  • The Changing of the Guards ceremony was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, with the Evzones of the Presidential Guard dressed in the traditional costume of the Pontic Greeks, during the official event for the Pontian Greek Genocide Memory Day.
Annually on May 19 in Greece and around the world, memorial services are held to honor memory of the Pontian Greek Genocide victims. In 1994 the Hellenic Parliament recognized and condemned the genocide of more than 600 thousand Pontian Greeks. Records kept mainly by priests show a minimum 350,000 Pontian Greeks exterminated by Turkish troops and Kurdish militias during 1915-1923. Other sources including foreign missionaries mention 500,000 deaths, most through deportation and forced marches into the Anatolian desert. Greek cities (Pafra, Samsous, Kerasous, and Trapezous) endured massacres and deportations that destroyed their populations. The Pontic Genocide is one of the darkest moments in Greece’s history and has been recognized by Armenia, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden and the Artsakh Republic.
    Athens Greece 19 May, 2018.

My wife's relatives were from Greece, it's nice to understand a bit more about the history. The genocide was terrible, may we never ever forget the truth of what really happened. History is important and truth is important. Fascinating film, thank you. 💙🇬🇷💙🇬🇷💙

First of all: If any pontosgreeks read this, comment the city you come from (in modern Turkey), I am very curious.
Now to the topic: Most of the turks living in Trabzon, Sinop or Samsun are pontosgreeks themselves. Some of them can speak and understand Romeika. They play horon, have a very special culture but define themselves as turkish citizens (there are no problems with the ethnicity). Some of them are called "laz" but the numbers are way bigger, laz are especially those who live in Trapezunt (Trabzon) but you can find pontosgreeks in other cities too. The only difference is that they converted to Islam centuries ago, because of this they could stay in Turkey. The population exchange was about the religion, not the genetic heritage. You can find many documentaries about this topic.
Long story short: Pontosgreeks in general never left Turkey, they are still there. 😉 I am one of them.

@@stateofconstatinopole8316 No, it is called Romeika but you are not wrong. It is more like ancient Greek. To understand it you need to look at our history, thousands of years ago ancient Greeks from Megara came to the blacksea and established their own cities. After this, the greek language here developed without the influence of the greek language you speak now. So both now seperated languages had different influences. It is very unique, you could maybe understand 10% of it because it has more similiarities with the ancient greek language. You can google the pontic greek language.
BTW, there is a very good documentation of a greek linguist explaining everything. Maybe you can find it if you google it.
