I live in Canada and most people get a year of maternity leave.. paid!
Yeah, but in the US taxes are lower so all things being equal, you make more money after taxes. In Canada you make less money after taxes but get these types of "benefits." But they really aren't benefits because you are paying for them one way or the other.
Plus, just because the US doesn't mandate maternity leave doesn't mean that it isn't available. Any reputable employer provides at least 6 weeks--usually more.

Mary Hines many places give you full pay while on maternity leave. For instance, I worked at Walgreens and employees there received full pay for 6 weeks. And Walgreens isn't known to be super employee friendly. I know of many other better employers that give a full 3 months at full salary. All in the US. Perhaps there is some data out there to see how much paid time companies give on average. Just because law does not mandate it doesn't mean companies don't provide it. So to just look at what the law says (or doesn't say) is doesn't give the full, accurate picture of this issue.
6 weeks is not enough time. I was in pain for 3 months (walking and standing hurt) and I had a really easy labor and delivery.

In the United Kingdom, where I live, Statutory Maternity Leave is 52 weeks. It's made up of:
• Ordinary Maternity leave - first 26 weeks
• Additional Maternity leave - last 26 weeks
You do not have to take 52 weeks, but you must take 2 weeks' leave after your baby is born (or 4 weeks if you work in a factory).

Yep, the US is terrible with this. I missed out on 3 years with my first baby, so happy to be home with my second. So happy to be living in Germany where mothers AND fathers can be at home. There is also much less PPD women are much better taken care of post pregnancy.

austria: 1 to 3 years of leave, the longer u stay at home, the less money u get per month. but yr job is guaranteed for the time u take the leave. and of course dads or moms can take it, and also switch. plus, u get a monthly payment for yr kids til they finish education, which includes university (which is free). highest tax rate is at 50%, but u have to earn quite a lot of money to pay 50% (i.e. those ppl can afford those taxes). plus 4 weeks before birth and 6 weeks after birth, mothers are not allowed to work and get their full salary.
It's still their money though so why are they paying a higher percentage than others? i don't think people be penalised for being successful. You should be penalized if you make poor financial choices not good ones.
ppl who earn more money pay more taxes out of the idea of solidarity, i.e. the ppl who are either lucky to have money (rich families) or lucky because they r very able (lots of talent) or also the ones that have worked smartly for their money pay taxes so that those ppl who r less fortunate (sick ppl, handicapped ppl, mentally challenged ppl, etc) and ppl who have no income (kids, students, parents who take care of kids, elderly) can also live a life that is great. the idea being: if more ppl are happy and content in a society, there will be less crime, more prosperity for everyone and happiness.
i see yr point is one that focuses on the individual - i get that. bear in mind tho - an individual who is successful is *never* successful by her/himself. there was always either parents that helped, or some other family members, or that teacher. or that boss, or the spouse, or the kids or just society as a whole. or just planet earth which shares her air, water and beauty with us.
so i do think, that when we focus too much on our idividual goals, we lose as a species, and hence - there will be no prosperity really, no matter how successful one is financially.
this is also why in austria and in most of europe, the more money u make, the more u pay for yr health insurance in order to make it possible that a low income worker will get the same expensive cancer care as a millionaire. i could not live with myself knowing that i am better off in society just because i got more money. i want everbody to be happy.

In Ireland you can take up to 10 months for maternity leave. The first 6 months are paid and the other 4 months are like an add on. Plus the first 4-6 weeks are mandatory. There’s also 6 weeks of paternity leave

Who says that people get punished immediately? People who are punished are given the chance to repent, they are even asked if they do regret it and if they don't and are still on their sin, in this case they get punished. Sometimes their case would be in progress for months, its not just punish them all with no investigation or questioning
Anyhow our country is a bit complicated with how the law works their are a lot of parties that make our country. There are people who are religious and there are people who have traditions and their own culture and those are all majorities that can't be ignored when seeking new laws. But nowadays thank god things are changing and people especially women are getting their rights😍

This is why I just quit work. I refuse to leave my daughter in the care of someone else. I got 8 weeks paid maternity but there's no way I could go back to work after that. Like 8 weeks she's still way small and needs mommy not a random day care person who's gonna leave her in a crib 90% of the day
I think that's what mother's should do. Mother's should take a year or two off (unpaid) when they decide to have kids because even 6 months isn't enough really.

If most people added up the cost of working and daycare and everything else, it would actually be cheaper for them to stay at home. Most people today live beyond their means or at the top end of their earnings which is why they cannot afford to stay home or take time off. I am not speaking of single parents, that is a whole different matter. I never wanted to have children and have other people raise them while I was out earning a paycheck. When working you pay more for hairstyling, gas for commuting, car insurance (the more you drive, the more you pay), work clothes, convenience foods and lunches out, diapers and wipes (daycares have strict rules of diaper changing every hour, not when needed), etc. There is no easy answer but perhaps we should encourage one another to stop trying to keep up with the Jones's.
