    Desi and Lucy took the primitive concept of TV and took it 30yrs straight into the future. Owning a production company, owning their show, creating new television innovations still used today. And starting the rerun. Most of all their show has been on tv ever since. Power couple? Complete understatement.

      Great succinct summary! Both made business decisions that changed entertainment history! From Desi inventing the rerun to Lucy overruling Desilu executives to give us Star Trek & Mission Impossible.

    Absolutely loving hearing the story of how 2 television pioneers " outsmarted " a whole network. Lucy AND Desi...what a team of geniuses.

    When Lucy died I called my mother and sobbed. The next day in the daylight, I drove with my head lights on to pay tribute to someone that brought so much to my life.

    Fantastic podcast! I know it can't cover everything about the on-air pregnancy, but it's worth saying that the scene at the nightclub where she informs Ricky was THE magical moment that cemented the show into viewer's hearts, and elevated it into something more than just a popular and well-done sitcom.

      Excellent insight. I can’t say I’ve seen every episode of every early television show, but based on what I’ve seen (of what remains preserved), I Love Lucy had more than a little extra something. From production value, to excellent writing, directing and acting Lucy was clearly more than a joke machine. And, yes, that moment at the nightclub, and the way it was executed, made for a milestone.

    I didn't realize that Gale Gordon had been " with " Lucy starting in her radio days. And apparently her core group of writers also started with her in radio and stayed through several of Lucy's later sitcom efforts.

I still watch it and remain a loyal fan of the Lucy & Desi I Love Lucy episodes shown in the ‘50’s & look forward every time they colorize an episode to see the actual colors of the wardrobes used during that time. These podcasts are wonderful and so informative. Many thank yous for your diligent efforts in putting it all together ❤️🙏🏻

    Desi's signature was, "Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do...!" The vitameagen vegetable commercial episode is my favorite, I think. I like Lucy and Ethel paint the apartment, Lucy and Ethel buy a dress shop, the Ricardos sue the Mertzes over a broken TV, and the trip to Europe episodes - those are favorites, too. . I saw the original set of "I ❤ Lucy" on display at the California State Fair around 20 years ago.

    This series is fabulous! Btw, does anyone know how to get a complete episode of "Breakfast w Ricky and Lucy." I can't find it, and can only find a brief clip from that episode here on youtube. This is the episode where Lucy finds out Ricky didn't want her to co-star in a televised breakfast show, which is really just a long pitch for the sponsor Phipps Department Store.

    Both Lucy and Desi were so brave to dive into television with the show at that time. Racism was alive and well. The fact that they kept pushing against that total crap is WHY we have I Love Lucy to this day. It's just a sad commentary that their personal relationship imploded along that incredibly fascinating journey....

    • @brianoyler4777
      @brianoyler4777 3 роки тому +5

      Julie Nunn...
      I do not consider the imploded personal relationship was a sad commentary. Desi's womanizing was the main factor for the divorce. She filed for divorce in '44 for basically the same reason, but they reconciled. Granted Lucille may not have been the easiest to get along with, but she was putting up with his " carrying on" for years. She said "enough".

    • @Julieglam3
      @Julieglam3 3 роки тому +6

      @@brianoyler4777 any time or for any reason why two people who fall so in love with each other end up in a divorce, to me that is sad. Yes, I know Desi was a womanizer, however Lucy was no dummy. She had to know on some level who he was when she married him. She knew the first man she became involved with had mob connections but it didn't stop her from falling for him. I am also sure that mistakes came from both her AND Desi. It does take two after all...but I still think its sad...not just for them but it sure was for their kids too...

    20:06 At first I thought you were just using audio of the characters, but then I heard DESI say, "VIVIAN VANCE, I'd like you to meet...." Now, he could have been introducing her to anyone in that clip, but that was not audio of Ricky introducing Ethel. So is this just radio production manipulation of different audio tracks? At what point was a microphone on recording Desi introducing Vivian to anyone? I mean, that COULD be a recording of Desi introducing Lucy & Vivian, but that's just such a historic moment that you'd think I would have heard it before now.
    Is there a recording of Lucy & Vivian meeting? If not, to whom is Desi introducing Vivian in that clip? If yes, then how fortunate for historians that there was a live mic capturing that moment! And where can I heard the unedited recording?
    Please explain. I know how sound is edited to tell a story, but why would a live mic be on Desi introducing Vivian to ANYONE?
    OMG, that would blow my mind to hear the, "How do you do?" exchange that started the funniest, most enduring, most widely recognized, & most beloved comedic duo in history! That's why I don't think it's real or I would have heard it before now.
