    Thank you very much for another excellent video. Do you know any complete tutorial or maybe a video course to learn how to process using Siril for someone who has never processed any image and is new to astrophotography? I am very interested in learning because I have a dwarf2 that I haven’t used yet due to bad weather conditions, and I will soon also receive a seestar. My goal is to start in astrophotography, but specifically, I am very interested in learning how to process with free tools.

    Good video Scott! My Seestar will be here next week so will run both D2 and S50. From what I gather you can't run both from same tablet? I think they both have their plus and minuses. D2 for larger wider field and S50 for smaller tighter fields. I need to see the Helix Neb on the Seestar, not sure if I can get it here! Thanks again

    I think you demonstrate why owning both are great and both worth owning, as wide field comes in handy. With Bin 1X1 I can increase image scale with cropping and lose less detail which comes in handy for smaller objects which can be harder to see in Dwarf 2

  • @denodan

    The crab Nebula using Binning 1X1 will improve your image scale as it will allow more cropping without detail lose

    Another excellent video. Your presentation and delivery are superb.
    Questions.
    I have purchased both. The Seestar is definitely more polished and refined. The Dwarf 2 much more clunky in its interface. I am using iOS on both. The iPhone app crashes and locks up frequently on the D2. Are you using android or iOS? You also mentioned the Stellarium app. Did it load the settings automatically or did you input them manually in the D2?

  • @MrCornweda
    @MrCornweda 8 місяців тому

    Good job Scott! Definitely for small targets the larger aperture of the Seestar brings out more detail. The Wizard nebula is a difficult target in light polluted skies. I am surprised how well both telescopes did on the Wizard nebula. The region of the Elephant Trunk nebula has a large amount of nebulosity, which is only visible in the Dwarf II image. Both telescope need dithering in their own software. The Seestar really needs to be able to be polar aligned. If the Seestar had dithering and polar alignment, it would be a slam dunk at that price point.

    • @mercury7
      @mercury7 8 місяців тому +1

      Dwarf does not really have advanced image processing yet, once they get to the stage of frame rejection and dithering that system should improve dramatically, they are just now introducing 1x1 binning which will give them 8mp on target, so the aperture should become the biggest limiting factor. But today seestar is taking better photos than dwarf…. Dwarf owners have a while to wait yet before that software matures

    The S50 and Vesper telescopes can display red and blue stars in unprocessed images. Do you know why this isn't achieved with the Dwarf II? Is it due to the sensor or the small aperture?

      The biggest difference between the two will be software, Vaonis has a pretty huge advantage with their CovalENS algorithm for flexibility of what you can image, as far as hardware they are same aperture and using same chip so the actual images without covslENS will be similar

    • @ScottCastrophotography

    • @mercury7
      @mercury7 8 місяців тому

      @@ScottCastrophotography they would be stupid if they were not working on it but it is patented, but Vaonis is moving on with Vespera pro so zwo would still have to release another scope to compete with that

    • @luboinchina3013

      Actually I think that they (ZWO) are already working on something more advanced so they will not add EQ mode to this one. I was actually Surprised that they gave it name and S50. If they only want to have one version, they would just call it SeeSTAR. I guess SeeSTAR 70/80 Pro/EQ , Something is cooking there in their development department. I mean, can you imagine having money, factory, software and people to create astronomy gear? What would YOU (astrophotography geek) create?

    As you show, achieving accurate polar alignment on the Dwarf is very difficult, and with its large FoV is not really necessary on most DSOs. I also notice that you didn’t take any Astro Darks on the Dwarf before the session, or how you decided what exposure or gain to use.
    You then threw away 22% of the Seestar data when you clipped the black point - why? And you’re better off doing noise reduction before you stretch.

    • @ScottCastrophotography
      @ScottCastrophotography  8 місяців тому

      Dark frames had been taken prior to setup and polar alignment. Typically polar alignment with dwarf ii is very easy i just got confused with the stars and realized my mistake afterwards. Thanks for the tip on noise reduction. I always set my dwarf ii paramaters at 100 gain and 15s for nebula to allow more photons to reach the sensor. And i had to clip the black point unfortunately because if i didnt background was going to be too bright for my liking. Its all up to preference.

    You would enjoy covalENS so much, if you ever get the opportunity to try a vespera you should, it would check your boxes of fov and detail without field rotation,, also the 1x1 binning in Astro mode is in the new dwarf beta… that may bring out more detail but the main culprit remains aperture… the 1x1 images do look substantially better to my eyes though. Seestar seems to be doing great but that fov hurts it more than anything else I can see…. If their mosaic mode ends up just being a stitch program then it really would take too long to make it useful…. People would shorten their exposures too much, after all an hour of data stitched would take 4hrs and that does not even include the dithering overhead

    • @ScottCastrophotography
      @ScottCastrophotography  8 місяців тому

      What is covalENS?

    • @mercury7
      @mercury7 8 місяців тому

      @@ScottCastrophotography sorry, I thought you knew that, it’s Vaonis name for their mosaic algorythm, it moves the arm between exposures and builds the image from the inside out,kind of a dithering with a few percent overlap, so you can select whatever fov you want between sensor size and 8mp…. It’s pretty neat, I think you would love that feature. If you select something large like 2.6 x2.6 degrees it takes about an hr to expose the whole frame, then it continues to add frames for as long as you want to improve detail and noise reduction

    • @ScottCastrophotography

    • @mercury7
      @mercury7 8 місяців тому +1

      @@ScottCastrophotography it’s 200mm instead of 250mm so I think seestar might have an edge on tiny objects like the crab simply because more of the pixels cover the target, however the flexibility of Vespera with covalENS remains unmatched, they have announced a pro version coming in May that has a larger 12mp sensor that we are looking forward to, 32mp in CovalENS mode…. Exciting time for robotics…. I imagine with the success of the seestar s50 they will have a follow on also. These more capable systems are pricy though so it’s kind of a different market, Vespera is 1500 and vespera pro is 2k preorder
