Huge thanks!
Thank you! I love Ribbon mics. In a digital world they really warm things up. That and tubes anywhere you can use them. I love using a pair of ribbons in Blumlein but off axis in front of the kit about 6" higher on the stand than the snare to taste, and about 3-5 feet in front of the kit depending on the room. One capsule faces the outside edge of the snare closer to the high hat and the other capsule faces the floor tom. Looks like a cross but more like an "X" shape. I have tried this with inexpensive Ribbon mics from Shiny Box, and really nice Coles 4038s. Coles sound better. This set up gives me a great overall drum sound of the entire kit. It takes a bit of adjusting to taste but once you find the sweet spot it's awesome. For your kick on this track, you could have put a ribbon mic outside the kick drum on the beater side for capturing the attack instead of the inside one, and the one you put outside the front of the kick, AEA A440 did sound amazing. Well done.
Holy shit that was amazing! Love the idea and thanks for the video. I loved both of the overheads and the biggest surprise was the 88 out in the stairway which added some extra "life" to it in a way I was not ready for. Effing brilliant.
Thanks very much Christian that was bleedin awesome man. What an amazing sound from the ribbons on drums. Maybe even more epic for metal. Big thanks to the PLAP team
We use Ribbons inside the kick all the time. Certainly it needs to handle the SPL, but if you're worried about the air blasts, there are plenty of ways to diffuse it. It's a GREAT option, even for metal.
@@KohleAudioKult Have a bunch. Our Shure KSM313 mics can handle things inside with no considerations (and the back side has a nice top end boost), and the Samar VL37 pair both work great with with either a wind sock or at an angle. We even have an R44 that works great on kicks with no res head, but it needs a REALLY high headroom pre.
@@KohleAudioKult Yeah, the ribbons in the Shure ribbon mics are made of a proprietary material that is supposed to be fairly indestructible. I'm listening on the worst laptop speakers you can imagine and even there, the drums sound huge! Not kidding when I say that this might be my fav raw drumsound. VERY impressive!
Beautiful studio! I have some Hardy pres, love them. Amazing pres, particularly with di bass gtr. Great drummer, great sound man! Nice work. Very cool you did this. This sound could work on some Doom Metal, and any other rock genre. Ribbons don't always mean "vintage", and I don't think they get as much use as they deserve anymore. Great job with mic placement. Nice warm but full sound. Organic. I get tired of condensers all over the place. I appreciate the fact that you let us hear each mic, so we can hear the differences. Clicking like, and am already following. You've been putting out some great content, for metal guys and non metal guys alike. Thanks for the uber cool video! Rock on.
Wow, absolutely loved the sound ❤ ! Similar what I try to achieve at home. Try 😂 . Would love to hear another session like that. More Albini, more figur 8, let it bleed!
It will be nice in the future a video with low budget ribbon mics, like the the t.bone RB 500 from Thomann. I have really expensive mics in the studio, but I end up using those a lot of times. Like in OH, vocals and cabs.... Really nice video 👏👏👏
Ahahahah I KNEW IT. I knew someone else besides me would've used the "open door, mic outside" trick to get an amazing room. I started doing it one year ago in the small studio I'm working at because the rec room is way too dry to get lively-sounding drums. Sick stuff. P.s. The owner of this mic collection when her wife asks him where all their money went: 13:09
I do this myself from time to time. I'll throw in some pairs like M160's that have more than typical ribbon high frequency detail just to get away from it being too dark.
Love this! I've always been a huge fan of AEA mics. For what it's worth, the N8 isn't supposed to be a brighter, more modern sound (that would be the N22); it was actually intended to be a mono version of the R88.
As another audio engineer, I want to thank you for doing this incredibly creative experiment. I'm very surprised! I've used ribbon mics before on overheads, hi-hat, room, electric and acoustic guitar, vocals, piano, strings, but NEVER like this! The rejection coming from those mics boggles my mind. Very impressive. I'm definitely going to check out the multi-tracks. Again, thank-you for teaching me, and probably a few others, something new.
Believe me, I was surprised as well. I didn't expect those mics to sound that great in a metal drum setup. We've got the second chapter (guitars) coming up next week.
I think the passive R88 is pretty reasonably priced for what is. Just buy two good Neumanns or Royers or any other pair of high end mics for that purpose and compare the price. The 7k snare mic is another story though 😋
Yeah, keep in mind the R88 is actually two microphones in one body. The R84 is the single mic version and its price is comparable to other “medium priced” ribbons like Royer, Mesanovic, and Shure KSM313.
Hi, I like this experiment A LOT!!! Really good drum sounds! Bloody well done! The snare microphone was the biggest surprise for me. It really made the snare sound exactly how I want a snare to sound. WOW! Sadly, I don't have 7K lying round so... Other ribbons will have to do. :) Cheers! BR, M
The R88 definitely is a great mic. Even watching the video it sounded like listening to the drumset live in the room. Very natural sound and stereo perception on that one. I didn't really like the bassdrum sound, to be honest - don't know if it was the bassdrum itself or the in-shell mic. The ribbon on the outside sounded great, though, so probably the D6 killer doesn't kill the D6 for me. 😅 (Or the V-Kick, which I personally like best)
The v-Kick, the D6 and the Telefunken all have their own flavor of a modern and scooped sound. All good mics, the D6 would still be my desert island mic though.
Really cool video. The R44 is such nice smokey sounding mic. Used it on guitar cabinets a few times. A little surprised that I didn't see any Royer R121 or Coles 4038 microphones.
I've been using my ribbon mic in parallel with my condenser for vocals and it works great, really fills out the midrange. PLUS you don't have to worry about phase issues. Very cool!
@@KohleAudioKult Pretty much. It's weird how they capture different elements of the sound so they don't conflict. You get a real full sound without needing saturation or EQ.

@@GloveBunniesVideos I think the only thing that matters in that case is that the mics are placed coincident, I don't think microphone type can have such a influence as resulting waveforms can either be in phase or not (or at various degrees). Brave! I broke my modded fathead with a bass drum. Just the wind from a heavy hitter via a bass drum tunnel can break a ribbon let alone hitting one with a stick.
It helps a lot to position the microphone at an angle so that the wind does not hit the ribbon directly. It also helps to place a pop filter in front of it. Recently I even saw two pop filters in front of a 44.
