Lee Perry told us during filming of The Upsetter that Sam Carty came into the studio with a song he wanted to remake and started singing in Hindi. Lee didn't know what the lyrics meant but went with it. Sam did not speak Hindi but this was one of his favorite songs. They laid it over the riddim and it turned out magical. A great example of Lee's genius and his willingness to experiment.
I read in David Katz's GREAT biography of Lee that Sam had Indian heritage - he may not have spoke Hindi himself, but he must've heard this through his parents or grandparents. So awesome!
quite possibly my favourite tune of all time. most wonderful ; ))) only thought to google it a year or so ago and found the hindi background. what a strange story that brought us this work of absolute genius....
translated: As soon as our eyes met, somebody's heart went mad My tale has happened, somebody's tale Don't ask me love's effect, oh, don't ask I took a breath and somebody happened, somebody's lover
One of the most brilliantly psychedelic songs ever, thanks for the background info. I was never sure what language it was sung in, or if it was just in English and Scratch had twisted it into outer space on his mixing desk!
Brilliant... I stumbled across this (a later version but by Lee Scratch Perry) in a 4 album best of..and had a moment of realization when I recognised the song (I speak hindi)...fell in love with this track instantly, and shared it with many friends and family :) FWIW the pronunciation is way off but the rhythm is very recognisable! Thanks Kockos..
Milte hi aankhein dil hua deewana kissi ka (x 2) Afsana mera ban gaya afsana kissi ka Puchho na mohabbat ka asar, haay na puchho Dam bhara mein koyi ho gaya, parwaana kisika Afsaana mera ban gaya, afsaana kisika
love black arc... perry produced this unique warm sound... bird in hand always reminded me of some mantra... now that i learnd that it has indian origins, i know why i had this feeling^^
amazing upload ! never knew what language it was ! the secret of reggae masters like coxone scratch or tubby is that every of them had a BROAD musical culture...
Can you believe that Sam Carty was not given the recognition that he deserved financially and otherwise by Lee Perry. Anyway Sam is Healthy and Wise. Long live Sam Carty.

If you listen very close you can hear cross talk or maybe bleed from the mics telling you the lyrics do in fact go on longer than released. I have heard this version does exist. But I haven't heard it. If it's true Earl16 did this that could be a good clue to find this version.
I'm still speechless. Maybe I can just say, it follows the Good Rule. Good song, good musicians, good instruments, good producer, good history. No wonder this song is ageless.
Not ordinary but a classic bollywood hindi movie song starring one of the greatest actors of the industry..Dilip Kumar and sung by Talat Mahmood and co.
Nice find!! always wondered what it was, i thought it was Perry making up words again!! nice to know... i wonder if there is more of a story to the song or did he just watch the film and decide to do a remake.... cool!
Does anyone know if Scratch did a dub of this or if there anyone did a version of this? This is one of the most awesome riddims to come out of the Black Art, I can't believe there is just only this one version.
heh about as shocking as it was to find out "Closer Together" Junior Murvin is in fact partly a Curtis Mayfield tune "Gypsy Woman". Having good taste in music certainly results in more good music!

Listen Mato Seco - Bird In Hand , Is Awesome,
But Lee Perry is Lee Perry!!!
From Brazil !!!!
I'm still speechless. Maybe I can just say, it follows the Good Rule. Good song, good musicians, good instruments, good producer, good history. No wonder this song is ageless.
So with the Lee Perry sauce it just transformed from a relatively ordinary Indian song to a master dub piece.
