Let me tell you why I love this song so much. Back in 1982, when I was 17 years old, I was working at a Shell gas station in a small California desert town. This was when gas stations were still full service with a garage. I bought a 1968 Chevy Nova and spent almost every evening at the gas station trying to get the damn thing running. I installed an AM/FM stereo with an 8 track player, so even if the car wasn't running, I could at least listen to music. The only 8 track tape I had at the time was Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones. My girlfriend at the time was a girl name Rhonda, she was absolutely gorgeous to me. Every evening, she would walk to the station and sit inside the car with me for a few minutes while we listened to my Stones tape. Rhonda eventually moved away before I was able to get the Nova running, it completely broke my heart. Every time I hear Start me Up, I can't help but think of sitting inside the Nova and listening to it with Rhonda. I sure hope she met someone that treated her right because she certainly deserved it.
Bill's bass playing on this song really makes it for me. I remember seeing The Stones on the Steel Wheels tour and this was their opening song. I tell you, Bill's bass was like a punch in the gut! We were in the then Shea Stadium center field about 8 rows back, the best seats ever! And, Bill's bass just rolled around the stadium like a sledgehammer! IT. WAS. AWESOME.
Such a kicking good track! I’ll be happy to roll with these Stones any time and they were showing the world how they roll on this song! It’s like they spent the first 3:30 to set the mood and build us up for that incredibly mojo-filled ending…it’s worth the wait every time no matter how many times I’ve heard the song.
Bill’s playing here is amazing. I think it’s his best moment on record. And Charlie, holy shit, man, he’s giving a rock and roll masterclass. This is how you roll, people. A lot of drummers forget that part.
Let’s give some recognition to their producers and audio engineers. The audio quality is so good it’s like another band member we never see! The bass and drumming are especially bold and crisp sounding without sounding over modulated. Also, is it me or do some of the guitar parts sound like horn charts or, did the Stones have some “extra” studio musicians play trumpets for the final master? I thought the Stones were all bass, drums, lead and rhythm guitars, and Mick singing.
I remember seeing them perform this song at the first concert I ever went to. I was just a kid, but I vividly recall the powerful energy and how fun and overwhelming it was. To this day it stands out in my mind as the best concert I have ever been to.
Just saw them in concert. I am kicking myself for not seeing them all the times they came thru on concert. They were fantastic. The pure energy. The high point of my summer. Total happiness hangover the next day and the rest of the summer. The essence of rock n roll.
August 1981 this was released . Was at resort in Catskill. Pollaces when I first heard this . My parents aunt n uncle were listening to it. Great than Great now. I was 13
I was listening to Start Me Up a few months back - like, really listening to it and thought "this really grooves, like grooves and swaggers" and I decided I would learn to play it. Step 1 - open G tuning, Step 2, learn main riffs etc. Well, for the past 3 months I have got one guitar now permanently set up in open G and I've been noodling on other Stones songs and coming up with my own riffs in open G that have really unlocked a new way of playing and how I approach songwriting. Start me Up has "Restarted me Up". Thanks Keith, but dammit, now I'm forgetting all the songs I play in standard tuning! 😂
Love thy neighbor as thyself. I bring not peace but a sword. Here Jesus instructs those who would hear about the inherent evil in mankind and how to make them complacent in battle. The Bible later warns that good will eventually destroy evil, but fails to explain the nature of evil which is weaker than good in general. Do you believe the weak should pay with their lives? The world is evil and evil typically ruins everything. This is about 1/4 versus 3/4 of the population. I wish.
Man, what a good song for a Transformers movie trailer)
Damn bro beat me to it
You're come from the future ?

What can I say about this song? It’s damn near perfect.
My favorite Stones song.
Another iconic riff from Keith. Right from the start, this song has to be about how Keith's riffs get the band in the mood to rock n roll.
This song was rec around 1975, but not published until 1980!
