I have MS Plaid and they're pretty close on straight line performance. It shoves you back pretty well, but I also tested M3 Performance (new one) and to be honest it's not an enormous difference in senses. Numbers climb faster but it's maybe 20-30% difference in how it "feels" at 100% more horsepower
I have a Lucid Air Touring 2024 & frankly for the money, it's just as good as the sapphire. In swift mode, I get 630 HP & I paid $94,... vs the sapphire $249,...➕️ mine comes in various colors.
Agreed. The number of instances where the differences between a GT (or even Touring, as you have) and Sapphire make a difference in every day driving is not enough to justify the cost. On a track, it's unrivaled. But.....we don't drive on tracks, we drive on roads. I have a GT and after the first week I stopped doing launches...they're just not comfortable. The 'real', 'useful' power is on the freeway for overtakes. Driving at 70 or 75, if you need a quick blip to get around some folks, you're at 90-95 with zero drama or effort (not flooring it, either, there's almost never a need), then back down to cruise once the traffic is clear. I've lost count of how many times in the last 4 months I've found that to be useful. The 0-60 stuff is honestly just a novelty that wears off after a couple of weeks imo....and I absolutely LOVE performance driving. The cornering and handling are outstanding in all the models. It's just a pleasure to drive. TL;DR: you're right. If you have the money, sure, go for it, but for PRACTICAL DAILY purposes, I find there just isn't a ENOUGH difference between Touring, GT and Sapphire to justify a Sapphire. You need 'stupid' money to be ok with it. The GOOD news is...get yourself a used Touring or GT and drive the hell out of it. They can be had for mid 60's.
I love my Air GT but would love to drive the Sapphire on a track or twisty mountain road. Beyond the power, it has many suspension, brake, and tuning mods. They say the torque vectoring is like magic. As cars get quicker and more track-worthy the price climbs quickly. The maxed-out Taycan Turbo can be optioned to an even higher price, same as high performance ICE cars.
427 epa is “really quite a lot for any electric car”…That is INSANE range!!! not “really quite a lot” for any EV as if there are others. Only another Lucid could do more. Obviously anyone getting sapphire doesn’t drive one in a way to get that. You should be collapsing with amazement over 427
My Rivian will hit 60 in about three seconds in sport mode. I never use sport mode because the standard setting is much faster than I ever need. I can't even imagine what a 1.9 second experience would be like.
It's 1234, but with a wink. Real hp is more than that but they don't really want to say. Each of the 3 motors on the Sapphire is rated at 670hp each, so hypothetically capable of 2010hp. Lucid engineers say that the battery amperage is the limiting factor, not the motors. With new battery chemistry they could potentially just dial the power up a notch. Yes, that's insane.
But, does it have FSD?. I love my Model S, not for the speed only but it can drive me and take the stress of driving anywhere. The amazing power is there when I need it. When Lucid, which I cheer, comes up with an fsd for their car, I'll add this one to my EV cars collection. Ty for the video.
Who cares the plaid x would just smoke it for less than half the cost! What I want to see is the mid size they'll need another 5+billion to build. But with some variation of the sapphire power train. Imagine a model 3 sized lucid sedan with that insane power train but 1,000# or even more lighter weight!
Hilarious review. I have a 2021 base model 3 rear wheel drive that is Tesla's slowest car------It scares the hell out of me as it is still the fastest care I've ever driven with zero to 60 at 5.5 secs. If I could afford a Lucid Air------I would buy one. The sapphire is EV royalty for sure. Your review gave me a good laugh when we're thankful you still had your drivers license. LOL.
11:55 you get over it after a few weeks. You drive like an asshole for the first 2-3 weeks, then you realize just how well the car drives at ALL speeds (even normal speeds), and you slow down, using the speeds only when necessary to get around traffic on freeways. It's a shame that you wrote off the GT and Touring models as "only having 1 or 2 motors." I've driven the Touring and GT, they both drive great, and for day to day (not track), nobody should feel bad that they can 'only' afford the Touring/GT and not the Sapphire. Other than brief giggles and track days, I still argue a Touring/GT is beyond adequate and still gives you the "now you've over there..." feeling that you described (and you're not wrong!)
8:05 is the true utility of having gobs of instantly-available power. The lack of drama and sound makes it hard to understand just how quickly the car is accelerating...but that is where EV's in general, but especially the Touring/GT/Sapphire have daily utility. Overtaking is part of daily driving. There are legit uses for having the ability to accelerate quickly to just get things done...then you back off and resume normal cruising. What is NOT clear from this video is that Touring/GT do it just as well, for all intents and purposes. I drive a GT and find the power to be useful every single day...however, I never need all of it to get the job done. On that basis, while it would be hugely entertaining to have more power, the reality is that there is bucket loads in the lower models, and unless you have $250k burning a hole, I'd argue the value for money is so much higher in a lightly used Touring or GT for high 50's or mid to high 60's, respectively. I wish this video addressed this point, otherwise it was great.
Generally speaking, those who go for the top-of-the-line model in a lineup do so for bragging rights and that they can afford it. At that point you're moved more by emotion than sensibility. I just wish the Sapphire interior came in more interesting colors besides just the black.
So much better than anything Tesla makes. Looks better and has an interior that is deserving of a luxury car. That car makes a Tesla plaid look like a Yugo.
Nobody talks about it but it’s wild how many manufacturers are biting off of Cadillac’s latest design language. Nearly everyone in the business now has a thin vertical slit in their front fascia as a pass thru for air or it’s an actual vertical thin LED light in Cadillac fashion. The interior is also Cadillac esque but others like Lincoln and Genesis have no adopted this interior layout straight out of the Cadillac _Celestiq._ It’s always cool to be the fastest on the road but as you pointed out it’s useless in traffic. I would much rather spend an extra $100,000 and opt for the larger and much more luxurious CELESTIQ to live with over this.
Now just find a road where you can routinely get anywhere need those speeds. It amazes me that Americans are concerned about fast cars when our roads are crumbling before our eyes.
The Rimac Nevera is the quickest EV ever made. I just watched a video in which it cleans the Sapphire's clock, over and over. That's expected given its 1911 hp.
