My sister is a bit of a language prodigy... She was able to essentially learn fluent japanese in 9months-1year despite no teaching, never going to japan, no one to talk japanese with, she did it completely from binge watching dubbed anime, listening to j-pop and reading online manga comics, it's madness...

Funny - I have actually thought, you were German, because of your accent in English! You speak very nice and softly, as Germans do in English! Wow! I'm currently learning my 4th language - Japanese - and it's freaking hard, so I really needed this motivation...Thank you for that!

You really motivate me and i benefited a lot from your videos. I want to learn many languages because i love understanding other civilizations. And there is this proverb in my native language (arabic) that says "who ever learn a new language gain a new person".
By the way i speak french, i learned English by myself and tv was my secret too, and i want to learn German this year and I'm going to try your tips.
So thank you sooo much dear Ana.

      @AnaMascara  8 років тому +11

Hi Suwathiga! Thank you for taking the time to write to me. :) I am glad to hear that you are interested in learning a new language! It really depends on what you like most, I love both German and French but I have to admit french grammar was difficult for me - especially verb conjugation. On the other hand, German can look a bit scary - especially when you have to link words together like neunhundertneunundneunzig (the number 999). BUT they are both lovely languages and it really depends on what you want to learn first. Because hey - why not learn both? ^_^

For me, very helpful was learning language by 'topics' - for example, on Christmas I was reading everything about kurisumasu in Japan, learning vocabulary connected with holidays, watching youtube movies about what Tokio looks on christmas day etc. My friends are marrying? Ok, let's fing out how to wish happines to married couple in japanese! It may take a lot of time, but making it fun and 'active' is working for me :)
Of course there is also grammar, writing kanji and other stuff, and you can't avoid it. I must say I'm fortunate because I'm very 'visual', so for grammar I was making colourful tables, flash cards, etc... And I survived until now ;) I'm still learning, tho.

Just came across this, I had always wondered if you speak German because I saw that German language book in a lot of your video backgrounds, haha :) Your German is very good! I have the same issue with French, I had no practice anymore after I finished School and now I struggle with the most simple sentences.. :/ I've learned a few languages over the years, but the only one I'm really good at is English (and of course my mother language, German). Also thumbs up for a fellow Sailor Moon lover!! Love all your videos!! :D Greetings from Germany. - Diana

Ana what do you think if we learn a language but don't have a friend to talk to or we don't have a language environment, so we can forget this language quickly. So what would you recommend to do to keep remembering the languages you've learned? I personally know 3 languages( using them daily) and planing to study two more. But I'm scared that whatever I study I will forget because I'm not using the specific language in daily life.

I really don't understand the whole watching movies to learn a language. What do you do? Do you listen to them and connect what they're saying with the subtitles, and then use them as phrases? I can see how that wouldn't teach you grammar, but I can also see how that might teach you intonation. I really like the book idea, I will have to try that out!

Justus Whittington I learned speaking English by watching a lots of cartoons and movies and I highly encourage you to do it too. It helped me a lot and I'm sure it'll help you too.
Watching movies (by the language of your choice) helps you to learn to speak and it is a very good practice for your ears!
Seriously you should try this method. It works very well and the results are promising.

Where are you from and where do you currently live? I totally understand how feel about losing a language, I have the same problem with Turkish. I'm trying to get it back by using an app called "Duolingo" and I highly recommend it for like "remembering" a language, but not for learning a language without any basic grammar knowledge.
btw Rammstein is awesome, one my favorite bands and I listened to it before doing the Goethe B2 test, its a great way to learn vocabulary and such.

On my opinion the best way to learn any language is to have constant speaking practice. In such case the best way is to find a tutor and native speakers. I can advise preply.com/de/Paris/deutsch-Nachhilfe for searching native speaking tutors. All other methods you can use as aditional way to gain new knowledge and practice already completed material.

I thought you were Italian-Canadian, specially with that accent lol; kinda reminds me the people from Saint-Leonard.

Ana Mascara Bonjour Ana. I am French. I am a language hoarder. I am still practicing my English. And since a few months now I have started to learn limbă română. This language has completely touched my heart since 2 years now. I really want to visit this beautiful country one day. I bought a bunch of reading books, lesson books, exercises books ( limbă română pentru străinii). I plan to order a real Romanian dictionary like a ''Dicționar Explicativ în limbă română''. I live in France, maybe you might tell me where I could order such a dictionary. Mulțumesc.
