  • No, there's no April Fool's Joke here, this is a legit video. Today, I'm covering the visual mediums of Bionicle's Reboot, namely the 2015 animated Webisodes, and the Netflix miniseries, The Journey to One. Can they help this incarnation of the franchise escape G1's shadow, or did the modernization measures compromise it?

Yeah, as sympathetic as I was to G2's story potential, its execution has A LOT to be desired. At least it gave reviewers like yourself some material to work with, (as well as giving me inspiration to write a sequel which hopefully is better). The review is pretty decent, and I think it should get more attention. Best wishes for the future. Take care.

I think what they could have done is tease connections to gen 1 underneath the surface, but made it vague enough to where it could be it's own separate universe if it was strong enough. Since all I saw the hype for it being was how does it connect to gen 1. I heard a rumor saying that the Lego team feared the story was too confusing and complex to get into which is why they did soft reboots in 2004 and again in 2009 which I can agree with for the times, but there is no need anymore. In this age of streaming anyone can look up the info they need in a very time efficient manner. I mean, look at what we are doing now.

G2 has some of my favorite sets, and is what got me back into Bionicle as an adult; so it always has a soft spot in my heart. But the story is unfortunately a pale shadow of the original. Great if you want to create original characters and story, since the canon is so bare its hard to break anything in it unlike G1 though. Example, I saw a several comment long debate after somebody on Facebook recently created a Mahri-Toran style MOC but said they wanted it to be a Metru-Toran, and people chewed them out saying "that breaks the canon." G2 is a much better blank slate for MOCists in that regard to create whatever they want as long as its vaguely Bionicle, and since I love the CCBS system's durability and simplicity I personally have more G2 MOCs than I have G2 official sets at this point.

I actually like Bionicle G2 better than G1.
Mainly because G2 was my first introduction to Bionicle.

One thing I did like is pohatu being the main character in the show. So many times the toa of stone aka po gets overlooked by the more colorful counterparts, doing this would make people want to buy him and possibly the other stone related sets

As underwhelming as the lore and story was for G2 the sets themselves were amazing, they probably are objectively the best quality, best value for money Bionicle sets ever released, I think the only G1 sets to ever really come close were the Toa Mata and Toa Metru

I will respectfully disagree with you on the first three episodes of JtO. After the second episode I struggled to put on the next because I thought it was straight up the worst piece of TV I'd ever seen in my life. I know it's for kids, but that's no excuse to have such an awkward pace and bad writing. I felt that the characters only ever talked at each other and not to each other which really made it hard for me to care or even follow it half the time, the dumb voice filters made it impossible to tell who was speaking half the time, and the world just felt so empty and lifeless. I really can't imagine finding it particularly enjoyable even at a young age.
Don't get me wrong, the last episode was definitely worse than the first three, but as a whole I found the show completely void of any entertainment value :(

I agree. Only somewhat good thing about it was that they finally showed Toa using their actual elemental powers in motion like they were meant to rather than firing a single fire beam once or twice from a sword in one move like we got before…

also half the time i couldn't find gen2 sets and the ones that i did find were insainly more expensive than g1 sets of the same size.

I honestly feel like G2 was made _just_ to end Bionicle so other stuff could be focused on.

As much as I love g2, it was a prime example of wasted potential. 2015's story in the summer should've had SOME struggles with the skull villains and not getting 1 shotted. 2016 was fine. 2017 could've happened two ways: 1. Makuta(Gali too) leaves the shadow realm, brings Okoto to the brink of destruction, Toa get another upgrade to beat Makuta. 2. The toa, Ekimu, and the creatures enter the shadow realm to not only rescue Gali but gang up on Makuta and save the Island. Like I said earlier, I don't want to see the main villain of this line to be one shotted like he was nothing, let there be a struggle between the two forces.
Despite it's many flaws, I still love g2 just as much as g1.

The Protectors were given names later on.

    • @MechBladeStudios
      @MechBladeStudios  3 роки тому +1

Yes, the books and graphic novels did give them names, but the webisodes and JtO never used them. If only Lego had a bunch of name stickers to stick on the Protector sets, they wouldn't have warmed the shelves at the end.

It especially sucks since the Protectors were my favorite sets of 2015, I bought a couple to try out, and ultimately they warmed up on me quickly to the point I got all seven of the Protector sets before I got all of the Toa. LEGO ultimately didn't care, and by this point it's obvious that with the sloppy management of funds from the people in charge with that gold mask competition, and the fact LEGO didn't give the team the resources they needed resulted in something that just felt like it existed to renew the BIONICLE copyright rather than make something that would last and sell well.

It's an interesting premise, now that he's explained at least that much. I wouldn't even personally mind if it wasn't Lego or had toys at all, just a good story. If it had to be a spiritual successor, there's all those preliminary names that we heard about that he could use.

@@MechBladeStudios true, what's important is a good story, an interesting world, and the classic names we all know and love: Takanuva, Tahu, Kopaka, Gali, Lewa, Onua and Pohatu vs the evil Makuta

I hate nameless masks of power in g2. I hate simplified terminology. I hate G2 story. I hate arrogant fanboys who defend G2 and say its superior compared to G1. I hate G2 characters. I hate G2 marketing. I hate nameless villains. I hate G2 prices. I hate 2015 animations. I hate JTO. I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT G2.

And by arrogant fanboys I mean those who say G2 story is better than G1, which makes me cringe and gives me an urge to sell some people infected balls. Heck I even made a joke saying people saying G2 story is better than G1 story are the same people who say Stars are perfect. Thats a joke by the way.

@@juliad9715 thank you for clarifying. And there is one that no one can deny, g2s story and marketing were mediocre compared to g1. But the sets themselves were pretty good. Of course, there were a lot of angry fans saying they were the hero factory build, so therefore trash, and that they weren't as complex. Even though g2 had a lot more parts than most of g1 sets. Say what you will about g2s story, but the sets were worthy of being apart of bionicle
