  • Dr. Furlan answers a question about what are the predisposing and precipitating factors for nociplastic pain (fibromyalgia). In this video she explains that adverse childhood adversities (ACEs) are important risk factors to develop health issues, including chronic pain and fibromyalgia. She also discusses some strategies to mitigate the negative effects of ACEs in children, so they do not become adults with chronic pain.

I totally believe my childhood trauma and adult stress caused my fibromyalgia. Those stressors were a huge factor, then add a health issue from early on not being able to digest cane sugar, the final was a pulled ligament in my lower back damaged ( I am hyper Mobil so I never healed wells). I totally agree chromic stress caused my fibromyalgia.

    Thank-you for this video.
It explains what I have been researching for years due to Fibromyalgia and PTSD, OCD, anxiety and depression.
I had parents die in my childhood, mother to a horrific suicide and had to be raised by extended family who didn't want me, very bitter and political. It all caused health problems from bullying and sexual abuse within the home, school,
bullying, never fitting in anywhere, relationship issues, self sabotage.

I have had a very traumatic childhood, mother was an alcoholic, my father, who I actually was very close to, worked all the time, he had to. Parents got divorced when I was 23 years old, raised my three younger sisters, one of them died in my arms 9 years ago, 47 years old. My father died in my arms, too and I held my mother, when she died, which overthread my boundries, but I couldn’t help it! I worked together with my father for 17 years as a carpainter, 15 hours a day, which was a very, very hard job for a woman. When he passed, 15 years ago, my life was in ruins, totally devastated. He was the man of my life. I miss him, his laughter, every single day. I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 32 years, I am now 61. I think in my case it is a combination of hard work and my childhood.

I had very bad ulcerative colitis and was hospitalised five times over three years. The trauma to my gut converted to Fibromyalgia. I was 47 and had a brilliant but stressful career, together w personal challenges that precipitated this condition. This episode converted to Fibromyalgia. I have been unable to ever work again and it has been life destroying for me socially, personally and financially.
Trauma defs capable of morphing into Fibromyalgia.

Developmental trauma may not be as apparent or extreme, but can a very major impact on the child and then the adult. It certainly can leave one predisposed to fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions.

I had a good childhood and no one in the family has a history of pain. I had a wonderful family and could confide in them. I had no tramatic events. My grandfather was an accomplished doctor and known worldwide. I was physically fit and always ate the correct food. I had a bad slip and fall due to someones negligence. My Landmark Case was the biggest in the country. Lawyers advertised on tv due to my court case. I was 38 and now I'm 73.

Dr. Furlan, after watching a couple of your videos I've encouraged myself to write this post. I'm a 57years old male from New Delhi. I was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder with symptoms of SLE and SS in 2010. I was given Endoxan (Cytoxan) and Cilamin (Cupramin) for a little over 1year. To keep this conversation short, since August 2023 I'm suffering from terrible pain in my both legs - between the knees and hips, including them as well, to be precise. I was very active and was on toes for the entire day, suddenly when this pain literally has crippled me. As of now I mostly stay in bed and use a walker to go to the bathroom, never left the house since August this year. I did have pain in the past, but it vanished on it's own without taking any special medicines. Now it seems this pain is going stay here forever. All pain killers are ineffective. I want to know is, should I increase my mobility despite the pain? I need to be back on tracks, already I've missed a lot. Thank you, Chanchal Pal.

Thank you for these videos. Helping a lot. Wondering about shyness and if there is a root cause and/or if/how would it be related to fibromyalgia. As a child and up until my early 30's I was extremely shy- debilitating at times. Now as an adult, learning about my fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, and stress/anxiety... wondering how or if the social anxiety/shyness I had as a child is where my journey with fibro began. I also had "growing pains" and sore bones and joints (likely not actually bones or joints now I know more) as a kid. I was actually given a psych evaluation around 11 as the Dr.s thought I was making stuff up. After watching your video on myofascial pain syndrome and fibro and why people get it... light bulbs are going off everywhere for me. Curiouser and curiouser :)

This video gets me thinking ,retracing events of life some as I recall and others as my parents convey to me ....when I was 3 or 4 I was diagnosed with petite mal seizures. It lasted til age 11,then by age 12 with no seizures for a year my neurologist said I was free of epilepsy. I was on Gabapentin ,it was the last medicine I took before the seizures disappeared. Soon after I developed scoliosis, not related to Gabapentin because others in my family had the condition. Mine was mild ,I did not receive treatment when it was found. I did have aches and pains, stabbing ,burning sensations in my shoulder, chest pains when at rest...no heart issues all muscle pains, .Eventually leading to back pain. I had many "growing pains" as a child and into my teens and 20's. Always thought that was normal part of life. My grandparents and my mom said she experienced the same...they did not have epilepsy, others in the family did like cousins. So I think its true, to some extent these conditions are familial . However; I wonder if the Epilepsy was the start of the pain cycle in my life? and maybe what caused me to be predisposed to other things? Just connecting the dots would help. Now I have CRPS after a surgery which was needed after breaking my foot. And a 2nd surgery in the same foot due to the nickel allergy caused an allergic reaction and the beginning of a rejection of the hardware in my feet. I question now in hindsight if I really should have agreed to the surgery. Could epilepsy as a child be the reason for the CRPS today? Are there studies open looking for participants for research? This video prompted more questions for me and topics I need to research. Thanks for providing the insight !

    • @lindacarmelle8333

Just another realization, I believe that is why when Gabapentin was offered as an option for treatment of pain that I decided to try to use that medicine , I do not want to switch ,even though I have side effects from it ,I still believe its the best choice with the least side effects .Currently my dose is 400mg 3x daily. But a side effect is not sleeping because of that medicine. How common a side effect is lack of sleep with Gabapentin because the bottle says it will make you drowsy and I don't get that way and I wonder why?

@@DrAndreaFurlan Thank you that makes me feel better....I thought having epilepsy as a child may have made me prone to CRPS later in life. It is just a coincidence that I had the same medication twice in life for different conditions, since my body handled Gabapentin as a child I felt better choosing it from the ones my ortho offered for relief of CRPSnow as an adult.

I have the worst case of Fibromyalgia in the world. I saw Dr. Robert Bennett at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon for 11 years until he retired. I have him on tape with Maria Shriver. I set up the interview on TV. The first half hour is explaining what causes fibromyalgia and the second half is showing a surgeon getting brain surgery for fibromyalgia. It's very risky and he didn't want to live if he couldn't do surgery. It is extra bone in the neck that does not bother most people. However if there is a fall, a blow or something traumatic happens it can cause it. The bone presses on the brain stem and spinal cord. I have had Fibromyalgia for 35 years.

I thought she was crazy. I listened to it all but decided against it. Speaking with my mother as an adult she had the same symptoms as long as she can remember, she was diagnosed in her 50's about 40 years ago. Is there a genetic predisposition? As for diet, I was brought up in the time of proper meals there certainly not much sugar and pre prepared food around, yes we got occasional treats and home baking. What do I think? A predisposition, and an overload of stress. And need to be honest with patients and tell them this can't be cured but treated - my mind broke

Leaky gut is the cause of it, the digestive tract became so compromised that you cant produce enough gastric fluid, with that you cant absorb nutrients, with that you end up having all the symptoms on earth.....solution 1: fix the gut, cutting out inflammatory foods, and fixing the damage, Solution 2: hoponopono for several months, work on self love, self acceptance, forgiveness, self worth, and work on distractions of the pain a book by Dr Samos explains the process, you can be totally free from the pain. Maguinesium malate 1200mg a day, vitamin D3 10.000ui a day will great help you while working on the healing process. What you are saying is that all these scientists are wrong, or are laying? Are you really trying to say that?

Why discuss only associated factors instead of toxic build up, calcium crystal deposits r/t nutrition, glycated proteins and other things that hamper joint movement and the hampering smooth movement of fascia against muscle in everyday movement? Fasting to autophagy and the use of whole body enzymes, massage techniques, and eliminating plant-based proteins (lectins, oxalates, etc., that are helping so much?

Regardless etiology a sacral bilateral dorsal root ganglion nerve block first month. Next blocking bilateral epidural steroid injection of the brachial plexus. C5 - T1. Makes for 4 shots additionally bilateral injection in the sacrum of the miracle drug nerve block. Six shots one office visit. Fibromyalgia pain is over.

Hi Jeanette, I'm sorry to hear that. The first step to improve from fibromyalgia is to make the connection that those problems might have an influence on pain. There is treatment for childhood trauma, anxiety and stress. Many patients do not make that connection and they keep looking for another pill, or an injection or even surgery that will treat their pain, and these things do not work well for emotional trauma.

@@DrAndreaFurlan I learned early on, before i was 10, to wall myself off from the abuse thrown my way, well most if it. I didn't start getting sick, and progressively worse, after I came back from a cruise sick with Zika virus. It all started with neuropathy, ability to power walk, and balance. Neurologists I saw were useless cuz it was discovered I'm diabetic and they lazy diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy, one suggested CIDP, but the one doing NCV never did EMG and just said DN, but i didn't agree. Rheumatologist wasn't very good, made me feel like I was wasting her time. Neurologist dumped me and GP won't refer me for second opinion or to do EMG

Physical & emotional trauma is high on the list of probabilities of which are likely the direct causation that brings on FM / ME. I've been I'll for almost 41 years and I have been studying our illness. I was nearly killed in a duel side impact auto accident by a drunk driver. 4 years prior to the collision I lost my mom when I was 16, at 20 the accident happened, about 1 year after the accident I lost my father to cancer. 7 years later I lost my brother, 5 years after that I lost 1 of 2 sisters.

My symptoms didn't come to full fruition until I was 33 years old. This has nothing to do with childhood traumas, it's to do with all the vaccines given to children. Xxxx
