I feel like realistic shotguns would be incredibly overpowered, especially in PvP games. Which is why a lot of video games just make them pre-nerfed with the range of throwing rocks.

We have sniper rifles that can do the same when you quickscope
Mechanically pump-action shotgun is no different than bolt-action rifle from CoD2 but the firsts one gets range nerf but the latter one is acceptable
So no, I don't think so. It's more about players psychology and how majority of players got used to it

Nah just make it realistic with the spread, in real life you don’t get 1/4 of ur field of view. Buck shot will spread out to about 8” maybe at 30 feet. So if you shoot someone in a game that is 10 feet away you would have a spread of around 2.5” meaning you’d have to basically aim perfectly, unlike now in games where you have a massive cone to use.

The shotgun was my go to weapon when I played L4D2 with double pistols when I was out of ammo. It was the perfect combo.

I feel like Ready or Not has done justice to shotguns in video games. They are absolute powerhouses being able to drop people in one shot in most cases. However, they lack armour penetration, which is why you can load them with slugs. There's nothing a shotgun can't handle in that game.

Rising Storm 2 Vietnam got the most realistic depiction of shotgun in video game. It has insanely good spread and range, and in fact you can kill someone at +100m with it is amazing.

I like the reloading to pump each shotgun shot. It could allow us to slamshoot by holding the fire button and clicking reloading to shoot as fast as possible.

Shotguns are the most extreme case, but many games nerf guns in general, where an assault rifle feels like a BB gun. One of the better examples of making guns feel powerful is The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners. The shotgun there genuinely feels powerful, able to kill 2-3 zombies with a single well placed shot. And the assault rfile you get in NG+ feels powerful aswell.

I notice how in video games, shotguns are either:
    1. Super OP in close range (most games)
    2. Absolute terrible range and accuracy (Counter Strike)
3.Can be turned into a sniper because of slugs???? (Call Of Duty)
    4. Can 1 shot people in medium range if you maximize the accuracy.
    5. Some are peashooters and inconsistent like some auto shotguns like the Striker shotgun for example. But usually the pump shotgun is very consistent if you hit your shots

As a hardcore fan of pvp shooters: I despise the whole concept of shotgun in those types of games.
Shotguns in games are designed to sacrifice mid-long range efficiency for the sake of forgiving bad aim. It is especially annoying in the case of shotguns that depend on RNG in their spread: they sometimes straight oneshot you, sometimes barely scratch you. It's literally like a slot machine at that point.
If you consciously use a shotgun in pvp shooter to get (random) kills, because you know you wouldn't be able to consistently land shots with a sniper or control the recoil of a full auto, then imo you get what you deserve

Im playing VR games where you can also pick up shotguns, smg's, snipers etc, and it is plagued by the same problem. Each weapon has a trade off and that trade off should justify picking that weapon over something else. For example, if you pick a shotgun that sacrifices all of its mid and long range damage, then it better be near insta-kill at close range. However, in most games, shotguns compete with SMG's and pistols, which do just as much damage at close range(or even more) and also have mid range or even long range damage and accuracy. Take CS:GO for example. Shotguns in that game do almost no damage in long or mid range, and at close range, its on par with pistol/smg. I think games should allow choosing ammo type for shotguns -buckshot or slug. A slug would be like a type of "heavy ammo". You would only have 5-6 rounds in the clip, so you would have to aim and make each count . If you hit, in close-mid range, the enemy goes down. And with buckshot, headshot by even 1 pellet should = death.

What's about reloading mechanic, the best realisation I personally know is in "Beyond Citadel" game. Game itself isn't for everyone because of anime gore and erotic elements, but (!) default controls require from you fire, reload each time manually with C button, repeat. Also you can unload shell manually or put as many shells as you want.

Jagged alliance 2 which is 25 years old at this point gets the shotguns right. (modded to 1.13 though.) The spread is realistic, they dont destroy armor in two hits or partially penetrate it, rather they deal stun damage as does any bullet that doesn't penetrate but because the total damage of a shot or a slug is huge they knock down enemies rather easily. And there are special door busting shells you can buy.

A tip if i might say, would be giving credits to the authors of the videos, like Grand Thumb, as this can avoid some Copyright problems. At most, i really liked the video, hope this comment helps you a bit, and im eager to new videos ;) best regards man

i think gameplay wise it would be better to force the player to stand still (take a stable firing pose) to absorb the massive recoil. that is realistic and combined with realistic spread patterns and damage at range make the gun balanced
this could be enhanced by enebling a higher fire rate (better recoil controll + faster punping) when pressing forward at the same time as you fire the gun for each shot. IRL this is done by proficient shotgun users for this exact reason.
so in conclusion: while walking you have hipfire with massive recoil (slow fire rate), while aiming you have medium fire rate, if pushing forward while shooting you get faster fire rate. and since the spread is tight, hipfire is very difficult with the heavy recoil (disadvantage of using a shotgun), but when aimed it becomes very deadly, masterd it becomes the bringer of death.

The only game where the Shotgun feels good to use and stays a relevant, potent weapon until the end, is RAGE.
Sadly that game went pretty much under as it released at the same time as both Call of Duty and Battlefield.
In that title, the shotgun gets two possible upgrades and 4 different ammo types, making the weapon a reliable tool from early game to the final level.

They slap in Escape From Tarkov as well as long as you're using the right ammo like magnum buckshot, or flechette rounds. Flechette rounds are great against opponents with higher level armor. AP-20 armor piercing slugs used to be the best shells available. People got tired of getting one-tapped through their high tier armor, so AP-20 got nerfed, but it's still very usable. Even if you don't have good ammo for them you can still go for leg shots easily, or any other part of your opponent that's not covered by armor. Aiming for the opponent's face works two if they're not wearing a ballistic face shield, but it's obviously a bit harder to pull off than leg shots especially if using one of the many types of slugs. The rounds will likely ricochet off of their helmet if aim too high though, so most players go for the legs. The devs recently added the AA12, and the full-auto version of the Saiga 12K this last patch which are nearly over powered. The KS-23M, MP153, MP155, and M3 Super 90 are still some of the best shotguns with the MP153 being the most commonly used due to its wide availability, low cost, and high customizability. The KS-23M still has the ability to one-tap with leg shots when using Shrap-10 shells if it has been nerfed yet as well. The only one that is absolutely awful is the Toz-106 which is a bolt-action 20 gauge shotgun that uses 2 and 4 round mags. It's probably among the worst guns in the game. In general, most of them are viable throughout the wipe if used correctly with good ammo.

most games have shotguns that behave pretty much the same way as classic FPS shotguns. this means they are kind of a fish out of water in modern games. Games evolved and shotguns didn't.
Classic FPS had super fast movement that didn't limit your ability to shoot. There was no ADS and no sprinting, you could move at top speed in any direction with full accuracy. This made shotguns pretty difficult to use. The closer someone is the faster they move across your screen, this means that close range aiming took fast tracking and reaction time. The fact that shotguns forced you to get close made them difficult to use. Instakills were also very rare so any weapon that could was powerful. shotguns were an incredibly skillful and powerful tool. in modern FPS instakills are a dime a dozen and most weapons can instakill from much farther ranges then shotguns so they struggle. Classic FPS had far fewer weapons and those weapons had much more defined roles, shotguns fit in perfectly with these games. Shotguns were a difficult to use but incredibly gratifying tool.

you should try some twitch shooters. Shotguns work really well in games like quake and unreal tournament. you cant talk about shotguns and not mention the flac cannon or the doom supershotgun. Shotguns were made for twitch shooters. Plus learning to play twitch shooters would make you develop way more movement skills, instead of stopping to shoot you have to learn to shoot while moving and flying through the air. I used to play modern FPS but after I tried quake I could never go back, having to slow down to shoot feels like a ball and chain. The weapons in arena shooters are also a lot more interesting, unreal tournament has more verity in its like 10 weapons then most game have in 30 weapons. Modern games weapons are so boring and realistic, like oh boy another hitscan automatic gun with slightly different stats, how interesting.
