They really missed an opportunity to make this thing the best, by the way the implemented the looper. First, the fact that it doesn't sync start and stop time with the sequencer, is pretty much a deal breaker. Once a loop is taken, you then have to assign it to a pad, place it in the sequence and delete it out of the looper all before the sequence loops back around. This means its pretty much out the door to be used as a performance looper. Its the same way in the MPC one and MPC 2500, which is trash. It should have been done when you choose to resample to a pad. It could just start looping automatically once you get the loop, then you could just start taking another one. Or if you used it how it is now, it could place a step on the one when you assign it to a pad and delete the looper buffer, like it does in the Isla s2400. As some one who plays a lot of instruments and uses live looping heavily in my workflow, I will have to stick to the s2400 and Boss RC505mkii (which both have the live looping game spot on), for that job. As well as Loopy Pro on the iPad. Its a real shame because now that they chose this method I seriously doubt that they will change it and implement a real live looper. They almost had it though. The Sample Trek suffers from this same flaw with their "live looper".
I hear you, and while I'm stoked we have any form of a looper on here now, having at least 2-4 overdub mutes even would go a long way. There's always a chance they'll continue to update it with more features but I guess we'll just have to see.
I use a RC-505 MK2 for my live looping too. I bought the SP-404 mk2 with a vision of processing my 505 loops into the 404 and then to loop my loops back and forth between the two. Reading your response however, i feel what id like to achieve might be too troublesome? I've just recently got the SP-404 MK2 so I'm still learning. Any way to record RC-505 MK2 loops into SP-404 MK2 in a live-looping situation?
Got a mkII about 3 weeks ago and i love this machine! I hardly use the looper function because i love skip back feature :) I do wish Roland would make a mobile app so that we can rename the samples on the phone rather then on the machine and would also be nice to load project or backup project to the phone.
Interesting, how are you using skipback? The one way I typically used it was to record live instruments over patterns playing using the ext in setting. Looper, for me, just offers so much more... especially with that play rate, but that's what's so dope about the SP there's a different workflow for everyone! I'd definitely love to see a phone app or even a better desktop app, maybe that's coming in a future update though, I guess we'll see :)
Hello, as a guitarist and ambient player, have you seen that you can make seamless loops with the SP404mk2's looper? By this I mean no sound clipping on the loop even with a long reverb? As with a standard guitar looper, all you have to do is loop from empty (autotrig OFF) and then start overdubbing.
Hey, I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking, sorry. If by seamless you mean an exact measure, like setting 4 bars and it does 4 bars, yeah it does that. If by clipping you mean distortion, that happens only if you’re using a few overdubs of fx like compression on bus 3 and 4. I’ve found when looping guitars with long reverb, I like to turn the instant overdub on when recording my first loop, this way the first overdub catches the reverb tail at the end of the loop so the intro has a little of the end
I hear you, would be nice to have 3 & 4 separate. I'd also love to see them make internal use of the input fx. Having 5 bus fx would be so sick, would help to have an isolator for cutting low end on samples and what not
Nice content! Appreciate your work. I also really appreciate Roland keeping up with their almost always unexpected cult following of quirky artist who use their products in ways unintended by the manufacturer. It's where they shine and we separate. In high school, I wrote and performed hip-hop/punk with a crusty Roland CR-68, Ibanez rg170, and a tascam 4 track. No midi, no sync, no fx and I adjusted bpm to the tape stretching. Absolutely painful, but I was likely more interesting than the next kid sporting his new laptop mp3 player on stage. The 404 still resides proudly on the instrument side. What I'm attempting to express is that some of you (comments) have all your answers right there with you. Creative workarounds that surpass perceived limitations tend to be artistically gratifying. Just a thought.
sorry if this has been mentioned but can i copy paste the loop to a sample slot while the loop is playing (without stopping the music) and seamlessly switch back and forth between that sample (or another) and the looper ?
I don't have the sp in front of me, but I believe you can copy to a sample pad while the looper is playing. Your second part, the seamless back and forth is probably a lot harder as it would rely on start and stopping the sample pad and the looper at the same time. I would think it's "doable" but probably clunky and very reliant on syncing the button presses. Hope that helps :)
Hi, I'm exploring the option of buying this product, but from my research I can't find what is the behavior like when I'm sampling with the looper and in the same time I have a pattern playing as an external audio input. Could you please give a feedback about this use case? Thank you.
So I'm not sure which part you're trying to record, the looper playback without the external audio pattern, or the external audio without the looper. In record settings you can set the record to ext in only or all, but I don't think you'd be able to record just the looper while an external input is coming through.
I haven't used the looper synced with external gear in a while, but from what I recall you still need to set the bpm internally... I'll try and test it again when I put the setup back together. LMK if you try it :)
Impressive ! I wish I could master my SP as you do ;-). Thanks for sharing !
Just keep on creating brother!
Appreciate it! It just takes time and muscle memory with it, you got this :)
Yeah watch videos and then implement little by little new ideas into your workflow.

you nailed it pretty much. i tried getting along with it to sync playing live instruments to a sequence but i ran into too many issues.
I use a RC-505 MK2 for my live looping too.

I hope @roland #roland pay attention to this comment. It's pure sense. Which seems to be lacking on the looper
Yes, and 4 bar limit. I use the RC 5 and It's still better...

Awesome vid! What effect did you do at 14:31 when you went to bus 1?
Cheers! SX Reverb was on bus 1 when I switched over, then I switched to DJFX and finally Super Filter :)
@@sunwarper thx! So that stutter effect was dj? Gonna try it out
yeah! moving it up to the higher settings can give a good stutter sound :)
I wish they would make all the Bus independent of each other.

@@sunwarper facts on facts! 5 bus would be incredible!
@@bjamminsincebirth3494probably a limitation of the chip. I would think they’ve already considered this
Or at least an option to run then thay way

to my mind they should have made the pads like ableton session view... 16 loop slots that can then mute/toggle...
I’m with you 100% I’d even settle for just 4 layer mutes or something

can I use this one for live performances to create vocal layers, putting them in loop together with a playback track? thanks.
You can, but you can't sync the playback with the loop so you gotta get a little creative to make sure the timing is synced.
@@sunwarper thanks.
