In a Brilliant Light: Van Gogh in Arles, 1984 | From the Vaults

- Near the end of his life, Vincent van Gogh moved from Paris to the city of Arles in southeastern France, where he experienced the most productive period of his artistic career. During his 444 days there, he completed over two hundred paintings and one hundred drawings inspired by the region’s light, wildlife, and inhabitants. This film presents the stories behind many beloved works alongside beautiful footage of daily life in Provence, as well as glimpses of rarely seen canvases held in private collections. Narrated by Edward Herrmann.
As part of The Met’s 150th anniversary in 2020, each month we will release three to four films from the Museum’s extensive moving-image archive, which comprises over 1,500 films, both made and collected by the Museum, from the 1920s onward. This includes rarely seen artist profiles and documentaries, as well as process films about art-making techniques and behind-the-scenes footage of the Museum.

Vincent was a man who was ahead of his time. After reading his letters to his brother Theo I realized what a brilliant, well read, spiritual and deeply thoughtful man he was. How sad that he had to struggle with serious physical and mental illness! The world is a better place because he lived for a brief 37 years and chose to sketch, paint and write about what he saw and felt.
I love what you wrote about Van Gogh.💛 I love that you wrote the world is a better place because of his choice to paint and sketch. ♥️ 🎨 ✍️
A superior documentary - the way they used to make 'em!

It was GREAT. GREAT LIKE A TIGER 🐅
Profound artist. A visionary, indeed. Feelingly soul and a deeply thinking man. Thought provoking paintings. Colourful palate, beautiful nature, and his insightful nature provoked him. And he painted. Brilliant.
Was not sure I was going to watch this. Than hearing Edward Herrmann' s voice whom I've always thought had the perfect voice for narration. I'd give it a go. Before long I had it playing on a high-def large screen. Just sat back and let it flow. Of course, I had to play Don McClean's "Vinvent". Seems fitting somehow. Many thanks. :)
A superior art documentary which concentrates acutely on the artists style as he travels from Brabant in the North to Arles in the South. Bravo!
Excellent doc, Thanks!
South of France was seemingly a beautiful place. I remember watching a film entitled Two For The Road of which starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney long ago in 1996. They filmed a lot within this area back in the '60s. So, I could only imagine how beautiful the unadultered views it held during Van Gogh's era! It was one of those French-themed films I saw in AV classes. All of my classmates in Malaysia were required to have basic La Francais for school exam by the end of year. I enjoyed it!
Valiosísimo trabajo!!
Such brush work!
🎨

VvG was not a creature. He was the Creative.
Who is ‘Van Go’ ?
10:02 why would you zoom on on the poor woman sneezing?!?!? And leave it in through editing process! 🤪
It's symbolic of Van Gogh's struggles and ultimate triumphs during his short story in Arles, pretty heady stuff but these old documentaries are chock full 'em.
A proof of how bad parenting can ruin a child's life
11:17 lol
I noticed this too. Love how the camera was casually zoomed in and then slowly zoomed out. 😂🤣
he painted many more paintings after the crows, he moved from Arles up near Paris for a while, there he shot himself.
A letter to my brother theo poem
Why no starry night ?
He painted that in Saint Remy not Arles
The sunflowers painting shown is thought to be a fake, there are mistakes, one is a leaf has a stem going through it rather than attached normally, it’s the painting currently in Japan.
It doesn't really matter. It emerges from his vision, and is loved for that anyway.
Not sayin' but sayin' maybe things got rough between Goghan and Vincent had something to do with how long a pregnancy takes since Gaughan was a playa.
Art collecting isn't based on anything real or scientific.
Just a bunch of wealthy people who lack the talent create anything of their own.
The art is GREAT. GREAT LIKE A TIGER 🐅
TERRIBLE reproduction...does disservice to the art and the artist by giving a false impression of the works...
