I remember watching that Popeye episode where Popeye and bluto were competing with their restaurants with some random dude that was hungry. Bluto replaced the beans the guy asked for with Mexican jumping beans. Just a random thought.
My brother would have spread them on the ground and then stepped on them until they looked like a broken glass or something, (He didn't actually do that, but he would have if he ever saw them)
I’m 58 and had “Mexican jumping beans” numerous times from age 5 to 10. I learned the reason they jump is due to them containing larvae at around age 8. Back then you could buy them in nearly any drug or department store.
I was just thinking about Mexican jumping beans yesterday! I always love learning about new things, but it’s been a long time since my parents got me some of these on our travels!
Yeah I also remember getting them as a souvenir on vacation as a kid. They definitely came in a plastic , clear small box that latched closed . The thing is I’m positive my mother didn’t know something was living in them . I’m sure we all lost them at some point. Definitely never opened them and Absolutely had no idea something was living inside . I’m sure they never even had a chance at hatching since we didn’t have a clue what made them jump ..??
My mom and grandma would buy these for me and a girl we baby sat.... I was deathly terrified of these when I was 5...i had 3 in my room and I would stare at them like they owed me something... Now I find em sorta cool
When I taught, I always had these in our science center in our classroom. One year, I had a janitor who was a little special. He was fixing to vacuum under my center when he heard them rattling in their plastic clear container and freaked the heck out, plus he was alone in the building. The next morning he was waiting on me at my door to show me, like they were deadly or something. Lol He had never seen them before. 🍎
They sold these in the 80’s at a store in Chicago. The store was called McCoroy’s. I don’t know if anyone remembers that name but it was a big retailer back in the day.
As far as I can tell Cydia deshaisiana is not listed as invasive. I believe they’re not actually considered invasive due to their reliance on plants that are endemic to their native habitat. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were able to become invasive by feeding on related plants somewhere in the U.S. that has a similar climate but I can’t really find any info on that.
My Aunt and Uncle lived close to the border and when I was a little girl we would visit and spend a day in one of the border towns. My favorite purchase was the Mexican Jumping Beans!
I think they have little moth larvae inside of them. And when you put them near heat they flick the bottom of the bean with their rear, causing it to jump to a colder place❤❤❤
My aunt would bring these from a convenient store she found them at alot to us in a little tin. She kept her own in plastic drawers with dried oatmeal for them to sit in. They were so cool to watch
I did not know that I had never seen a Mexican jumping Bean and I didn't know they would have to find shelter or that there was Marvin in it that would turn into a butterfly so thanks for the information❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

So did I. When I was a kid, they used to sell them to you as" Mexican jumping beans". There 3 or 4 in a little see-through box so you could watch them jump.
