The first video I ever saw on square filing was a colab with Jed Walters and Jacob! It was such a lovely video with Jacob randomly saying I love you Jed to which Jed replied I love you too man! RIP Jed you were a true friend to all and a Jedi inspiration for the generations of woodsman to come.

My wife and I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and we have a wood burner. We've been married for 17 years, and about 15 years ago she bought me a poulan pro 35 cc in hope that I would cut firewood, gave it a try , and needless to say I have been buying wood untill last year. RIP. Prayers for Jed. I'm 71. I spend a couple hundred hours a year running a saw cutting firewood and a couple of thousand doing carpentry. That's full time I can't think of anything better than shutting down the chainsaw for a few to look at animal tracks and listening to life in the forest. I think that Jed would probably agree. You only go around once Savor each moment.
I always loved the woods and mountains, as a child of four I remember vividly the beautiful sight of a carpet of bluebells, as far as the eye could see. This was in the ancient woodlands where I lived in South Wales, UK. On top of the mountain my friends and I would watch the skylarks singing their hearts out, whilst soaring high in the sky. We would walk back down through the oak, elm, ash, beech, silver birch, hawthorn and many other deciduous trees, that surrounded the area where we lived. I really enjoy your video’s, many thanks! You need some “Stihl PS series” 3/8 lo-pro. It’s equivalent to the Stihl RS and the Oregon 70 series. The time that “I” spent in a Stihl catalog showed my unbelieving Stihl dealer that the chain WAS a current/good line of chain. He was kinda mad when I asked him to get me some from the distributor, but he got it. THEN he was in disbelief “even when he saw it”! REALLY!!!! Some folks…things that make you go “hmmmmm”. 😉

Not to “pile on” but your comment on -it’s the filling no matter how big the saw. I run both hand falling and mechanical harvester. It’s the filling. You can have 200 hp behind the chain. It still needs to be sharpened correctly.

When you talk about reflecting on times past when you reach 50, just wait until you are in your mid 60s plus, and you have crested the hill and are starting to see the downhill side!
No shame in using that guide. I use it. Works great on their chain. Get them sharp and helps keen the edge up in between jobs. It just saves time and there is nothing wrong with that man.
I've got an alaskan mill on my backup saw. Used to have the mill on an old stihl ms180 with a rip chain. Found the rip chain wasn't really faster than crosscut for ripping boards. Made the board surface a bit cleaner, but that's about it. Don't need pretty, just functional aka econo boards. So I just kept the crosscut chain on the saw that replaced the stihl when it died. This way, if my primary (MS261) dies (yeah right) then I can just pull the mill off the backup saw and can crosscut right away.
Good lord you mill with a 261?! My most immense respect. I use an 066 and still find it painfully slow. And you’re correct: all a milling chain does is blunt the side cutter so that it more smoothly passes across your finished surfaces, while the top plate does all the cutting.
@@andrecharlebois705 Even when I’m milling a tiny little 12” log I still want that big powerhead. :):):) Call me impatient: I don’t want to spend 10 minutes on a pass if I can get it done in 2. Like your channel, have tried the square file method and I like it, have you ever talked about hardness of chain cutters and files, my files don’t remove much so am have a hard time creating the square profile.
Seeing you testing the Top Handle with a bit of tree on a stump, Makes me jealous. haha. Where i am from, In the UK. It is illegal to operate a Top Handle chainsaw whilst standing on the ground!!! Also, Dealers wont sell you a Top Handle unless you have proof that you are a tree surgeon / Arborist.. I have a Top handle.. But still.. Strange to me, seeing someone standing on the ground using one haha
The square grid was actually invented when buckin forgot his round file and only had a flat file ....😁as you can see from this video his resource fullness using a stick to tighten the chain when there was no scrench available

Buckin I don't know if you ever mentioned about the actual bar cutting length am sure you did sometime over the years but thought I would remind the people that dont know on any length bar you must subtract a minimal of 2" of the length of the bar do to the dawgs length your cutting length is from the dawgs to the tip of bar and depending on what size dawgs your running the cutting depths might be even shorter then 2 " so a 16" bar is only cutting 14" 32" is 30" or less just thought I would remind people carry on captain

Hey bud got a question for ya. I just bought a house with a fireplace. Never had one before. Not wanting to buy firewood just yet. Have you ever used a fiskar splitting axe and if so would you recommend it? If not what would be a good splitter to jist keep enough wood around for a normal fireplace that's not used to heat the entire house. Thanks for the feed back
Just tossing in a hearty second to Justin Santapole. The Fiskars splitting axe is the bomb! I've used one for several years now, splitting six to eight cords a year. Get the long (36") handled version.
Someone please tell me. Is the mcculloch 1-52 a good saw? Ever since I started watching Billy's videos I started wanting an old mcculloch power saw. I came across this 1-52 and bought it but think it needs a carb rebuild since it doesn't idle well. When I start it the idle slowly keeps creeping up higher and higher. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Be warned climber friends. You square file and run chisel chain on your climb saw you will be patching your pants. Mine ate up my pants swinging around on my saddle. I did cut fast.

Those Timbersport bars are sweet looking. It almost looks like one of the lines match up for the 45 degree down angle for the square file.
Cool small saw and with a square chain even. I just purchased another square chain for my 372. I just need to get better at sharpening it.

I don’t file enough to ditch the gadgets, I use the roller guide by Husqvarna and that helps keep my cuts consistent.

@@MemphisMechanic no I mill with a champion 40 cc; does ok; the 261 is for felling and bucking.

Regarding the use of those double bevel files. If you can't file both up and down, you are only using half the filing edges available. Jeff Thompson.

I have all the power tool equipment trucking experience and just in the last month I learned to actually file good cuz kf this and same with my axe also rebuilt my first saw. I wanted to custom build my own axe and was wondering where a good place tk syatt is

I should really try square filing ive never did nothn but round file. I ground my 1st ever chain for my sp81 at Smittys event a few week's ago. I think ima get 1 an give ground chain a go.

is square filing usually only done for ripping planks off of logs? I have never thought to use it for limbing?

When sharpening my chains and I need to tighten the chain before filing I will use a wedge and shove it under the bar, between it and the chain.
Can't wait for the round file tutorial big oak today hit a nail and everything is laying in the mud stocking up for the bullet!!!!
What sized files do you use for 3/8lp, .325, and 3/8 chain? Round files that is.

Buckin I don't know if you ever mentioned about the actual bar cutting length am sure you did sometime over the years but thought I would remind the people that dont know on any length bar you must subtract a minimal of 2" of the length of the bar do to the dawgs length your cutting length is from the dawgs to the tip of bar and depending on what size dawgs your running the cutting depths might be even shorter then 2 " so a 16" bar is only cutting 14"
32" is 30" or less just thought I would remind people carry on captain

Hi Billy, glad to see the arm's better and Ya feeling more yourself... Had Ya given any thought to training the left hand and arm to be better as the right hand is? I switched hands back in '79 where I trained my left hand and arm to do many of the right hand tasks..

Hey bud got a question for ya. I just bought a house with a fireplace. Never had one before. Not wanting to buy firewood just yet. Have you ever used a fiskar splitting axe and if so would you recommend it? If not what would be a good splitter to jist keep enough wood around for a normal fireplace that's not used to heat the entire house. Thanks for the feed back
Fiskar is great for that
Just tossing in a hearty second to Justin Santapole. The Fiskars splitting axe is the bomb! I've used one for several years now, splitting six to eight cords a year. Get the long (36") handled version.

Someone please tell me. Is the mcculloch 1-52 a good saw? Ever since I started watching Billy's videos I started wanting an old mcculloch power saw. I came across this 1-52 and bought it but think it needs a carb rebuild since it doesn't idle well. When I start it the idle slowly keeps creeping up higher and higher. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Be warned climber friends. You square file and run chisel chain on your climb saw you will be patching your pants. Mine ate up my pants swinging around on my saddle. I did cut fast.
