I was there too saw about 80 shows since 81. Jerry looks great. They sound great. Set list was primo. What more could a head want from Philly in a show. Glad we were there to enjoy it. Love peace and happiness. Rip boys. See you on the other side. I got some more roads to explore here first. Ill find the lost sailor. And see the girl at the station with the soldier.maybe we will survive.
I went to a concert at the First Union/Wachovia/First Union Center (whatever the hell it was called at the time haha) and they had just knocked the first big hole in the side of the Spectrum. Such a cool building.. was sad to see it go
This was a super show for me. Once I heard the first notes ok Iko, I turned to my friend (his first show) and told him to hold on tight, it's goin' to be a bumpy ride!
Happy 71st birthday to Mickey Hart! 26 years ago I was at this show with a backstage pass. During set break the band had two big tables with cakes and pastries set out backstage to celebrate Mickey's birthday. I ate my cake sitting with Owsley. A positive memory for this date. Thank you, voodoonola!!
As somebody who was around the Dead all my life but not really a fan until the early 90s, and a newly-confirmed Deadhead during muh corona shutdown, I find the comments and stories almost as enjoyable as the music itself. Pig, Keith, Brent, Jerry , Vince, Barlow and Hunter are truly the grateful dead now.
Was handed an open bottle of Heineken in the parking lot by a guy I worked with named Fat Earl. Started 'Feeling like a Stranger' about an hour later. Couldn't drive my car after show. I had my teenage step daughter and a friend with me [their 1st show] My stepdaughter learned how to drive a 4 speed VW that night while I watched flying deer on the expressway to the jersey Shore. Great memories , we still laugh about it
Iv'e been there um, my great friends wife 8mo's preggies had to takek over the wheels my most wonderful lady was so upset as we pulled off 76 W back to Hbg, PA., We made it home safely, most impottant partl
I was mourning the death of Hillel Slovak, when Mick took me to see a band I knew not, and filled my brain with microscopic dandies never yet tasted. Found myself space-dancing in the hallway with Swublix the cat, and probably a few of you. You know who you are. The following run at MSG blew me away forever. You understand.
On my way to this show, "got busted for smiling, on a cloudy day", still made it to shows, Best time of my life, "The sun was screaming, "Hey You"!!!! Love you, Jerry.
This was the greatest! I jammed to this just now! Such a joy to have these ultra clear shows after all these years. . . .I m like a kid in a Candy Shop
Had tickets. Wanted to go in. It was a hit day and ended up wandering the park around the Naval Hospital. May have had some extra help. Even had an extra ticket hoping to sell. Ended up giving some miracles and walking to 30th street station! It was too confining to sit in Spectrum for me that day. Two cure Philly girls saw the show instead. Philly was an awesome place to see the Dead. Sure hope it was their first show!
Great show! My friend Andy and I scored tickets for it 2 nights before, when we couldn't get into that one. Getting to see and hear Scarlet-Fire was a highlight. 26 years ago today.
wow, yes so many props to you as always, I was at this show, and this run, Th Spectrum Rocks !! (we probably ran into each other back in those days..).. so wierd only 400 views... man people are missing out.. Thanks again for making me feel like a kid again !!! Miss you Jer - Brent.
Wow I can't believe I never realized 9 / 11 / 88 This was my very 1st show . My 16 year old self would go on to many many more . Thanks so much for this !! and Tons of ❤ from Philadelphia !!
An incredibly beautiful 4 show run. 9/8&9 off Saturday 9/11&12. The day off was one that Philly still talks about. An open air vending/party market across from The Spectrum at "The Lakes". Thousands of heads enjoying the beautiful weather and each other with virtually no hassles from the police. Best set of music was 1st night, 1st set which features my all time favorite Shakedown and the most beautiful To Lay Me Down I have ever heard. Find it :-)
Was camped out in that park by the lakes with a tribe of heads from SUNY Fredonia! Lived there a whole week with showing up the day before and leaving the day after the shows. I'll never forget arriving that day prior to the shows and seeing the Rainbow Family have there tipi's set up in the field near the lake and thinking, "this is going to be special!" And, I have to be honest and say, as fun as the scene was, it was also nitrous hell too! Way too many people getting hurt and hurting others from hippie crack. My first time meeting the "twelve tribes of Israel" cult as well who were both helping people with medical aid, food, as well as brain washing them into joining their 'community'. :O What a long strange trip...
Wow, this makes me soooooo happy. Really needed this. Had a bum day yesterday, as we are probably all having from time to time. Thanks again. This show rocked & still rocks. Quality is outstanding. Spectrum Daze.
Just remembered I was on the floor from Scarlet on through. Was screaming US Blues for the encore until my voice went. Baby Blue is fine by me. Again my mind was blown. Like a seasick sailor rowing home.
No doubt that this show was in the zone of our Makers favorite choir. People joining hand and hand... well the music plays the band ..Lord they're setting us on fire..God bless you all...
Iko Iko feel like a Franklin's little red Peggy-o.... Memphis Tennessee Promised Land? Is this a practical joke? Am I dreaming? Is this heaven? This set list points to heaven. Massive. Thank u
This show remembered me how I came to be embodied here. Can't say it was pretty. Don't come back guys. Come to Grateful Dead heaven and stay. It's a real place. He came here to get you. Please come. And- shortest drums ever and shortest space ever and only time have heard an echo on Stella. 9-11-88- come home guys. He wants you to come home.
I didn't originally buy tickets to these four shows, but I had a friend (not a Deadhead) who could score tickets to anything and when I asked him to find me tickets thought he had let me down. He said, "Sorry man, I was only able to find tickets for one night. I found 8 seats in the 7th row for Sept 11." I was like, "HOLY SHIT" so I bought them all and traded out for the other three shows and a night at MSG. I kept the aisle seat and it wasn't until "Baby Blue" ended that I recognized all the people I had traded with. They just had that "Oh my fucking God!" look on their faces. Apparently, the fact that they were 7th row seats never came up during the trading process.
I was at this show and completely out of my mind...the stage was nothing more than lights emitting sound; couldn't make out if anyone was actually on it or not. I started to come through during Fire. Sweet, sweet ride!
I miss them all so much for getting to know them all so well as I ran the parties for the boys & who I let come in ,I was part of the dead family !❤️🐰🌹🐇
I saw a very funny interview with the band, where people could ask them anything, and someone asked "Jerry, who designs your wardrobe? " Jerry and all of them look at each other, and sort of laugh, and then, ..Bobby chimes right in, and says "I do"....It's just funny...I LOVE THIS BAND .there is no other band on the Planet like this.....The only thing that comes close is "Further".....
And they played the civic center again in 84. Jerry looked really bad , but they were some great shows. I am so happy he got healthy and gave us many more years.
I was 18-21 yrs old during those 1988-1991 face melting shows and remember thinking “music can never sound better than this”, and to this day, to me, I was correct.
This was my last Dead Show . Drove 5 friends up from the shore . We sat all the way in the back , center stage , in the middle of upper level . The view , the sound , the show . Outstanding . Did 30 plus shows of various groups at the Spectrum so close to seeing 80 different bands over the years . The Dead , PInk Floyd & ELO at the top .

Yeah Philly was awesome. Saw maybe 1/2 dozen shows there in the 80's and they always rocked. My favorite of all the large hockey arenas, though Hartford was a close second, and Hartford had better sound. The energy at these arenas were like the small venues like Hampton and Portland
I feel like people who thumbs down amazing videos like this are actually automated bots screwing with us or something. What great show. Is Brent actually superceding Keith and Pigpen as my favorite Dead keyboardist? Never thought I'd say that.
This is ‘hot as a pistol,’ my fellow heads and new schoolers! Wake up. If your not shedding a tear on this throwing stones then shame on you, and this band maybe ain’t really your thing
I'm not a big Dead fan. This was the second or third show I attended. Not even sure why I went. I actually liked their studio material better than their live jams. Yes, I know, it's blasphemy. Back then, I had really long hair, a beard and I smoked weed all day every day, did acid occasionally and attended hundreds of rock concerts. People I met automatically assumed that I was a " Dead - Head. " I eventually stopped explaining my feelings and let them think that. For me, Pink Floyd was always my favorite band and more suited to my weed habit and acid trips. I simply can find no comparison. Truth is, I had more fun hanging out in the parking lot with all the people than inside the show itself. On the way to this particular concert, we ran out of weed. I remember there being a bad " drought " at the time. I rarely was without smoke, so that was a real bummer. We were sitting in the gridlocked traffic waiting to get off I -95 onto the Broad Street exit and the car ahead of us had a bong going. So I got up the courage to walk up and ask if they would sell us some. They said that were almost out as well, so no good. They said, " Don't you know there's a drought right now ? " Uh, yeah that's WHY I'm bothering a stranger ! So we get there and browsed the usual fan vendor setup. We tried to sniff out some herb, but everyone was pretty tight. Then one guy who was selling homemade tie - dyed t - shirts sold us a small baggy at a really inflated price. Not much of a choice. We went back to the car to get some papers. We rolled one up, lit up and nothing. We did this FOUR more times, getting nothing but headaches. We obviously had been ripped off by one of " Jerry's Kids. " So much for ' peace, love and kindness ' that the faithful like to preach ! We went back to kick this guy's ass and he had packed up and left. No offense to the older fans, but at that time it was hip for 18 - 20 year old college kids to be into The Dead. With all their materialistic lifestyles, it seemed a bit hypocritical. I was a true " hippie " and here were all these posers. I always wondered what the band thought of this. I know it kept them rolling in the money, but it seems like their message was lost on the newer generation. So I endured a dreadfully long, ultra - boring show with a headache and no buzz. Anyway, at the next show, years later, I only hung out in the parking lot and I found a baggy of good weed someone had lost and shared it with my friends. I guess that made up for the time before. I was actually looking for one of the Pink Floyd shows when this one came up in the search. I thought maybe I would see myself in the audience, but it looks like only the band was filmed. Oh, well.
Gotta admit shit started getting real sketchy round 88. Nitrous, beat tabs, etc. Best to know who getting from, but I also understand, a drought is a drought no doubt.
do you honestly need drugs to enjoy music? this story made me feel extremely sorry for you. I would give almost anything to have been at the so-called "worst" Dead show or JG show, even if I had to be sober. sorry but you just come off as lacking gratitude and depth as an individual.
@@ReedRosson1987 Well maybe if I had you as my personal life guru, I would be more like you and less like me. That would suck. How about not being such a buzz kill ?
Man he butchered foolish heart!!! You were clean at this junction Jerry!!! I love a good foolish heart but that one hurt my ears!! Where was his lead on the song. He usually forgets words, not chords?
such a messed up comment. I bet even know what the best foolish heart is. go back and listen again. it was lovely. lots of passion at the end. what are you rambling on about
I love Foolish Heart, but this version sounded a bit labored. Plus in '88, FH and Victim Or The Crime hadn't been released yet. Hence the lack of reaction from the audience.

We love you baby ~Deadheads
do you honestly need drugs to enjoy music? this story made me feel extremely sorry for you.

Mick's birthday!
Man he butchered foolish heart!!! You were clean at this junction Jerry!!! I love a good foolish heart but that one hurt my ears!! Where was his lead on the song. He usually forgets words, not chords?
such a messed up comment. I bet even know what the best foolish heart is. go back and listen again. it was lovely. lots of passion at the end. what are you rambling on about
Fairly early version? Check out 7/10/89.
I love Foolish Heart, but this version sounded a bit labored. Plus in '88, FH and Victim Or The Crime hadn't been released yet. Hence the lack of reaction from the audience.
Some fool near me at the show said Foolish Heart was called Heavens Fool
This was the 10th of 87 Foolish Hearts.
I thought it was intricate and beautiful. ❤
