Here’s a tangent for you from the psychological side; IBS diagnosis and high cortisol levels have been identified in children who have been emotionally and physically abused. Doctors have identified that gut bacteria is of course affected by chronic stress. We typically carry the emotional baggage from our childhood into our adult lives. We act like it’s the past, but the stress we’ve been under for a long time, continues...If you have these conditions from a challenged childhood, it’s important to understand you can solve it through diet AND with the support of a psychologist or other therapist. In those cases you have to take a multi disciplinary approach. I know because this was my experience in childhood and I will tell you that eating Keto and doing IF are the icing on the cake when you take care of your psyche too! I’m proof that therapy and healthy diet can change your life.

Dr. Matthew Nuesse D.C. CME - OK - “leaky gut” - does this occur in everyone on some level? How does one know if you have this condition? And lastly, belly fat - that is my challenge as I have gotten older. I stopped snacking between meals, I don’t sleep through the night as I have to use the restroom during the sleeping hours. That said, I typically can go back to bed and to sleep after the restroom break. Now I do enjoy my wine in the evening and this may be my downfall. I need to lose the gut/belly fat. How can that be achieved easily without liposuction surgery? Thanks.

@@steveh.3901 Think of it like the difference between a balloon and a mesh bag. The balloon is not impermeable (will leak air) but will not allow objects to pass through. The mesh bag will hold larger objects but pass smaller ones. If the gut wall is leaking bacteria an food stuffs into the bloodstream directly a host of chronic conditions can occur. Unfortunately this is often a condition that is treated after other treatments fail.

I just took a high-level class with Special Operations on fighting fatigue. It all comes down to quality sleep and sufficient sleep. There were no drugs, no tricks, no gimmicks etc that have proven to work in a military environment to reduce fatigue. The only thing that works to reduce fatigue is sleep. There are a lot of good videos and blogs out there on increasing quality of sleep.
Think about this: how has sleep survived through evolution: it leaves us vulerable, it has an opportunity cost, it's requires peace, safety, and quiet..... i.e. we are giving up a lot to get sleep. But, we still need to do it.... Therefor, the body must really really really value sleep.
Sleep has some functions that are similar to fasting -- the body begins to clean itself during sleep.

I had a tumour on my one of my adrenal glands, it was an active tumour and malignant (7 cm), which means that it produces hormones. Normal cortisol levels are 30-180, mine was 6900! I had that for at least 6 months, luckily they caught it when i was in for a kidney stone and had a CT scan done. I was diagnosed with Adrenocortical Carcinoma, quite rare! Im on hydrocortisone now, 25 mg a day, hoping that my other adrenal gland will start producing cortisol , right now its dormant since the tumour produces so much., and later Mitotane, a chemotherapy drug. Its incredibly hard to loose weight. I had Cushings syndrom, where the excess cortisol converts your muscle protein to glucose and then fat and stores it around your abdomen and face, you get the so called moon face, but skinny arms and legs. I ballooned in weight, went from 175 lbs to 250 lbs in about 4-5 months. Ravenous appetite. Its VERY hard to loose weight now, Im on a low carb diet (under 20g a day, all from vegetables) 1000-1200 kcal a day, a 30 min walk, and ive plateaued at 210 lbs, been there for 17 days now. I eat 2mad, 5-600 kcal a meal, and a protein intake of 75-85 g of protein a day. I was thinking I should lower my fat intake and up my protein intake, since Im guessing the cortisol is storing the fat immediately, and if i ate more protein, at least there would be some energy expenditure when converting to fat? Its incredibly frustrating to plateau, as Im sure you all know!

I love most of the contend, however I will bring up a point in terms of meal prequency. Since many people struggle with unstable blood sugars, going hypoglycemic on a daily basis (even some Keto dieters) when meals are spaced too far in between, I'd argue that these people who have this tendency, would benefit of more frequent and smaller meals. Thereby we also decrease cortisol since we don't stress our system with those blood sugar drops.

Thomas! Make a video about prolonged keto flu from the beginning of a keto transition. As i came into keto 8 weeks ago i actually added dairy to my diet daily thinking id slow down later but i liked it. It seemed to work for the first couple of weeks i passed the flu but then it went down hill and i just assumed it was apart of adaptation. I was getting gas all the time, smelly and uncomfortable. Well one night my turkish neighbor brought over homemade yogurt after dinner last weekend so needless to say i ate a good amount. Then later that night i was getting alot of gas and i wss reading a keto book that talked about dairy and it just clicked. It took a day and the gas calmed down... now its practically gone... my ketosis is feeling stronger andnmy energy is going through the rough. My electrolytes are sustaining, my low energy gone and my urgent urination gone. But ive seen NOTHING on this subject. NOTHING

Once in a while I check the studies Thomas posts. Well, about the magnesium:
It is tested on mice. Also, it could be an association. When in stress, your body (mice) use more magnesium, therefore deficient. They used anti-depressants and diazepam by the way. Not a dose dependant controlled study on magnesium, let alone on humans....... and then make a video about it for millions of people.

''Overall, the present findings demonstrate the robustness and validity of the Mg(2+) deficiency model as a mouse model of enhanced anxiety, showing sensitivity to treatment with anxiolytics and antidepressants. It is further suggested that dysregulations in the HPA axis may contribute to the hyper-emotionality in response to dietary induced hypomagnesaemia. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled 'Anxiety and Depression'.''

About the ''gluten'': only thing that can be said from that study is this: ''IBS is characterized by an overactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and a proinflammatory cytokine increase.''. Nothing about gluten.

About the protein: it is about Leucine DEPRIVATION, in mice. Conclusion: ''Our hypothesis that CNS leucine plays a role in regulating fat loss under leucine deprivation was confirmed by the observation that icv administration of leucine significantly attenuates fat loss and body weight reduction in leucine-deprived mice''.
So where do you recommend the amount of protein (leucine in this case) we need? So you jump to the conclusion: ''Get as much protein as possible''?

I started due to slightly high LDL cholesterol and after four months of getting blood work my LDL has increased significantly, along with my blood pressure. Other then that, I have lost about 10lbs, and honestly like it. Help please.

Slow digesting carbs work best, but quick digesting carbs are good too. Just don't use fructose or carbs that aren't absorbed by the muscles (as fructose, sucrose, corn sirup, maltodextrine, resistant starches, fibers...).

First it's fasting. Then it's intermittent fasting. Then it goes to eat several times throughout the day to keep your metabolism going. Then he says don't do that now go long stretches between meals. I am finding this very confusing. Beyond that I thought that if you go long periods between meals you drop your blood sugar then when you eat it you spike your blood sugar and because you went from a fasted state to having food now you're going to store those calories. Not to mention if you are already overweight then you might have blood sugar issues. Why would I then once you go a long time between meals?
