He´s right! Or it is an official language or not ! Our German EU MP´s waste a lot of money when they move to Berlin from regions bordering Strasbourg or Belgium and travel to do their EU job. The EU administration is wasting millions for having two capitals in Strasbourg and Brussels. The EU premises cost billions. The EU spends millions on secretaries, questionable information offices, projects etc ... So they should be able to afford a translator for an official language ! By the way: most, but not all Maltese speak English well (some elderly in the villages, fishermen etc. don´t).
There are some very proficient speakers of English among the Maltese people. But not many. From what I know most speak some English with a very strong Maltese accent. Which is odd, because I am told it is rare to find a Maltese person who speaks Maltese with no effort at all. What this means is that most Maltese do not have a strong language at their disposal. The situation has been allowed to deteriorate to a point where the average Maltese does not have an adequate grasp of either English or Maltese. A people without a language has a rough time.
love it !! To the point , not to mention their vulgar swearing , the maltese have an elite called tal pepe , they feel that if they speak english they will be superior to the ones from tal rahal , i went to St Edwards College were we were not allowed to speak in Maltese , i left that place with very poor maltese writing and reading skills , my brother went to a government can hardly speak anything , The Island is so small but it is sooooooo fucked up . there is so much wrong about that island that . maybe one day i will write a book about it , from a haters point of view , because everything that befalls on malta it deserves for a simple reason , ITS PEOPLE .
Good for Mr. Muscat, it is about time that the Maltese and the Maltese government speak up. Glad that Mr. Muscat refused to continue. The EU should apologize for this blunder. Maybe Malta should follow the way the Quebec Government in Canada. Recently the Quebec Government gave the refugees an six months ultimatum to learn the French language. This had something to do with the French language and migrants who couldn't speak French and interpreters were required. As a Maltese-Canadian citizen living in a supposedly democratic bi-lingual country for the past sixty years, the Maltese-Canadian community is just a drop in the bucket, no recognition. Part of the problem in Malta is, not enough Maltese speak their native language, switching back and forth Maltese/English. Maltese should be proud of their language, I am. For foreigners It's not an easy language to speak and write, but it could be learned.
But his administration find it unwilling to get foreigners who sought to learn Maltese any classes or information to the foreigners to learn their second of their two official recognized language. (English/Maltese) Maltese when they’re speaking or scheming about a non national. English when they’re speaking or scheming with or to a non national.
There should be more people having the guts that he had and show to the EU commeties that even if we are a small country we have the right that every big country has
The EU should move to uniting all members under a common language, this is not being disrespectful to ones heritage but being practical and not sticking to Babylonian times just because we can or to try and satisfy all member states by make it their legal right.

Maltese is similar to Lebanese Because that is where the original countrymen emigrated from. Back then it was called Phoenicia and is a mixture between Syrian and Aramaic.
Thank you. Maltese is a dialect of *Arabic* but heavily polluted with Italian. There is also pollution (mostly French) in some other *Arabic* dialects like Tunisian and Algerian but at the end of the day *WE ARE ALL ARABS!*

IT DOESN'T! Malta has *NEVER* had its own language. That's just a myth. *We* basically speak a dialect of *ARABIC* similar to Tunisian (but with Italian pollution) as *we* are descended from *Arabs* garrisons ourselves. Our Arabic dialect is written in an adapted Latin script. Malta is an *ARAB* country. It has always been *ARABIC* and it is *ARABIC* today!

@simon farrugia, theatrics??? Joeseph muscatt stood up and told it how it is. I think constituents probably do have a right to be addressed in their mother tongue, as in this particular instance. That said, perhaps a slight roll back on document translation is needed, given that the EU spends close to one billion euros on language accommodation, and many of the hundreds of thousands of documents are cast aside anyway. Perhaps something to be looked into.

The reason may be valid but every member using its own language is such a waste of tax payers’ money. There is no common first language among member states so to save time and money all debates/meetings/summits should be made in English, unless they cannot speak English [in which case a translator will be appointed] as English as this is the most commonly used and studied second language.

He reacted in that way because he wants the best for our country, Suddenly all of the world is against us because we're different, why is this?.
Malta became rich through the EU, it was this asshole who didn't want Malta to join, and when backstage they told him that there wasn't a translator he performed his show... nothing to do with being a patriot - he is the most corrupt Malta ever had.
And what language should that be? Who should be the lucky ones who get to retain their language? And what would you do when the languages starts to drift more and more appart. It's almost impossible for a language with more than million speakers to not have dialects or sociolects. For a language with 7 billion speakers it would be beyond impossible. Just take Glaswegian English and compare it to an English dialect from Nigeria? The only thing that links them together is the written form.
I do agree with JM, but I'don't like the way he delivered his message. He could just told them that he is not going to deliver his speech before a translator is present. There was no need of theatrics, I don' like his attitude at all.

By the way: most, but not all Maltese speak English well (some elderly in the villages, fishermen etc. don´t).
This video made maltese Gahan’s love this corrupt person
I always recognize you like in this post: a strong man with a dignity and a frankness too.🙂
Maltese is an official language of the EU now, iirc.

Our Arabic dialect is written in an adapted Latin script. Malta is an *ARAB* country. It has always been *ARABIC* and it is *ARABIC* today!

It is hard to like politics sometimes.
