- all this happened in 25 minutes. it went on for another 2 hours.the corp of engineers let water out of our lake sidney lanier via the buford dam. where does it go??? well it produces power several times. then it goes on down to alabama and also florida for the "endangered mussels" all of this is in the court system and being challenged. until last year we had not had a full lake in over 3 years!
i live in atlanta, so a few days ago it was hot me and some buddys jump the fence by the highway, go down to the hooch and swim were at the part very close to the water treatment plant we didnt think shit about it but when we got in the water my friend almost got sucked up by this big giant pipe under the water...it was very very scary....
omg. Plus, I can't bring myself to ever swim in the hooch, because of all the dead animal bodies I've seen floating down it. Smellyyy and grosss body tissues
Beautiful place, was that way down yonder on the Chattahoochee?
Not really, the other side of the dam from the lake!
The siren goes off every 5 mins
So it rises what, a number of feet? I'm sure that downstream in the areas that aren't as wide, it probably gets much deeper and covers the rocks that you can walk out on.
There are sirens down stream also, it raised a lot more than a couple of feet that day. Guess it depends oon how much water is released.
I tend to kayak about 50-60 miles south of this dam. Is it still just as dangerous or is there barely a difference?
It's not an issue 50 miles downstream. You won't even notice a difference because you are on the other side of Morgan Falls.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 that's what I was saying. I was asking if it was different up near the dam.
@@ChristelVinot yes it is very different up near the bottom of the Buford Dam. For one thing the water up there is always frigid no matter how hot it is outside or whether they have recently released water. For another the larger water releases can make for some pretty intense rapids and currents.
Short version is if you are putting in within 5 miles of the bottom of Buford Damn it is very wise to make sure you check the water release schedule before you do your trip. And when I say check, I mean check the info right before you are ready to go to down to the river's edge and put in. A canoe and kayak company used to rent boats for trips below the dam until they were sued into bankruptcy for not providing enough instruction to one of their renters who unfortunately fell in and drowned.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 5 miles? good to know, thanks!
Thanks for sharing. First time I've heard or seen such a release!
people,an fishermen,an dumb rafters an kids have died on this very cold river an water in the mid to upper 40,s bone chilling temperature takes a long time to warm up,an will kill you,hypothermia....im amazed at the signs everywhere,an people are still dumb,an bring there dumb dogs an beer, etc..so sad............
looks like there was plenty of water before they made a flood
There’s a constant flow of water from the lake into the river. It’s just not that harsh. Because of the demands from Alabama and Florida, a certain amount of water had to be let out each day along with the normal expected amount of water within the reservoir. During the summer, water release times are set during the night because of water activities. During the winter, of course, there’s much less activity on the river and lake so times will be changed to during the day.
We were trout fishing upstream of Bowmans island, just below the Dam.
Got on a run hitting trout after trout- practically every cast . Heard the siren for the first time and thought-“How bad could it be?” Barely got out in time, swear to god I’d probably have drowned. Waders with no life jacket . That shit was no joke!
What warning is there for deaf people? None? That figures.
@Ianssouthern yea the water treatment plant pulls water for treatmentr or something, its just scary.
The water rise is no joke! further downstream (less than a mile ) you can't hear the sirens so you better keep your eye on the time and the water as soon as you start seeing trash( twigs, leaves, etc.) in the water or muddy clumps of bubbles get out!
Thanks, I have several one is called Spring Peepers" and I have a swamp one as well that was near the river, plus other videos. Anyway can't beat Chattahoochee for great nature shots! Keep 'em coming.
i bet that waters cold from being at the bottom of that lake
Oh HELL YEAH IT IS!!! Even when there has not been a recent water release water on that section of the Hooch is ALWAYS cold even on the hottest summer days. I can remember paddling below the dam and hanging my feet over the edge of the boat to cool off but not being able to keep my feet in the water because it was freakin cold!
That water being released is freezing cold! I'd been there trout fishing.
Save some for me!
@masterbate23 Glad you all made it out OK. I have never went swimming there but have floated down a good piece of it.
Hi neighbor looks like we are filming in the same section of the Chattahoochee. Good job!
That's kinda scary were did you hear that announcer BTW?
yes it was raining. so i got under the cover of some trees never expecting the water to rise as quickly as it did.
