I cannot stress enough, the foil that Miles and Rainie are to Zach and Keith is just magical chemistry. I laugh so much just listening to your conversations. It's so much funnier than the older eps I've watched with the original guys.
Rainie's "It's interesting that we have an aquarium with the fish but the fish don't have an aquarium with us" is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile 😆
Zach, I've done the pills in pockets every day for years now. My dog got a hold of one and had to be hospitalized overnight and it cost me $1,800. Now what I do is keep one of the old prescription bottles and split them up so I have some at work waiting for me.
Also started to notice I’ve incorporated Miles’ “it’s GOTTA BE the X” when making decisions. I was picking out a kombucha in target recently and I heard myself say out loud, to no one in particular, “it’s ✨gotta be✨ the berry lemonade!”
20:55 - This is the eternal struggle for chronic pain sufferers. Especially conditions like AS (Zach’s) and fibromyalgia (mine) where not enough activity causes pain but also too much activity causes pain, so it’s just a constant game of figuring out whether your body is saying “do less” or “do more.”
Fellow fibro person here. The worst is when you're fatigued from having done too much the day before so you don't do anything, but then not doing anything flares you up more. 🥲
@@naxp42 Yep! One of my current strategies is to just start with very light activity like getting up from the couch and getting a drink or washing a few dishes, then check in to see if I feel better or worse, but it’s still always a gamble.
Vlog idea: Keith & Zach actually call Miles for advice. Over a week, he helps them make food choices, solves their relationship troubles, sex tips, etc.
Thank you Zach for talking about the spoon theory! Christine Miserandino created the metaphor. Spoons basically equal a unit of energy. Healthy people usually have an unlimited amount. «Spoonies» as we sometimes call ourselves have a certain amount. Some days we have more, some days we have less. Different tasks use up different amount of spoons. Quote from an article «Let’s say you have 12 spoons, which is the amount Christine used to illustrate the theory. In an average day, you might want to: Wake up Brush your teeth Wash your face Get dressed Eat breakfast Go to the doctors Come home Make and eat dinner Change into your pyjamas Right away, this comes to 9 activities. Some of these tasks, like brushing your teeth, may only use up 1 spoon, while going to the doctors has a number of stages and could use up 6 spoons. This only leaves you with 5 spoons for everything else… and there’s no way you can make 5 spoons stretch that far. So what are your options if you need to get everything done with only a small amount of spoons? You can opt to ‘borrow’ spoons from the next day’s allowance. However, this means you start the next day in deficit. Imagine trying to get all those tasks done with an even smaller number of spoons! It’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of overdoing it and exhausting yourself, due to not managing your spoons well enough.» I really appreciate you guys talking about this, as someone who has invisible illnesses as well.
My boyfriend and I searched for his wallet for days. It was driving us crazy. Then we get notified from Amazon saying that his wallet was in a return he made. They sent it back to us for free and everything was there. We were shocked.
The way I wasn’t ready for the life talk from Zach. I know he’s talking about chronic pain but even looking at it from a mental health point of view made my brain really think.
yes! hearing them talk about it made me realize i feel the same, as someone with depression and anxiety. it's a really good analogy. i'd probably start using it to give myself more mercy on days i feel debilitated.
As someone who is pretty newly diagnosed with an array of invisible disabilities/illnesses, Zach is such awesome representation. I have definitely found that pacing myself/using my wheelchair even when I feel ok to conserve energy has helped immensely. Honestly, hearing about how Zach handles his chronic illness makes me feel so much less alone. Thank you
2:00 sharks, rays, and skates are members of class chondrichthyes which means cartilaginous fish. their cartilaginous skeletons are one distinctive factor separating them from boney fish. their scales are another, bc they have placoid scales. their scales are still dermal in origin like all fish, but only chondrichthyes have placoid scale shapes. that’s why these fish don’t look like they have scales.
Thank you for talking about your chronic pain and the spoon theory! Everything you said is super true and very comforting for me, to see that there are others out there who need to juggle the immense task of staying alive and well! Able people don't often realize how difficult it is to exist.
I completely understand the not enough activity versus too much activity with my chronic illness of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Along with the good days with having it as bad as I do and the bad days that come with it too. Sometimes movement and medicine helps but sometimes nothing will. Been dealing with my rheumatoid arthritis for damn near 22 years now. I was diagnosed at 6 and am 27. I pretty much know by now what I can and can't do with my rheumatoid arthritis on my really bad days with the pain level.
Hearing Zach talk about the spoon theory just makes me want to sob as a person who is also in chronic pain. Grateful for Zach and Kelsey for making me feel less alone ❤️
Siblings, cousins, coworks. Best organization strategy! Put items with identical items (pens with pens), put items with simular but different (pens with markers) or items that have the same function family (pens with scissors) This has helped me so much 😅😅
Aahhh yes Zach was the person who taught me about spoon theory! We use it at home to explain my boyfriend’s ADHD brain vs mine. Thank you so much for this language!
TMI, I have IBS and at Walmart they sell an off-brand imodium that is 12 tabs for $1.08 (which is a good price and they work the same as imodium). BUT the reason it's so inexpensive, is because you HAVE to have scissors to get the tabs out. Which, I would debate with Keith is wayyyyy worse than the lactaid drama. When you are on the verge of soiling what you're wearing, because you ate a bell pepper and you have to have scissors to open the anti-poo poo medicine...? It's fucked. 🤣
The name brand Imodium is packaged like that too. It's because the pills dissolve so quickly that if you pushed them through they'd break. Dunno why they're like that, but yeah, super annoying!
I was always confused about the spoons thing. Zach, you explained it so much better than what I have seen before. I didn’t even know it was a theory! This helps me a lot with my own autoimmune disease and neurodivergence.
Chewing more also allows more digestive enzymes to help break down the food. The reason steak, or any protein, doesn't break down as well in your mouth, is that the enzyme for protein is in your stomach. Avoid taking large bites of meat, and chew it so your teeth can break it into smaller pieces. Cuts down the bloat, indigestion, and the possibility of choking.
As a retail worker I HATE that they have the price per Oz because customers would always be getting confused and thinking the retail price was the price per Oz and they'd always be leaving stuff behind because of that
Your mouth starts the digestion process through salivary amylase, an enzyme that chemically breaks down food when you're chewing. That's why it's suggested that you chew more, because you're missing that first step if you don't!
The chronic pain/neurodivergent crossover is real. Its a low spoon day for me but kids be kids and need things so watching this is my self care today.....love that Zach shares his experiences and makes invisible illness and invisible disabilities less taboo to talk about.
I can’t find the trypod episode but I wanted to thank Keith for recommending Dadi Freyr a couple of years ago. I became an instant fan and got to see him in San Francisco last week! 😊
re: Rainie and her question about Chronic Pain. Eventually after time you learn your limits, and learn what self care things really work for you. So I work myself to close to the limit, then I automatically build in some rest. It's all about learning your limits and rolling with things when your body changes. Like Zach said, the mental cloudiness is a flag too. I play the NYTimes games every morning to gauge where I am. All we can do is keep moving though, don't stop moving, because as soon as you stop you're in trouble. Even if it's moving from room to room once in a while!

By cooking and chopping food as well as all the effort put into domesticating crops and animals (making perfect food) we greatly shortened our digestive track and our teeth got smaller over millions of years.
