and take Aoki off the assistant instructor roster.

Yes, it reminds me of my Sensei. I came from a Taekwondo background for 6 years before coming to him for MMA. As I was trying to "empty my cup" and learn only the proper technique for proper kickboxing stance and grappling techniques, I would show a little frustration in adapting to some of the movements and asked him if it's okay to sometimes use a TKD technique when I saw an opportunity.
He told me (and I am paraphrasing),"I don't care what you do, so long as it works! You can't fight like me or some other guy, you fight like you! I'm only teaching what I know and what I've come to experience. How you interpret and use that is up to you!"
After I learned to accept my past training and just do what feels natural while still experimenting with what works, I have become so much more successful in my training and competition. If it works for you, do it!

I just knew him of the Choke documentary and I didnt think much of him, just that he lost and that he could have used another submission. But after hearing this guy speak I am totally amazed and feel stupid for not researching about him earlier. I always thought that Enson was the true representative of Yamato Damashii but this guy def. holds the crown. When I go to japan I had the plan to visit Jiro or at least his younger son and eat at their restaurant; I now added the plan to also visit Yuki Nakais gym and roll with them. Great words, thank you.
