Do a deep dive into James, you'll enjoy them. Far more bangers on each album than fillers. Excellent band with some great singles. Lost a Friend, Say Something and Just Like Fred Astaire are personal favourites along with Out to Get You
James do something to the Smiths and sing dark lyrics to an upbeat song. If you listen to the lyrics it’s about a boy getting hit by lightning deliberately.
Lovely song. Great lyrics ("there's four new colours in the rainbow - an old man's taking polaroids"). And when producer Brian Eno adds his "wall of Eno" harmonies to the last chorus it's just magical. If you're wondering about the subtitle, Lester Piggott was Britain's most famous horse-racing jockey (the UK's equivalent of Willie Shoemaker), and if you listen to the rhythm of the song your can hear that it's the galloping of a horse. "Laid", off the same album, should be your next James track. For another "fell by the wayside" British band from the era, try The Dylans' song "Godlike".
First saw this band in 1985 in Manchester. They were originally on Factory Records. Great band. I last saw then at GMex in Manchester 1990...we kind of went our separate ways after that ;)
Anything off their 1992 album Seven is great. I haven’t listened to this album in some time , but my recollection is had a mellow vibe overall. The song Laid is most definitely their best known song.
This band comes in with so many red flags for me not liking them, but somehow it all comes together in a really pleasing way. There like a 90s rom com that secretly makes you cry when you’re alone.
Saw these guys live about 20 years ago and going again later this year. Phenomenal stuff. This song is from a pretty sombre album mostly. There aren't many other songs like this on it but it still flows well. They're a very eclectic band so I recommend you try more from them. Constantly changing their musical style, from the folk-tinged early days in the mid 80's through the Madchester style early 90's Indie, then incorporating dance stuff with Britpop and their own unique style in the many albums since. Not a huge fan of their last few albums but their albums Stutter, Gold Mother, Seven, Laid, Millionaires, Pleased To Meet You and Hey Ma are all at least solid and some great.
James are a tremendous band who still have a big following, some excellent songs well worth exploring, brilliant live too
When I first saw The Smiths live, on the Meat is murder tour in 1985, when I was 16 , James were supporting, God I wish I could go back to those days

So vivid and beautiful!
My best gig ever was James supported by Happy Mondays back in '88. Amazing live band. Definitely worth a second glance.

I read somewhere The Smiths supported them a lot. .
the smiths covered what's the world by James
Bless, comparing James to Brit pop is like comparing the mighty boss tones to actual ska music 😂
