0:46 That is a "shakulute", which is basically a Western concert flute with its headjoint (blowing end) replaced with a bamboo one similar to a Japanese shakuhachi (an end-blown bamboo flute). This gives the flute the same scale and timbre as a concert flute, but enables the player to use specialized blowing techniques (bends, vibrato, etc) unique to shakuhachi. 2:07 That is a suona (唢呐), a traditional Chinese double-reed instrument (oboe and bassoon are also double-reed instruments) descended from the Persian sorna. It is often used in weddings, funerals, festivals and traditional music ensembles, and has a distinct penetrating loud sound. 2:41 That is a contrabass flute, a member of the Western flute family and is two octaves lower than a standard concert flute. The largest member of the flute family in existence is the hyperbass flute, which is almost twice as tall as its player and plays four octaves lower than the concert flute.
@ Minor corrections: Pedro himself actually released clips of him playing the instruments used in TGA on his Instagram earlier, and the first one I mentioned above isn’t a shakulute but instead appears to be a custom attachment handmade by him, which combines a Nigerian ọjà (traditional flute) and a concert flute headjoint. He also reveals that the small instrument he plays briefly alongside the contrabass flute near the end is an Armenian shvi, a small fipple flute.
Aside from being somewhat familiar with the game, and unfortunately not so much with the music, I did do a little shout out to the keytar! I've actually been wanting to get that exact keytar for years now, the Roland AX-Edge!
Suona is the Chinese adaption of Persian Surna, imported 1700+ years ago. The shape and sound and the music are quite different from the origin. There are other versions too, such as Serunai from Malaysia, made from wood.
Suona is very difficult to play, the flute guy is just on par, not great in any measure. A real master of suona will outstand this only instrument, even with an orchestra: suona will be the only sound you would hear.
Interesting! I don't know anything about the instrument itself, personally, so this is just based on what I'm hearing in this performance. I definitely hear it standing out, but I also think he did a good enough job being able to blend in with the orchestra as well!
Dude the start of elden ring sote part sounds so similar to the house stark theme from game of thrones, funny thing is Jeorge R.R Martin the author of GoT also made the lore to elden ring so i mean, is it a coincidence that it sounds familiar, probably yeah

Thank you for the instrument descriptions! I have not heard of the first two, and am interested to learn more about them!

How can you be musicians and not comment on the synths on Balatro 😭😭
I feel you need to be familiar with the game to understand

"WHAT IS THAT?!?" "I DON'T KNOWWWW!" literally my brain when I first saw this. I'd say this performance is the most pure thing that happened in 2024.
The greatest yaoguai and the title theme, have some kind of trompet or flute, what is it?
Now a legend shows up playing it, what a way to learn
