    Great job on the Intrepid!! I didn’t know that such a detailed model of my old ship existed. I served aboard her during the Vietnam war in 1968/69. I was a radarman and worked in the Combat Information Center. Part of my duties was standing lookout above the navigation bridge behind that row of windows. I’m a long-time modeler and am currently building a wooden scratch-build Mississippi side wheeler steam packet, my most ambitious project to date. I’m definitely going to purchase this kit and will value your input. You constructed a beautiful model and your weathering is superb.

      Thank you for your service Sir! I visited Intrepid last October and enjoyed visiting with her many sailors who volunteered there. I walked through the bridge 3 times--climbing those steep stairs in the island and being on the bridge was very exciting to me. I just built a $25 Atlantis kit of Ticonderoga (CV14) and finished it as Intrepid CV11 using this video and historic photos as a budget option to the $200 Trumpeter kit.

    GREAT JOB, James! The photoetch railings came out extremely well. The U.S. national insignia (Stars and Bars) always has the point of the star facing up on vertical surfaces and forward on the horizontal ones. The insignia on the left upper wings of the F-8 Crusaders are too far inboard. They would be positioned over the wingfold. As far as I know, there has never been an operational, all black photo reconnaissance aircraft of any kind employed by the USN. I don't believe the Navy employed the Skywarrior in a recon role. In addition to their primary role as a heavy attack aircraft, A-3s also served deployed airwings as aerial tankers (KA-3) and electronic warfare (EA-3) platforms. Crusaders served as photo recon aircraft (RF-8) as the fighters of the type were eventually phased out of service. Navy RF-8s played an important role in the aerial reconnaissance missions over Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of 1962.

      Hi Lawrence, thanks for all the feedback. I realised too late about the insignia being upside down, but if you watch again you can see at least my consistency! Here's a link to the Black Sky Warrior reference photo I found, just keep scrolling down. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_A-3_Skywarrior?wprov=sfla1

    Hi, Beautiful work. I served on Intrepid in 1969-71 in 1st Division as a Boatswains mate. I noticed the weathering on the portholes across the bow. This was the forward steering compartment. If the bridge was disabled you could control the ship from there. One of my jobs was to keep the bow free from rust. we Never allowed rust build up around those portholes. If you want to add a interesting touch, the bull nose in the centerline of the bow was painted BLUE in 1971 when we crossed the Arctic Circle. It was painted over after she was decommissioned. I do have a question about the center line elevator. It is in an odd shape in your pictures. It is square on the ship. Did the manufacturer mold it or did you make that shape with paint? Again a wonderful job. I have been onboard hundreds of times since the museum opened since I am a member of the Former Crew Members Association and am originally from NYC. Thank you.

      I was wrong about the forward elevator. Just saw a picture of the flight with the elevator down and it is the same shape as the model.

      1/350 Hercules is avaliable at L´Arsenal made of resin and PE. But since i am working on their resin made Tracker, Tracer, Neptune, Crusader and Skyhawk, i am not too happy about their quality. The resin is often made too thin or did not even fill the form, a lot of parts are bent, there are no decals and they are missing proper instructions.

    How do you get on the flight deck the white dots. I have tried many times with sticks and tip them on the deck but they are not equal

      I gave the entire flight deck a light grey wash, easy to apply and works every time!

    • @JJModelMaking
      @JJModelMaking  4 роки тому

      I'd say Trumpeter would be your best bet but ultimately it depends on which ship you'd like to build. What are you thinking of?
