People get easily offended by the price but for most of us this would be a once in a lifetime purchase that would bring 10000s of hours of joy. Equally if your epiphone does that for you great.

I think people who buy gibson MLs have other instruments in their collection to spend 10k of hourse with. And Gibson MLs are made for those who appreciate history, for playing there are any other custom made guitars like Suhr that do the job 100% better.

I've been lucky enough to try many LPs in the past years (including an original vintage 1960) and I have to say that I never played a disappointing Murphy Lab model. They all sounded and feel absolutely amazing. I have a LP custom and a 1958 reissue and even if they are really nice guitars they don't feel as good as the Murphy Lab.
I know they are expensive, probably too much but they are absolutely great. Great playing as always btw ;)

I never pictured the Les Paul being played this clean . I usually thought of it is as over driven rock machine . It’s such a versatile guitar that doesn’t get enough credit for that

I don't mind aging, but I wear my guitar low and never sit down to play, so my arm wear is in a totally different spot than where they always put it. I do intend to get a made-to-measure at the garage since I'm pretty close to nashville, so I'll see if they'll move it for me.

That would be interesting to hear if they do that with the wear mark

These are truely amazing instruments. I am fortunate to have a Gibson CS and Murphy Lab retailer around the corner, and got to play quite a few of them. (it's a curse at the same time obviously) And because of that I ended up buying a Maybach Lester 59 in Midnight Sunset - Aged. They are such a great compromise and capture all the important aspects of a good LP in my opinion. Looks pretty much like the LP in your video, thick 59' neck, 3.2kg, Plek'd, amazing pick-ups, decent relic. Cost me less than a USA Standard.

I bought an Ebony Les Paul Standard in the late 90s. I always loved sunburst Les Pauls but a part of me thought I wasn’t good enough to carry one off. I thought the ebony was more fitting.
I sometimes regret not buying a sunburst one but when I open the case, the black looks so good (and it plays and sounds great) that I change my mind.
I often said when I had the money I would buy a honey burst R9 (not relic’d) but I can’t justify ploughing that much money into one. I might buy something like an Epiphone, Larry Carlton, Tokai etc. just to have something burst-like.

The pickups sound good. The rest of the specs and attributes don't really mean much on any guitar. For those, I only care if the guitar plays well, is stable, doesn't weigh too much, and is affordable. If it looks nice, that's a bonus, but those type things are an individual/personal preferences.
One interesting thing is the Nylon nut. I have a slab of Nylon that I saved from a old bathroom renovation - Just the right size for making Nuts and Saddles! I made a Nylon nut to replace the Bone nut in my Classical Guitar. After I shaped and finished it, I compared its resonant pitch to the Bone nut pitch by tapping them on a table and other surfaces. To my surprise, they were nearly identical. The Nylon was a bit harder to file, as the material tends to clog files an sandpaper. The Nylon feels a little oily, but string friction through the slots seem about the same as bone. As far as sound/tone, they are nearly indistinguishable. Maybe the Nylon nut on the open strings sounds a little closer to the sound of the fretted notes ... maybe.

Odd and unrelated question, but lately I'm so impressed by Irongear pickups. You being a brit and they're a british company, any chance of a review? (Their "rolling mills" are absolutely amazing to me, and with raw nickel covers... *french kiss*)

The problem with Gibson is that they are inconsistant. Probably it's due to the nature of the woods or construction but I tried an R9 and it was beautiful to see. It didn't play well at all and felt un finished. On the other hand, I tried the R8 (that I bought) and it was lighter in weight, action perfect and resonated for ever. The best is to alway try a guitar before you buy and avoid buying it online.

It is Elodie!! So Cute!!!! The only advantage of badly aged is you don't care if you further nick it up. My 1st good guitar was a black finish, i was constantly touching up that Paint, Relicing is not for me either it will get it's own with playing.

  • @davidyelland908

As good as you have sounded JNC. Lovely variation from clean to driven. I consider custom shop LP from 2013 onwards but pre Murphy lab is the financial sweet spot. Paying so much extra for relicing is not for the workjng musician IMO.
Like all guitars you still need to try several to find “the one”. Not quality control, just a natural variation caused by wood.

Sounds lovely, but any guitar costing £1000 or more SHOULD sound good. It's no use blaming Gibson for these outrageous prices (eg, the J/Page double neck limited to 50 run guitar at £47.399). Gibson saw us coming...( beating up the instrument for extra).. but we have only ourselves to blame. The guitars played by most of our early heroes weren't that costly, in fact Gibson stopped making the LP, and they were probably quite cheap for the thin lizzy crowd to buy. If they are charging too much, then who are the idiots who are willing to pay? A fool and his money are soon parted, and if everyone stopped buying these rip-off instruments, Gibson would be forced to lower their prices. Frank Zappa was once asked why so much ( then current) pop music was so bad. He answered by saying "Who is buying it?" If we want music to improve ( or prices to lower) then vote with your wallet, and be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Anything for sale is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it.

Just buy a guitar and keep it. People worry about the prices and buying and reselling too much. It’s expensive but cheaper than buying and selling a bunch of worse guitars
