I had that one plus an even earlier open-world 3D racing game, Vette by Spectrum Holobyte (1989). I also had Test Drive II: The Duel although the only 3D element in that game was the road. Everything else was sprite-based (which was fine since it was still the 1980s when that game came out).
For me the first racing games ive played were the Driver and Gran Turismo 2 on PS1. Ive played Test Drive 2 : The Duel on MS-DOS as well but that was later on.
To be fair, this game has a fairly sophisticated 3D graphics engine by GBA standards. A lot of GBA racing games had simpler forms of graphics like scaling and mode 7 or just old fashioned raster graphics for the road and multiple-sized sprites for the cars. Or they just did overhead view like Micromachines. I'm not 100% sure what the first racing game I played was but it may have been a port of Pole Position (no idea which console but I remember it having slightly more sophisticated graphics than the Atari 2600 version) that I played for a minute or two at a elementary school bake sale circa 1984. We had a Commodore Vic-20 at home but I don't think we had any racing games for it. The first racing games I owned were Hang On and Enduro Racer for the Sega Master System (got both Christmas 1987) followed by Outrun for my 14th birthday in October 1988 and my first PC racing game was Test Drive II: The Duel, which I got a year later for my 15th birthday.
First racing game I played was Lotus on a friends Amiga 😂 It was awesome tho. Had to stop for fuel and stuff. Beautiful graphics back in the day. Lovely colors!
My first game was Colin McRae Rally on the PS1, but I've always been curious about Corvette on the PS2. I only remember that the PS magazine rated it at something like a 3/10
I bought the PS2 Corvette game a few years ago from a thrift store. It's a very no-frills kind of game (don't expect a game with the depth of Gran Turismo) but the plus side is that it has pretty much every single model year of Corvette from 1953 to 2003 plus a few special editions and racetrack variants so, if you have a favourite model year of Corvette (up to 2003), it's in the game. It doesn''t have one of my favorites, the 1976 Greenwood Corvette, though. presumably because Greenwood is an outside license. There's also an unrelated PS2 game called Corvette GT Evolution, which is a repackaging of European game that's multilicense and which only has one or two Corvettes. They just added "Corvette" to the title in North America because, I guess, they thought Americans really like Corvettes? That game's very mid-tier but it had an innovative live (single-player) race rewind feature a few years before Forza Motorsports added it for 4.
@@SteveBrandon I might have to pick it up, as well as a few other similar games as this "type" of racing game really intrigues me. I'm sure nothing will beat Porsche Unleashed, but still it looks to be at least on the level of Ford Racing
@@MuscleCarLover My brother had one of those similarly bare-bones Ford Racing PS2 games, maybe it was even the Mustang-specific one, where it was just a budget arcade-style racer but he still liked it because he was able to drive, in a video game, the Mustang that he owned (for a couple of years) in real life, from a model year (2002?) and with an options package that wasn't represented in Gran Turismo, Project Gotham Racing, or Forza Motorsports. My brother also liked Porsche Unleashed on PC, which I've never played but I have the Playstation version, which is supposed to be quite different from the PC game.

I forgot about this. I remember playing this as a kid childhood memories the Ps2 version was as close to the PC. I’ll have to get a copy again.

The first racing game I ever played was Asphalt 8: Airborne. Definitely one of the greatest arcade racers of all time, even though it was on mobile.
