My friends and I have been proponents of this for a while now. Ive always called it the "Drip Drop". Really nice shot to fit into the arsenal so you have 4 different ways to play the 3rd. Drop, Drive, Drip Drop, and Lob
def going to try this out! Thx Zane! @Zane as a pro how do you deal with low hard serves with spin or little bounce after they hit the ground in front of you?
Thank you for your time and posting. Saw you at PPA St. George UT this last weekend. Didn't say hi, I don't like to bother you guys. But I did see you doing spin serves to Alshon (and laughing while doing them). That was pretty funny. What was really funny was the ref never saw it and Alshon had to tell the ref to pay attention. Thanks again. :)
I always wondered about the 3rd shot Drop. While it gives my side time to get to the Kitchen, there’s very little margin for error. If it pops up just a little, it’s coming back as a speed up. Playing this shot seems to increase the odds that we’d get a pop up back and can attack our way to the Kitchen… or put it away. Love to see how much strategy if evolving.
I jumped into the comments section immediately to see if the "drive-drop" hybrid I've been incorporating as one of my 3rd shot options is the shot of topic. I'm so pleased that one of my favorite shots is being featured by a pro. If you can do a top-spin drive and you have a paddle that offers high spin RPMs, this shot is right for you.
Around 2019, local workshop instructor referred to this shot as the “dying quail”. A low drive that would just sink once past the net. It’s not really new, maybe new in certain pickleball circles. Keep up the great work, Zane!
That sounds like a slightly different shot. This ball is slower, has more height, less spin and hits the court 4 or 5 feet beyond the kitchen line right at the returner's feet as they approach the kitchen. The dipping drive is hard, low and dives dramatically after crossing the net plane.
I naturally do this when I drive as a tennis player that hits a lot of topspin. I still like to to topspin drops that give me time to get to the net after 3rd shot. I think I’ll work on mixing it up with both of these.
Also, if you recognize a returner hitting a consistently shallow return, stand about 3-5 feet inside the baseline and get up to the return ball even quicker. Then, use this 3rd shot instead of a full drive catching the returner in no man's land with the ball dipping right at their feet. Watch for the poach from the returner's partner. Since this ball doesn't have the pace of a full drive and is higher over the net, crossing and poaching by the net guy is much easier. If they catch on, mix it up between this, a full drive or a drop.
So the stroke has full tennis like motion with finish at the ear side, spinning from side to side with low to high motion and little knee bend. The take back seems not keeping paddle in the eyesight . However can you demo this on balls bouncing lower?
Nice concept. The flaw I see is that the Lobster is set up to deliver granny shots which are easy to return and it looks great on video. However,, when playing at 3.5 level and above those soft granny shot are not what you will get. You will receive hard hit and fast paced drives that will be very difficult to return. Set the ball machine up to send balls with pace at your feet and with top spin. This is what you must practice. Receiving granny shots is good for beginner and novice players. For intermediate and advance players drilling those soft shots will set you up for failure. If this video is meant for beginners and novice players then it is right on. Good job.
This shot works well for those slow moving to the kitchen by habit or from a weak return. That dude is simulating slowness to show us when to use this shot. It's just another tool to use for certain opponents or situations.
Zane, you are a cheater. You were spinning your ball with your serving hand before hitting it this past weekend, during the tournament. They showed you doing it. And you kept doing it, sneaking it in. The ref did not catch you, but your opponent and the camera did. I will not watch you anymore. I do not watch cheaters.
Well if u r hitting third shot drives in the hands of the opponent, ur better off hitting drops. Third shot drives r supposed to be passing winners. A hybrid third shot drive needs to be pretty accurate to do anything.
The result of a good third shot drive should be a weak counter and an opportunity to move forward for an easier 5th shot drop. They rarely produce outright winners or errors unless they are extremely low with big spin or clip the net.

I especially like the focus on when it’s best to go for it. That’s very helpful

3rd shot lob is not a real 3rd shot lol
This is my signature shot,
My drives are slow and drops are high. So I prefer this shot.

4.0 to Pro podcast has been talking about this for a while now! I call it a check drive or a changeup.
It’s called “The Drip” (drive-drop)
@@gorgangorgan3they make penicillin for that play

The Drip!
Or the Drove? 😂
The drip reminds me of when it drips over the net

How to defend/attack the hybrid drive?

I’ve heard some call this hybrid between drive and drop as a drip or a dip.

Very informative. Thanks again for Lobster settings. 😎
Great job on the video! - cheers from Nashville! 🍻
A slo mo on how to hit this shot would be helpful
The key is variance. Keep your opponent thinking by having a variety of quality 3rd shot options.
Good stuff! Yobow everywhere….
Love the drip. Gonna get my drilling crew to feed balls and see what we can do with it. 🙏
Are you using Continental or Eastern grip for this shot?
Semi-western is the best grip for this shot, IMO.

You have to learn how to hit the shot before you can handle the harder returns. Even professional musicians practice hard passages at slower tempos.
I've been doing this for a long while now, and my groups are picking up on it😅 woooo
Drippin on em
omg yobow, i'mma try it ouy.
Third shot dive!
Big Fan here, but man those DJT cycling shorts is very patriotic!
I’m jealous
This shot gets nastier as the paddles get spinnier.
Why is the other guy waiting for the ball to drop to hit it? Doesn’t seem realistic. 🤨🤨
Color me confused. That guy could have EASILY moved up to the kitchen and slammed those shots you were hitting.
Nope

Stopped at advertising, next
These videos are free to watch. Somebody has to pay for them. Zane don't work for free 😂

“I will not watch cheaters” ☝️🤓 goofy ahh kid
Move on. How many times have you posted this?
