- How to polish rocks by hand tools is demonstrated here in this video. We take two pieces of petrified wood and use a wet polisher to do the lapidary grinding and polishing of these agate style woods. I start with a rough grinder to get surface flat then use diamond pads starting at 30 grid all the way to 13,000 grid to polish a beautiful rock. My name is Daniel Miller and I love rocks. Follow me on my journey was we discover the beauty that lays within this petrified wood rough.
I used a MK 1503 wet polisher kit approx $650.
work bench purchased at Harbor Freight for under $30
Rough Petrified wood purchased from Jim Gray's Petrified Wood in Holbrook, Arizona and at the front store at the Petrified forest
national park.

Thank you, dear Daniel Miller, for the interesting videos, and I wish you good luck in the future. Sorry, I do not speak English, I resort to the help of a computer translator.
Thank you for watching. It is amazing that today we can view from all over the world.
Absolutely incredible I have carved and polished wood in the past the process seems similar.
Learning a great sea from you Daniel. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work!! Liked, subscribed and left a comment!! Yay!! 😊 PS: Great music too. Give us MORE!! ❤️
Hi There. first of all, thank you for the video. Just wondering what RPM's do you run the wet polisher at throughout the whole process. Many thanks in anticipation.
You are a Genius! Thank You! Subscribed!
Wish I was a Genius, Thank you for watching and Subscribing.😇😇
Where can you get a wet grinder like that? Looks like the wet part is an add on ? Very cool and I want one
Here is a link to Amazon for one. amzn.to/3cOeKNp
Thank you for watching. Keep on Rocking!
Oh. What tool is that and is that a kit u can buy for the sanding papers?? Sorry I am new to this part I can't wait to do this to my finds.. thanks for sharing nevermore I see u have it in the description.. 😆
Thank you for watching. Take your time make sure you complete each level of sanding and polishing. You will learn if you end up with scratches and have to go backwards. But it is satisfying when you complete.
Nice vídeo Daniel and great tips! Thank you! Can you tell me please were can i get 13000 polish pad, the maximum i get is 10000 but it doesn't work very wel, i get best results with 6000! ✌
www.mkdiamond.com/lapidary/pol_disc_resin.html Try that site for the 13k Pads
@@DanielMillerlife in this site black puff is 8500 and there is white puff wich i don't know what is exactly. Anyway Thank you very fast for your fast answer, you are very professional continue showing us more videos👍👍👍
Thanks for your video, did you use Muratic acid first to remove the white scale? I was able to get some nice pieces at the DoBell Ranch near the Petrified Forest National Park last month.
Thank you for watching, No I did not use any acid on this rocks. Send me a pic if you get your's polished. Would love to see them.
What does acid do for the rocks? Very curious.
I found a 1.3 metre long branch of opalised wood, it's quite fragile and breaks easily, what would you recommend I do with it? I'd love to polish the broken edges
Try using a drum sander or use water and sandpaper and do it by hands. That would be my recommendation.
Excellent video!! I learned a great deal. I've noticed on ebay there are kits to make your grinder a wet grinder. I guess it would work if you could find a grinder that is spinning less than 5000 RPM.
Thank you for watching. Let me know if you get one of those kits and if it works.
Hi Daniel, I just wanted to ask if you're using any kind of polishing compound or just purely sanding to the desired finish? I have some fluorite towers I purchased that are in pretty rough shape and I'm trying to get a nice smooth finish on them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for watching. I just used the polishing pads I take it up through 13,000 Grit. and I get that beautiful shine. You could use a 50,000 grit diamond paste with buffing pad if you wanted but then you would have to clean out the pits and volgs .
@@DanielMillerlife Thank you for the info. I've been looking all over town and the highest grit I've been able to find is only 3,000. Did you have to order yours online?
here on Amazon up to 10,000 grit set check it out here is the link: amzn.to/2Pd2rzB
Where do you buy the higher grit sanding pads? the highest I can find is 10,000. Thanks
I have a link to Amazon in the comments. Thanks for watching. Have fun.
I made it with Stodoys plans!
Ty for watching
@@DanielMillerlife ❤️❤️❤️
How come you only do 2 sides? I found a couple 100+ lb pieces and excited to get them polished! Will this technique work for all styles of petrified wood? Thanks!
Not sure for them, but there is a lot of character, and sometimes the outer surface of the wood is apparent on the outside of a chunk of petrified
Why are you wearing a respirator when you're wet sanding? Is there a reason for that?
I have allergies and I was outside. I was trying to cut down
on some of the dust and pollen here in west Texas. Thank
you for asking. Also Thank you for watching.
@@DanielMillerlife you're welcome, I was just thinking that maybe I was missing something, and I might supposed to be wearing one.
Is it possible to use any angle grinder with a fish tank pump for your water or is there a cheaper way I'm on a budget
That is a good idea, if you do not have water hose I am sure you could cut lines and splice them together. maybe get a fitting from hardware store to tie in to the angle grinder and splice into that. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Very nice work. Thanks for the demo.
You could easily and quickly experience the disapointment of electrocution with the arrangement you're using. At least put on some shoes !
Thanks for the tips!
Hello how long do you change the different grids
I use a marker each time.
When those marks are gone
it is time to change to the next grit.
Thank you for asking ... Keep on Rocking.
@@DanielMillerlife Thanks! Is this a permanent marker?
@@nikolaysantev3648 yes, if there is a deep crack that you are not going to sand out make sure u not mark into the crack. It just takes a little practice. You can use this technique on cabochons too
@@DanielMillerlife Thank you very much !
Brilliant finish.how long did it take 2 polish this .? subscribed❤️👍
It will take about 1 hour to 2 hours. Depends on if you get any chipping. Thanks for watching. Keep on Rocking.
Awesome!!!!
Amal Chevalier you looking so sexy
Did you modify the grinder like that so the water sprays out.... if so that's really cool and a good idea...
YOu buy the grinder that way. It shoots out the middle of the shaft on to your rock as you are polishing. Here is a link to purchase one on amazon ... amzn.to/2XJeI0M
Get it class?
So the time you polish with each different grit pad is dependent on when the marker lines are gone? How long do the pads last and how can you tell when you need new ones?
I am told the pads can last for a year to many years. I have used this methods of polishing for about 3 months. I used a flat 12 inch disc and a drum sander for about 15 years, the belts I used on those lasted anywhere from a couple of days to a week. the 12 inch disc would last one to two years. I think these pads will last me one to two years unless you rip one on a sharp corner like I did. but I bought a set for $50 ( grit 50,150, 300,500,1000, 2000, 3000) they had double disc on the lower grit. I also purchased a disc from the manufacture of my orginal pads that were about $40 per pad. The Set of pads for $50 is working great
Thanks for the info, where's the best place to get a 10,000 or 13,000 grit pad. No kits on amazon don't come with either of those two pads.
How much can you make after polishing a piece like this?
From $30 to $80
@@DanielMillerlife awesome ! I think I got a good sized petrified wood? For my first find..
Wow! I want to send u a pic of my rock .how do I send it?
Put on your youtube channel then I can see it.

thank you for watching
I found recommendation seller of petrified wood from Indonesian. Search him on instagram petrifiedwood.production
Thank you for watching I will look him up on Instagram.
OK...standing in water and using a power tool? Isn't that a bit like tempting fate?
He is using a wet sander purpose built for the job. Make sure the plug is not sitting in water though
