  • How to polish rocks by hand tools is demonstrated here in this video. We take two pieces of petrified wood and use a wet polisher to do the lapidary grinding and polishing of these agate style woods. I start with a rough grinder to get surface flat then use diamond pads starting at 30 grid all the way to 13,000 grid to polish a beautiful rock. My name is Daniel Miller and I love rocks. Follow me on my journey was we discover the beauty that lays within this petrified wood rough.
    I used a MK 1503 wet polisher kit approx $650.
    work bench purchased at Harbor Freight for under $30
    Rough Petrified wood purchased from Jim Gray's Petrified Wood in Holbrook, Arizona and at the front store at the Petrified forest
    national park.

    Excellent video!! I learned a great deal. I've noticed on ebay there are kits to make your grinder a wet grinder. I guess it would work if you could find a grinder that is spinning less than 5000 RPM.

    Hi Daniel, I just wanted to ask if you're using any kind of polishing compound or just purely sanding to the desired finish? I have some fluorite towers I purchased that are in pretty rough shape and I'm trying to get a nice smooth finish on them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

      Thank you for watching. I just used the polishing pads I take it up through 13,000 Grit. and I get that beautiful shine. You could use a 50,000 grit diamond paste with buffing pad if you wanted but then you would have to clean out the pits and volgs .

    So the time you polish with each different grit pad is dependent on when the marker lines are gone? How long do the pads last and how can you tell when you need new ones?

    • @DanielMillerlife
      @DanielMillerlife  6 років тому

      I am told the pads can last for a year to many years. I have used this methods of polishing for about 3 months. I used a flat 12 inch disc and a drum sander for about 15 years, the belts I used on those lasted anywhere from a couple of days to a week. the 12 inch disc would last one to two years. I think these pads will last me one to two years unless you rip one on a sharp corner like I did. but I bought a set for $50 ( grit 50,150, 300,500,1000, 2000, 3000) they had double disc on the lower grit. I also purchased a disc from the manufacture of my orginal pads that were about $40 per pad. The Set of pads for $50 is working great
