Yep, you have it right: That heavy steel ovals were "links" for antique "Link and Pin" couplers for the old rail cars. Because they aren't permanently attached to the rail cars, it's fairly easy to lose them from the train, especially considering how dangerous those attachments were for the crew connecting/disconnecting the cars. That "Pin" you found later goes with those links. When the cars came together, the crew would make sure the link part slid into a slot on the end of the car, then they'd drop the pin through a hole on top of that slot and through the hole in the link to couple everything together. Had to be quick and precise to keep from losing fingers or worse as the cars were coming together.
Nice "cold chisel" you pulled there too. Must have seen a lot of use, from the way that head was mushroomed. Easy to clean that one up and add it to your tool chest.

Yeah we use a Centurion 1400lb clamp. I still managed to break my fingers when two of them sucked together. So it's kind of made me leary of the more powerful ones. I do think I am missing some catches tho. A clamp magnet is made from one solid magnet, as opposed to regular 2 sided that are 2 pieces put together. Therefore it is a little stronger and even catches small stuff on its sides.

what I learned after destroying 2 double sided magnets and buying a clamp magnet is this... a double sided magnet consists of 2 thin magnets separated by the metal shell containing them... a clamp magnet is one massive magnet. I have to say I LIKE the clamp magnet more for several reasons, [1] it isnt as fragile as a double sided magnet. In many cases, double sided magnets sit for a long time before being sold and are often brittle and crack or shatter easily because they are so thin... clamp magnets are more durable due to their thickness and from personal experience, hold better than double sided magnets. They are more expensive yes, but are a GREAT gateway magnet to the 360 degree magnets that are best overall. as an example, my last double sided magnet was a 3200 lbs or so beast magnetics magnet and my current magnet is a brute magnetics 1200 lb clamp magnet. The clamp magnet has pulled up a LOT heavier things that my double sided magnet would be able to pull up. 360 magnets are def the best tho and that will be my next magnet purchase
