Nathan, very interesting video. I never really gave much thought to what goes into a kiln...but now I have a much better idea. My favorite part of this video had nothing to do with the kiln build...as interesting as it is. It was that picture of you and your son in front of the water fall, you holding his hand. Thank the Good Lord there are still men out there who know how to be a DAD as well as a father....and there is a huge difference between the two. Kudos to you for being a DAD to your son!
All the negative. I thought it was informational. I left knowing more than I did prior to watching. Good video. People need to read commentaries before commenting cause allot of the questions are repeat, and for those who did not like the music you can always mute and watch the video. Be positive, life is too short. Keep making sawdust.
This is your best yet . This vid shows how much hard work goes in to building a dryer let alone the coast . I just wish I was there with you . Well done .. (the bodger from down under)
Love your videos they are a big help to me and I'm just getting started with a sawmill, your doing everything I want to do and will be doing, I maybe buying a wood mizer next week. .Thank you for sharing with us.
I'd be nice if the waterfall was close to the kiln, then you could put a small hydro unit in to make the electricity for the heater. I looked into them when we were looking for a house, and some only need an 18" drop to run efficiently. The nice thing about a hydro unit is it produces 24/7. Neat build though, great job! I like the fact that you didn't cut corners. I am looking into a kiln that uses passive solar, because the place I bought has 10 acres, mostly Walnut, and some big Oaks. I intend to cut it for my own use, not for sale. Anymore, I have 3 speeds, slow, slower, and stop, so I can wait on the wood to dry. Thank you for posting, Smiles!
Good video ... looks like a lot of work and fairly major dollar investment. Question ... unless you had zoning issues why wouldn't you use a 20 foot sea container and insulate it?
A used 20ft shipping container is about $2500 including delivery to most places in the USA. Not sure that's cheaper than the wooden structure these guys built.
Would have been a million times better with commentary instead of that annoying noise that was being played. But I loved the build. Gave me ideas for my own. Thanks
cool build. I need to make one of these. I think you need a little more insulation. lol just kidding. On a serious note job well done. Thanks for sharing
Nice build, just out of curiosity why not go with a spray foam for the insulation? From what i hear its supposed to be a product that can be an insulation and vapor barrier and be air tight after its installed. I don't know the cost of it would have been but if its as good as i hear it would have saved you loads of time on insulating that place. Either way great build very methodical.
Nice job on your kiln build. I am in the planning stage of building one like yours. Where did you get your Mechatronic fans? I am afraid of using a fan that won't hold up to the heat.
Is it true that the tree trunk is the only piece of wood that is worth using? I'm told the branches are under so much constant stress, they won't stay straight even at 6% moisture.
I wish I knew why you built the roof like you did, with all the drop in panels and then the space between roof and ceiling???? Also, why stack those foam insulation panels on top of the wood like you did???
Very Nice !! I was wondering if you had considered using spray foam insulation for between the studs and rafters? I know it is available in portable 3 - 5 gallon tanks. I would think that would have saved you some time with sealing the gaps and making the kiln airtight. Could you discuss your reasons for choosing the Fiberglass vs the closed cell spray foam?
I'm currently finishing a live edges kitchen table. There are however some lines /grooves going straight across the table which I've been told are sticker marks from the kiln. How can I fix this ? Do I have to sand whole table down to depth of groove or can I fill will epoxy or filler and then stain . Thank you in advance
Do you have any idea how long it takes for drying? months per inch? Or just a basic reference like a freshly milled 2x8? I'd like to build outbuildings from my own milled wood after I build my pole barn style home in Georgia so I can keep costs low.
I did however in the winter months they are not effective and its hard to control the air temp inside. And very hard to reach 150deg to sterilize the load.
Out of the Woods if your kiln wasn't large enough for the volume of lumber you milled couldn't you theoretically air dry the lumber, then put it in the kiln just for the sterilization process?
yes and no, air drying can only get it as dry as its environment it is in. the kiln removes the last bit of water that air drying can not get to, that is probably clear as mud,
Makes perfect sense for those that ask and not just try to think they are smarter. Have to use kiln dried wood to build a kiln. I didn’t have one so I built one. Green wood to build a kiln or air dried would be a disaster. Educate yourself before trying to think you are smarter than you look.
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Thanks for the reply, love your videos. Keep up the good work. I figured you wanted dry and stable with all the heat you will have in there.
Sorry if this is a repeat and I'm way behind the time curve, too. Never put anything on the side (or roof) of a building that impedes the flow of water off a structure. The horizontal 1x2 will collect standing rain and then fungus and mildew can grow, especially on the north side.To extend the length of the vertical 1x2s just cut 45° ends and overlap the upper over the lower 1x2. There are easy fixes to removing the horizontal 1x2. I enjoy situations like this because I use the opportunity not to hide my mistake but to add an ornamental detail to the building.
what was the purpose of using the Styrofoam insulation , its only R 3 , by compressing the fibreglass insulation you probably took that R 3 away from it , also you should of cut the insulation instead of bending the sides up and stuffing it in , it should be a running fit, the low expansion was a waste of money you should have used the fibreglass that you trimmed of batts , ibet you never got more than r 12 , 2X6 stud wall , 6 " r20 fibreglass insulation covered with 6 mm poly , tape the seems , then take the rigid insulation and nail on outside of building , cover with plywood or siding. thats the way we keep the heat in up here in Canada anyways, the poly is your vapour barrier and would keep moister from lumber from rotting insulation and studs,

Lowe's employee: how much insulation would you like sir?
This guy: yes
Stout! That is one structure that will be around for a good many years. Happy drying.
Mike
Thanks Mike! Hope it out lives me!!
Awesome video. Why the second ceiling. Just to make insulating better?
Yes
Great build by the way! With lumber prices the way they are today, you could probably build that for under a half a million!
Yeah saw your own logs for sure
Could second as a big smoker during hunting season. Lol. Thanks for the information

I’m in Knoxville and have just purchased a sawmill.
I’d love to drive out one weekend and talk with you a little about the sawmill business.

Great video, really enjoy Jeff Pianki's music he is very good.
+TheRedhawke yes. I don’t think he is still making music anymore though sadly
Thanks so much. Been sawing wood 1/4 round and wondering how to dry or at least get down to 15%
What was the final cost? When i did mine i used r 30 insulation with the 5mil plastic. It does the job for me.
well done, I enjoyed this series,

Great job guys, really impressive! Would love to build something like this myself one day
Thanks. Appreciate you watching
Great! Im enjoying your channel. And I got a good laugh over you loading up.the dimensional lumber from the yard.
👍
Great video. On an average how long does it take to dry any specie of wood.
about 7 days but that is after air drying first, green is about 30 days,

Can your kiln dry down to 7 to 9%? In what period of time for 8/4 slabs?
Love it bro. Proud of ya

Can a steel frame shed be used as the framing for a kiln. I just bought a sawmill. Thanks for the videos. So many trees, so little time!!
I’d say yes long as it’s insulated correctly. Thanks for watching
Could you use this type of Kiln to dry firewood placed in wire baskets?
What size was the roomier unit you got?

That decision was all based on $, much more affordable, the spray foam would have been ideal but was very expensive when compared to what I used,
Just curious. How hot does your kiln get inside max temperature? Thanks.
it can get up to 150 F
Waiting for Ned Beatty to show up.
Very cool brother.... How long do you air dry slabs before kiln drying
Prefer at least a year longer the better

Hi sir ,how to build one i have 200 truck loads of firewood who to ask welder or renovator framer do u suggest one or can u do for cost$ please
Hi , do you sell your plans for this specific kiln? I am interested in building one.
Materials? Equipment needed? Great job!
That had to cost a fortune.
How much power is required for the drying unit?
110
@@OutoftheWoods0623 amps?
The plywood i understand, but why did you buy 2 x 4 's from the store when you make them?
cant use green, it would rot inside the insulated walls,
Did you ever consider a solar Kiln? In your area I would think it would work nicely.
I did however in the winter months they are not effective and its hard to control the air temp inside. And very hard to reach 150deg to sterilize the load.
I heard that in pine you want even higher temps to set pitch have heard or know anything about that?
Yes to set the pitch in pine you have to do a final 24 hours of sterilization of at least 150 dg but 160 is preferred.
Out of the Woods if your kiln wasn't large enough for the volume of lumber you milled couldn't you theoretically air dry the lumber, then put it in the kiln just for the sterilization process?

This is great. How is the natural cracking / wood splitting with this sped up process? Can you choose intensity? Have you dialed it up or down?
Wood splitting of it happens it occurs while air drying. No dial up. Thanks for watching
Thanks Nath.
Is the insulation place backwards for a specific purpose?*
They want to keep the heat in, not out.
Do you recall how much it was for all the materials?
I'd like to see at least a 20 ft long wood fired version
how long does wood dry?

How much does a build like this increase dry time?
cant put into words, it makes everything faster and better and more profitable,
Crazy. I'd think you'd be able to quantify a reduction of drying time
What's with the funeral music?

drying lumber now with this kiln going on 3 years, works just fine,
You can find best solutions on Avasva website.
That's way overboard, wood will rehydrate to whatever the surrounding ambient humidity is, once removed from a kiln "/
Nope works just fine 4 years later.
