NPR's worst nightmare: poor background, Oxford educated on scholarship, Labour-voting lefty, gay. He voted for Brexit but that has no meaning in the US. They'd have to edit out everything but prepositions.

That and the fact he (Andrew Doyle) isn't given to peer review in his chosen profession of info'tainment, where playing to the Shakespearean ground level standing room nearest the stage paid audience means he gets mostly self-selected folks who aggrieve errrrrr agree with his views. Reaction is as reaction does. Not to be mistaken for the process inherent in authentic polemics that is more often found in silo'd specialized PhD publications.
I've no background or previous familiarity with Andrew Doyle and I read widely, especially the indie and usually justifiably aggrieved entertainers, some of whom like Boghossian are worthy polemical educators (even Merry Pranksters of Publish\Perish specialized and silo'd periodicals and policy papers. I have been doing social justic work for my whole life and professionally for almost two decades now...what we see today is not the work I got into. And I will never stop fighting to bring us back to reality and sanity.

This was probably my favorite book of 2022. It was such a brilliant, concise distillation of the cultural milieu. The Salem witch trials were a perfect analogy, I went back through the Crucible because of this book. Thanks Professor B.

You make them feel small. I also fat and ginger at school (still ginger) and I had a bully say to me "You're a ginger fatty". I replied, "Thank-you so much Jenna, you're a genius. I had no idea that I was fat or ginger without your wisdom". Everyone who heard it laughed at her, that was the last time she bothered me.
This was amazing, Peter. I'm getting the book and recommending this video to those whom I know have been drastically effected by the WOKE movement. My hope is that some of them have Andrew Doyle on for an interview, too, to help get his words and book out to more of the world. My grateful thanks to both of you.

Agreed. I was amazed at how well he sums it all up and communicates it in a detailed and articulate, but logical and understandable way. His other interview with Peter is even better. Its a lot longer but if you've got the time it's a real eye opener.
Great discussion guys, much appreciated. I'm in the San Francisco Bay area and can report that this woke ideology has wormed its way into the local governments, schools and the big tech companies. There's a palpable fear in the business community to go alone with this madness to avoid organized campaigns attacking their brands. The more good content like yours that people connect with, the more progress can be made in rolling back this lunacy.

I can confirm that in other languages or at least in mine (Slovak) wokeism spreads in English. Because in Slovak many things do not make sense and sound very silly. Now, things are 'queer', we see 'shaming', 'gender' is a concept that barely makes sense outside of linguistics, either. Amazing video, Peter. I like your work. Thank you.
True. Gender only makes sense as masculine, feminine neuter and so on
"Gender" used to be exclusvely a grammatical term. It was co-opted by this insanity because the notion of grammitcal gender suggests that physical sex also is arbitrary. So it was handy.
Too be fair, none of these ideas make sense in English either. It's just that leftist automatons can be programmed to believe anything.

Of the 5 animal urges, the will to power seems to be the most insidious. It's part of our makeup, and must be recognized as such, but it must be always kept in check. This theme runs deep in human history and surfaces from time to time together with the voices of brave people who push back against it.
For species that live in groups (wolves, cattle, etc.) the "will to power" is absolutely essential in order to preserve the health of the species' DNA. Without competition to be at the head of a hierarchy, the species will become dysfunctional and will become extinct. ALL tendencies are unhealthy if taken to an extreme.

When someone calls whoever a progressive they are saying that person is an elitist. When someone calls themself a progressive they're saying I'm an elitist.
The trans medicalization of children are the equivalent of sexual lobotomies. Actual lobotomies back in the 30s and 40s were helpful to a very small number of people and you could argue they had a role, but were terribly harmful to most who received them. This is a similar scandal.
Lobotomies were not good for anyone. They result in split - brain patients.
I studied it in college, the results were quite cruel. I took a special interest in it as I have epilepsy and the thought that it could have been me was terrifying.
@@Madonnalitta1 There was a very small minority of people who spoke of how it helped them, much like the very few transpeople whose transition has stood the test of time, like Buck Angel.
But it was cruel and horrific for most, like it will be for trans kids who realize, as adults, what's been taken from them.

@Andrew So glad I bought your book! Peter alluded to it last May in a podcast (Objective Standard Inst.) but didn't reveal the author or title, only mentioning that it's "Cynical Theories' times a thousand."
As a student in China in 1986~87, I got to know a few former red guards from the Cultural Revolution. They were just a few years older than me, and had been barely-post-pubescent teenagers at the time, when they were ordering their elders to recite passages from Mao's little red book. (When I knew them, they were grad students at my university.) I've been reminded of that more and more in recent years as the "woke/cancel culture" disputes have gotten louder.
This is a universal human frailty -- tribal hysteria -- that can be unleashed by any ideology. It's the exact same phenomenon as what drove the Salem Witch Trials, except that episode was inspired by Christian extremism, instead of Maoist extremism.

Understanding the meaning of words is the first step.
I always got the impression that Matt Walsh was "cancelling" people in the same way that a parent will use the lingo of their kids to cause maximum cringe. I think you two could have an interesting conversation.
Matt Walsh is a standard tradcon with nothing new to say. There was zero opposition to pandering to feelings and denying reality until weak men wanted to get in on it. Predating on children was a joke when women were doing it to boys, but is suddenly opposed now that sick men calling themselves women want in on it. People like Walsh are half the problem because their highest priority is to hold women sacred above all other considerations, even the safety of children. Of course weak men will want to become women when being a woman means unearned praise and no responsibility.
Language is powerful. Abuse of language is deadly.

Peter is the person smart people go to for good ideas and better ways to see the world.
20 years ago I was reading Camille Paglia, who predicted all of this with stark accuracy. She also is really good at tracing its roots, and showing its influence on acedemia.

Denialism: Me to an educated, middle-class, middle-aged lady this week - 'I really disapprove of police officers wearing the insignia of the ABC-Mafia on their uniforms'.
Her (shocked): 'Oh, no, that doesn't happen. It's illegal!'.
C'mon Peter, why the dig on Matt Walsh? He addressed your challenge. And his 'cancelations' are obviously done tongue in cheek. Why not interview him instead? He's an ally of yours on this very important cultural issue.
This is why I chose MaryDyer as my username and pfp. Mary Dyer was a Quaker executed by the Puritans in Boston in 1660 for the crime of…being a Quaker. The Puritans came to the new world for freedom of religion…but only their religion. They had banished Mary to Rhode Island multiple times but she kept defiantly returning to Boston. Ultimately they hanged her on Boston Common. Her crime was having a different belief system.
Peter and Andrew are very diffwent. Very different. I have watched a lot of Peer's Techniques with students standing on position lines etc and what Peter is mostly doing is facilitating a conversation and a debate and never really coming to much of a conclusion nor taking a stance to combat The New Puritan beliefs. I gues this is because deep down he also worries about being cancelled. Andrew has developed his stand in particular over the last two years, as has Helen Joyce, as has Douglas Murray where they now take a very clear, concise, and well articulated poistion. They know that the hysterics are not debatable - they simply wont debate - so there is not much point facilitating endless debates. We also have Harry Miller and The Bad Law projct and they are literally taking each and every Police Chief in the UK to court over their new Non Hate Crime Hate Crime activities - Harry is not debating them he is simply finding them exposing them and threatening to sue them so he is literally going after the Woke Police in the UK and he is winning as they collapse like a pack of cards everytime he does it. You should go on UA-cam and watch an example with Harry Miller and Lawrnece Fox when they help an Army Veteran who has been apporached by the Police for something he re-posted on line. You will then see what I mean
Peter has already been cancelled. I think you're not understanding Peter's street epistemology efforts here. He's not trying to lead anyone he speaks with on the street to reach a different conclusion. He's trying to get them to understand what the basis of their beliefs are. You are not going to change anyone's mind on a 10 minute conversation. You might, however, get them to question. Someone who starts questioning things may start looking for alternative information. Peter has other forums for his advocacy efforts.
I remember back in the day when we heard how girls in other countries were having to have female castration done to them, we were appalled. Now people are being ruined left and right, here on America, and if we dare say a negative word about, we lose everything we have. What a freaking shame!

To what degree is the care about group identity about the ability of it to be able to mobilize groups to complete certain goals? Like is it a means that is easier to use than it is to appeal to peoples individual interests?
What if that one group wants to take rights and privileges from another group to complete its certain goals? The goal should be universal rights and privileges. I am not going to be treated unfairly just so some other group can get ahead. That is not a sacrifice I am willing to make.

I have roughly a 9th grade education, a GED, and a few sadly misdirected years at a public university who's focus is churning out teachers and social workers. I have read a bit independently and try to be thoughtful and open minded. However I am totally skeptical of most woke ideology and totally don't buy what they're selling with sex and gender but is this really surprising? I mean, really? The writing was clearly on the university walls when i went 25 years ago. It was depressing. There was no forum to push back even then. Anyway, I got scared and dropped out. None of this is new. It is just as scary as it was then. Especially now at 50 years old. Lol. Strength and love.

And our *Law* becomes based on frank lies! And this means that in order not to lie - for example, to children - you have to break the Law! Christina Ellingson, for example, is facing prison for saying that a man cannot be a mother, and a man cannot be a lesbian - this in Norway!
Gender affirming care is also a means of removing those susceptible to these feelings from the gene pool.

Great topic. Reminds me somewhat of seeing the content of Harvard Business Review and topics such as human resource management making it's way from the business world into government, church, charity etc in the 1990s/2000s.
There was a former speechwriter of the Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating called Don Watson. He wrote a book "The Decay of Public Language" and commented on language with corporatism and its tentacles into our culture. This seems like a natural evolution where what we term woke culture and language permeates everything. Then suddenly as Andrew Doyle points out you have the UK Ministry of Defence talking about LGBT instead of focussing on the main game of thwarting the real enemy, i.e. Vladimir Putin.

Seriously excellent conversation. It's incredibly refreshing to watch two intelligent, free thinkers hold truth as their north star and cut through the heart of this pervasive ideology with knowledge, reason and provable fact. I totally agree. This ideology has ruined the meaning of Left and right. It has become a tool for segregation and division without any real meaning anymore. It's funny; in this ideology, everything is non binary and" on a spectrum", except political beliefs! You are either left/woke/good or right/bigot/bad. I think that shifting the lense to : people promoting authoritarianism or people against authoritarianism, is a much more accurate way of looking at this and it also helps prevent people falling into group think traps.
Very scary to hear the dictionary definitions are being changed...... soooo scary!

Adding to the discussion at about the 26 minute mark. There is a key difference in the way institutions make arguments from authority for the woke. If you take medicine as an institution, it requires trust for people to want to go to the doctor. That trust is established not only by the quality of the outcome, but also outreach. Medical professionals are able to present compelling evidence to the public that they can understand in all cases where their arguments are supported by reason. Our institutions that advance cosmology and physics do the same thing to garner the financial support they need to endure. You may need a PhD to make the breakthrough discoveries that propel us forward, but you only need a moderate western education to understand why they are most likely true. That is not the case with woke ideology. There is no compelling evidence that can convince the general public (that is not indoctrinated ) there in an ounce of truth in what they are saying. There is only the power to compel on the basis of authority derived from an institution they are actively destroying with every lie they tell. This is a road back to the dark ages.
