No. There is no 10 year work visa for China. Even the 10 year travel visa for China requires you to leave every few months or so. It's not that big of a deal. Also, you can't work on a travel visa.
Normally I would never donate any money to a UA-camr but your videos are so genuine and entertaining that I'm not going to hesitate pledging some money to help you create more videos for us. $10 a month to you is the better entertainment I could get anywhere else. Stay Awesome!
I don't even watch TV anymore, not even the news. It's all BS. It's the people at the top pushing some agenda by trying to steer public opinion in a direction that benefits some special interest group. It's manipulation. I'd rather watch videos like this. It's much more genuine and real.
I saw this video years ago and came back to watch it again because I thought it inspirational. It's really something to see how your channel and life has grown. That's great! I'm surprised to see that you still read and reply to comments on old videos. I like that. Keep staying awesome.
Don't worry too much about the technicalities of your video production....the value of your channel is your openness, honesty and wisdom. Your courage is very inspirational!!
Carl Hopkinson - yes! Good advice! It's the openness and the thoughtfulness that make his videos so good. No need to put a lot of additional effort into production.
Hey Serpentza, part of the reason I chose to learn mandarin in the first place was because of your videos. Four years later I'm here taking a year abroad in Beijing and I couldn't be happier with the experiences I've had over these past few months. I wish you best of luck with your documentary!
The documentation of your life experience is very appreciated especially for young people who may be in more or less in the same situation, I like your resilience, determination and genuine, sincere exposure of personal feelings and experiences of your life. That made me send this video to my son to learn from. You are awesome and stay Awesome.
Bro I’m black African and that thing about family pressure to have a family is what I’ve been through, now I have a kid with her and all is mayhem, wrong woman and damn we really get screwed by social pressure.
Thank you for sharing your fascinating and inspiring personal story. I find all your videos very professional and wish you more success and happiness in your life.
My God. I've been binging your channel non stop (a little out of order), and made it to this one. Out of every piece of inspirational anything I've ever read, heard or seen anywhere, there's something so uniquely special about this that makes it stand in a league of its own.
I found your videos only a few weeks ago, and today I watched this one. Uncanny parallels in our lives. I lived in SA for 7 years but left a year before you were born. Emmigrated to the USA with $2000 and a "maybe" job offer which took a year to become reality. I've made many wonderful business trips to China. HK, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing and many sights in between. I'm waiting for my visa, and hopefully I can be with my Tianjin soulmate in only a few more weeks. Thanks for your work. You're awesome.
Winston, you’re so inspiring!!! I just happened to stumble on one of your videos whilst doing research for my upcoming trip to China this week. I can’t believe I’ve watched so many more of your videos, truly informative and genuine. Usually for a lot of content creator I watch, I get bored and move on, but you make your videos different. It grabs you and keeps you. I look forward to seeing more. You’re the real deal, genuine and straightforward no bullshit. That’s what a lot of us want. Thank you!!! All the best to you in your life and your fiancé
Sure, I'll support you with a small monthly kicker. It's well worth it for all I've learned about China from you. You've answered a lot of questions I've had in the back of my mind for several years. Of course I have a hundred more. I'm confident that I speak for most everyone who watches your videos when I say that we all want you to be a huge success because in return, we feel a part of it. We succeed when you succeed. Very few of us will ever see the "real" China, so we can live it vicariously through you. All the best, amigo.
This video is incredible. You have a really interesting life. I found your channel a week ago have watched a ton of your videos and recommended it to friends. I would love to hear you deep dive into those stories you mentioned about how you started off in china went homeless etc. Your production has become very impressive in your recent videos. Keep up the great work!
I really needed to hear what you and Winston said. I have had so many failures in life and I feel like a roller coaster. I to had a corvette (2009 new) and now I have a POS old honda after bankruptcy. My brother who lives with me now went through the same exact thing making great money to nothing and depression has kicked in big time over the years. I havnt given up but as I am sure you know it is hard when it feels like life is just walking all over you and you have no say in the matter. I feel worthless. Im not cured by you speech at the end but I am inspired and very apprciated for it. I am alot more open about my feelings then my brother and even though he didnt want to hear what you had to say I played it very loud on my PC speakers. I love all of your videos but this one hit home and brought a few tears to my eyes and I thank you. Stay Awesome!
Hang in there brother, don’t give up! Get out there and get your life and happiness back. Is many not be exactly getting the same car back, but getting a car you really want. Be strong, live and love life. You will rise!
You kept pushing. Forwards, backwards - doesn't matter. If it would be forward, good for you, since it was backwards - it's good too, you've learned. Really it's the stagnation that eats a man away.
Hey Winston, I discovered your channel very recently and have become enthralled with some of the subjects you discuss. I'v thoroughly enjoyed your firsthand accounts of Chinese culture and society. Keep up the good work! This video however really struck a nerve. As a young person struggling to figure out what I want to do in life, you've said some things I really needed to hear. Thank you. P.S. I hope you're enjoying your trip to America 🙂
I can’t stop watching and I am really happy you. I am a firm believer in working hard to build your life and finding your place in the world. After failing my GCSE Exams and A-Levels I thought my life was over, I blamed other people who caused me mental problems but I realised that it didn’t matter that they caused my problems... it mattered that I was using that as an excuse and i needed to fix those problems. I reset my English and Maths GCSE and worked on my A-Levels. For the last 3 years, I worked hard every day. I found my passion in VFX. I went from failed student to top of my class. I’m now heading to university and Im now much happier. I have a future and hope because I worked hard. Work hard, find your opportunities, don’t make excuses and you can go very far.
Great Vid, I totally relate, I was a stock broker in US made good $$$ and right b4 Lehman collapse I left the financial industry to start a business in Quigdao (huge risk) (many challenges) but I learned more about business working one year in China than via a 4-year business school in US. I don't agree with some peeps that your vids are negative towards China, i think they are realistic and i can attest, are quite accurate. Plain and simple, taking (calculated!) risks is what advancing in life is about. I am new to your channel and trying to catch up to your vlogs but your vlog on risk&failure really resonated with me. I have a business partner in Shenzhen (know the area quite well) hope we can even meet up some day. I would gladly share couple of my stories with you. Looking forward to watching your documentary and becoming a patron on your website.
@serpentza: Listen Serpentza. I am a 23 year old Doctoral Student from the USA. Haven't lived in another state let alone in another country alone with no help from family or friends debt-free. You have done that on two different continents. That to me and to many others is SUCCESSFUL. Keep up the excellent work and continue to grow into a mighty serpent Serpentza. God Speed & Many Blessings.
I sold my property portfolio after my divorce in the UK and traveled through Asia. I met a girl in Laos, a relatively small country between Thailand and Cambodia. Love the girl and the people..
I stumbled upon your channel, and I really like how you use retro elements in your videos (the music, cassette players, VHS, etc..) It definitely differentiates you from similar content. Great stuff, cheers from Poland :D
I'm so happy that you have met the right woman, beer girl was not for you. I could tell by your face that you were not happy so start smiling more now you have found the right person to share your life. All the best, be happy and stay positive x
After moving to China, I had only 8 kuai in my pocket when I received my first pay check. Never ate store noodles again. I understand the feeling of no longer having to worry about money anymore.
Me too... I came with a crazy debt, even the flight was ONE way and borrowed money... good risk i took and i love living in china! its awesome and amzing!
I love your videos, ADV China, and CMilk's! This is my personal favorite and I have watched so many! Maybe it's because I am at a crossroads in life myself and am scared to take some risks that I would like to. It is nice to hear that failure (or perceived failure) can actually lead to something wonderful if you are bold enough to take some risks and put yourself out there! Thank you for this video! You have helped me at a low point in my life! Forever grateful to find this older video at this particular time in life! Especially, seeing all the success you have achieved since 2016, with C-Milk, ADV China (and now so many other countries) and happily married with a baby on the way! Congratulations!! You are so inspiring to this American, 37 year old who is trying to start over and feeling unsure about everything!
Winston, I would love videos about you running out of money for hotel, getting back on your feet, and becoming/being homeless. I need to mitigate the risks by being able to cope until I find success
Your video is very inspirational. As a Chinese Canadian, I have been doing videos of my roots in Chinese culture, cooking, history and events. Early on, I watched your videos to help me when I travelled to China. You continue to inspire me. Good luck in all your endeavours. Sincerely, Dan Seto, Chinese Canadian Roots TV.
***** In the past I probably have been accused of the opposite, with ethnocentric bias about being too Canadian. For me, it's about recognizing my Chinese roots but I am Canadian first. Thanks for your comments and for expressing your view.
+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV) I have never accused a Chinese Canadian of forgetting that they are Canadian but I once said the opposite after being blasted by a woman from a dating site. I don't recall what I said but it was not malevolent. I was accused of having China fever, stereo-typing, etc. ... I said to her that "I doubt you have even been to China" or something along those lines ... apparently she had been to Hong Kong for 2 weeks once.
Allan Drake This is sort of a complex subject so I don't want to offend anyone. I'll only speak about my own situation. As a Canadian born Chinese, I always felt offended if a non-Chinese person asked if I was from China. I also felt offended if a Chinese person from overseas asked me if I could speak Chinese or asked me if I knew about Chinese culture. I always felt like I was different from Canadians and also different from Chinese in China. After I finally visited China, I came to accept my similarities to people in China and also came to accept differences with them. I know I am Canadian, but my roots are from China. I'm not sure if my answer will help you understand the encounter with the woman on the dating site.
+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV) Yeah I get that you might be mildly offended but being overtly offended seems like an over-reaction ... something to do with patriotism and heritage. In the comment that I had made I believed that I was simply flirting with a very pretty younger lady and her reaction was not anticipated. Based on that experience (perhaps unfairly), I now assume Chinese Canadians to be nothing at all like native mainland Chinese in their attitudes and way of of thinking even if the person is less than one generation removed from living in China. Perhaps you had to be there to understand but it was one of those ... 'what the heck?' moments. I think Serpentza has an old video that touches on this topic and every other topic already.
Failure isn't fatal. ... Except when it is. Churchill said what worked for himself. Is it good life advice to try and be like someone else, to live someone else's life? Let's also not forget that Churchill was maybe not a good role model considering all his dark sides. I wouldn't put him up as an icon for a better future. We need to have higher standards or nothing will ever change.
🙄... 🤔... It is still necessary to have the will, the strength and the capacity ... To challenge oneself to individual and collective, To face his fears and fears in a collective way but to assume them individually ... The trauma / suffering, the culture, of one not being that of the other ... Love is a garden that keeps up with the weather ... weather ... and seasons ... And it is the words and deeds of both that gives value to the fruits at harvest ... And that make you think it's worth it or worth it ... (money does not make happiness but there is contibue ... it's an ingredient ... more than a condiment ... or a pattern of beak ... 😉 ...)
goognam goognws Hmm... 1st guy being Elon Musk? I wonder what it is that they do with the white guys in SA, they seem to come out so mature, stoic and oddly likeable.
I was inspired, in many aspects. Thanks again to make this video and be so honest in front of the camera. It's really not easy to share all these things although I believe everyone must have gone through a similar thing. This video also encouraged me to speak out the dark story of my life without fear. You really changed something in me and I will keep spreading out the courage I got from this video. Thanks.
Hey I just purchased your series on Vimeo. This is some very serious good stuff. I am so fascinated by those videos I can't take my eyes off of them. I get to see things from China through you videos that people rarely ever get to see. They make me want to go there so badly. To anyone that wants to watch those videos they are well worth the very small charge (and I telling you it's a very small charge!!!) that you have to pay to see them! I am happy with the quality of the video and clearly get to see the beautiful views that you show in them. I wish you well in all your endeavors. I have watched your videos over a long period of time. And you are a man of your word, your videos have continued to provide interest over time. To anyone who's interested I'm just the usual guy who happen to come across serpentza on the internet.
Sesquipedaliofobia very very true. 1 million isn't much when you have to pay mortgage and bills like alimony for the majority. even a millionaire can feel poor
This documentary is self-funded?! Man you're dedicated people. The trailer looks like it's some big budget tv program. Good luck in the future man with more projects and publicity.
Having just discovered you, am splurging on your videos, and I just want to say what a fantastic role model you are for young guys. Your honesty and directness is just great and so good to find in this world of almost thought control. Everyone's so mentally monitored in what they say all down to, (as far as I can see), the pc message that surrounds us here in the UK. It's like a 3d blandness, and then there's the opposite extreme of those who set out to offend which isn't your approach at all. Am glad you've found happiness, and I look forward to watching all of your output. Stay awesome !
Serpentza your story's are what we need to hear in these dark times, as a voice of encouragement to everybody. You may think your bringing us down, but; your actually speaking to people everywhere who need someone to rally the fight for a better life and better things. I believe in you brother and will fight for the hopes and dreams of a better world and life for everybody. And when I die, I hope to leave something great behind for people to remember. You've given us insight to self re-evaluation to throw off the things that can only hold us back. I've read the comments of the people you've inspired to strive for improvement of the Chines culture. You've planted a seed that will grow into an army of people rooter to the same cause. ("Ooooop's I thinks I'm rambling") Well anyway; what I'm trying to say hear, is there great videos. And you put a lot of heart into them. Love the journey my Brother.
Wishing you all the best of luck. Having a similar story to share with you I can only say that truer words have never been said. I myself left SA in 1975 after having sold my Air conditioning business in Johannesburg. Also not worth a lot after all was said and done, at a time when the economy started to go south back in the mid 70's. I am now retired in Los Angeles with a net worth over $2,000,000 Dollars. two great sons, a lovely wife and a house in a great and safe neighborhood and wake up every day so glad that I took the chance which everyone said was dumb at the time. Keep up the good word and yes absolutely taking a calculated risk is always worth it.
@dooder. To be frank, the coverage of elected officials has always been one sided and media seemed to be complicit with cover ups - then and now. I am a poster child for the old, how do you have 2 million in the market? Start with 4. All kidding aside, live within your means and success is more easily achieved. I have been taking risks all my life and unfortunately sometimes they have not paid off. Good luck.
A baby boomer? What are you smoking? Have you watched the video? Growing up in South Africa where everything you own is second hand and you are in debt all the time- he didn't have some kind of right place right time thing. He lost everything and was homeless for a while too - just watch the video and listen to his story. then, after that, make comments. Your comments do not fit this guy's story. Baby boomer, no frickin' way.
@dooder I just fit within the boomers years. When I got out of school (which I paid for working as a house painter) the economy was starting to feel the effects of loan write-offs for latin america debt. Gyrations in central bank policies and new technologies took most american investors on a roller coaster ride. Coupled with politicians expanding government handouts, it proved to be too much for the debt market. The issues we face today all stem from people who can vote themselves a raise
Winston, I am in a bit of a rut myself in life and found this really inspirational. Did you ever make the series on how you got off your feet in China?
I'll just have to watch them all then! Either way love the content, keep up the good work, and I wish you, your family, and all of your UA-cam China counterparts the best!
I watched it, it was good too. Some people might not like all the sharing but, really its an honor to have someone share their inner most thoughts and feelings on their decisions in life.
I would say, not only from SA but anywhere in the World there is a white man in plight, in danger because of its skin color. I am South American, but had to travel to the other side of the planet simply because Europe wouldn't take me in. I could have done like many whites in my country, just go to Europe anyway and try to get legal after some plights, but that is not like my mindset work, I don't think I would have the courage to go to another country, stay ilegally hoping to get the papers someday. I watch in disbelief every single day Europe taking in people who want to destroy its values. Meanwhile I am here in Japan, fleeing from violence toward whites
Let me see how much I am worth. Current status: Poor college student trying to get into med school Net Worth: -$165,000 😂😂😭😭😭 By the way, as always, great advices and video. Hope you keep up the good work and good luck this year!
+Ao-No ichi - Of course you're not only worth what you own, but it can be helpful to calculate your net-worth this way. It really puts things into perspective and enables you to look at things differently, probably better even.
Nice video, I've watched a ton of your videos, including your series on Amazon Prime and this, by far is your best. Thanks for some insight into your life and in a way giving people hope to make those scary leaps and take risks. As of today I think your patreon is over 3k per month, it's very well deserved as you make lots of quality entertainment. Keep it up Winston!!
You are fascinating. I don't complement many people in this way but I find your journey in life similar to mine in that you choose the continent of Asia to be the place in which to change your life for the positive and you found a perfect mate to share your continued journey. keep it going brother. You get it!
Well said! I took a big risk myself. I moved to China a few months ago with a goal in mind: Making videos and films and eventually living off those film and video projects... If you guys have a few minutes to spare, I'd love to know if you think I'm on the right track. Thanks!
Really needed this video right now Winston! Currently feeling stuck in life and looking for some inspiration to do new things, explore my passions, and not be so scared to lose what I have or fail. Thanks mate.
Hi Winston you are very admirable. You have taken risk, worked through adversity and are achieving success. Many people are either too lazy and demotivated or they are afraid of change or failure. You have conquered these things and taken charge of your life. I wish you more success with all your endeavours. Keep the good videos coming.
Hey Winston. I've been watching your (and C-Milk's) channels for a few months here from Brazil. This one was a great talk. Hope it inspires lots of people. Just knew about Conquering South China video and bought it on Amazon. Very good job. I'm a Top Gear/Grand Tour fan and really enjoy cars, trips and the personal touch in good video productions. You guys are up to great things. Congratulations! Here's to a great northern China adventure, and video!
Do not be unfair to yourself. When you manage to live a decent life on the income you have, you are successful. Being rich and worthless as a human being won't be a success. A tiny bee succeeds in making sweet honey.
Hello Winston, I'm a filmmaker that will be heading out to live in Beijing on the 15th. I'll be teaching English, but I plan to make a number of films from all over the country. What's the best way to get in contact with you? I'd love to discuss potentially being a part of your dream of making films of your adventures. It's been a huge dream of mine as well, and it makes me ecstatic to find others like me. I plan to use a quadcopter I own to film beautiful places in China, but would love to work with you. Perhaps we could have lunch when I hop down to Hong Kong to renew my visa in two months?
+House Fire Media No disrespect mate but I looked at your website and all your stuff are utter clichéd sh I mean nonsense. The Wix website is eyesore inducing. I'm sure you're a lovely person.
+Menko like I said, the videos on the channel I'm commenting with we made back in high school. My more professional work is spread across various channels since I'm a free lance worker. What wix website are you referring to? If you're talking about my Day 47 Media website, I'm not sure how you found it, because I have no links to it on this channel.
Great stuff. I backpacked around China for a month in 1986. It was an amazing experience. Watching some of your videos brought it all back. Good luck in your future. Tim
Thank you Winston. It can be really helpful when people you look up to share a look into their "past failures" if you can call it that. Makes us feel normal to be human.
+serpentza As I've said recently, I am relatively new follower of your videos. Although, I do not know how I got found your channel (probably it was some suggestion, related to motorbikes), but I liked it and appreciated it, "almost" instantly :) . After I have watched a few more, I've decided to subscribe (right now, I am not really in the position to fund or to "patronate" your channel), also sharing some of myself in PM. Nowadays, i just try to watch your videos, not necessarily in right time-order, but randomly. All by all, let me say for *THIS* particular video: a simple, but big THANK YOU! You've declared a lot, of which I can relate with (beginning form a "debt-free" concept of living and closing with that Churchill's quote), unfortunately at this very moment, I have not much people around me, to whom I could share the same (practically most of them, see me as an alienated moron), so it's a kind of reassurance that I am not the only one with this view... (more of the reason and causality one should search in Zimbardo's Stanford experiment regarding obedience #socialconformity) So, thanks again! :)
The video poster just had a bad experience himself and that's why he left. South Africa has many amazing things going for it such as cheap cost of living, excellent weather, low pollution, low population density, friendly people, good infrastructure, amazing locally grown food, nice big houses for cheap, etc.
If you think things are expensive in South Africa, you should go live in other countries, average house in UK for example costs 200k pounds (R3.5m), in SA the average house costs just over R1m.
I went to South Africa last year, I thought it was amazing. I was really worried about personal safety before going there but I felt very safe when I was there. I spent all my time with locals who took me around. They told me it's relatively safe if I stay with them but it can be dangerous for solo travelers. Which city did you live in SA?
Cool. I spent a few days in Pretoria and then went to Barberton. On the way back to Pretoria the next day sitting in the car I couldn't stop thinking how perfect that highway would be for riding a motorcycle. I want to go back to SA and do a motorcycle trip some day.
I know right its like the comment section is filled with racist trolls commenting about a place they've never been to. Here's a thought, if you don't like things in a place (especially if its not your own) then A. don't go there or B. move out and live your life elsewhere! as simple as that
Defcon 2 pointing fingers. Why not ask why those that live in those cities are in such circumstances? And how are you making a difference. Or does it not concern you? We all can and should do our best. But first let’s make it possible for ALL to improve!
Wonder how it got that way? Just as the American urban communities. What could have possibly disenfranchised those communities? Is it solely on the shoulders of THOSE people? Good Lord some folks are completely ignorant and self righteous.
I actually really needed to hear your story and where you are and where you came from. I have some similar experiences and it helps to hear from someone who's lived it. I will definitely check out your documentary.
Bravo Winston! It takes a lot to stand up in front of a camera for the world to see and discuss your failures. Something I found is if you say, you own it, and that's how we grow and move on. Thanks for sharing.
@Serpentza could you make a video about Chinese retirement system? To be exact: how does the government take care of the elderly? I think that just the fact that they do that is unknown to many people.
+Yeop Kim Strange point of view you got there. I believe that elders deserve to be taken care of by the young generation. Just like we are working on improving and sustaining the community we call "state", they did the same, when they were young. I believe that a working person deserves the governments...no, OUR help, when they are old, since it was every single one of them, who made our homelands what they are. That's how I feel it, even though there I things I could blame the older generations for. But I don't, because it was their work, that allowed me to have the good life I have
In civilised societies, the elderly were looked after, from the Greeks, the Romans, the Incas - the Inca empire had a system where the elderly were looked after by a welfare state, that was more than 500 years ago, go and look it up. Yes, I know Koreans 500 years ago were eating their own faeces and pointing to the sun but the rest of the world were far more advanced.
Andrei Andreev interesting comment. I think I can guess at some of what you mean, but could you explain some? I assume you're not saying Serpentza is evil, but just commenting on the need for reflection on life's experiences in order to understand and contextualize them, and to find meaning beyond the will to act on impulse and for self alone. Am I guessing your meaning correctly?
It's important - but the way he's saying it reminds me strongly of how politicians reply when facts from their recent career come up or are brought up. And instead of explaining this and that - they would say "i don't like to dwell on the past". And if the media doesn't "dwell" properly - they get to become president. Just sayin'
Great video! I've had similar situations and I've found what you've said to be so true for me as well. Yes I'm married now to a great Chinese woman after realizing that I needed to get out of a bad situation and then not getting married again until I just knew it was right. I also know you have to take risks, get out there, do it! I've seen this work in small and big ways. I'm also getting ready to sell off things I don't need to make my next big move. Thanks again and good luck! You just added a new sub.
Beautiful video, mate. Glad to be partnered with you in our new endeavors.
really enjoy the two of u in vlogs yizs work well as a team
Pollution is fine where I am. I lost like 15 kg. so that's probably it haha.
+laowhy86 : a quick question, mate. Do u have a 10 years china visa?
No. There is no 10 year work visa for China. Even the 10 year travel visa for China requires you to leave every few months or so. It's not that big of a deal. Also, you can't work on a travel visa.
+laowhy86 : I heard on the news last year china new policy change 10 years. Are you sure?
This man is a very successful communicator and smart and decent human being.
Normally I would never donate any money to a UA-camr but your videos are so genuine and entertaining that I'm not going to hesitate pledging some money to help you create more videos for us. $10 a month to you is the better entertainment I could get anywhere else. Stay Awesome!
+Tony Si mate, thank you for your generosity! I hope that I won't disappoint! Plenty of more videos coming soon!
+serpentza Hey serpentza, when you get your cash from patreon and youtube if that is USD, and if it's virtual, how do you get that to RMB
I would do the same, very humbled by this.
I don't even watch TV anymore, not even the news. It's all BS. It's the people at the top pushing some agenda by trying to steer public opinion in a direction that benefits some special interest group. It's manipulation. I'd rather watch videos like this. It's much more genuine and real.
Tony Si Are you a self loathing ..... ?
Thanks Winston. You have courage and an inner strength. I admire those qualities. You are a good man.
I saw this video years ago and came back to watch it again because I thought it inspirational. It's really something to see how your channel and life has grown. That's great! I'm surprised to see that you still read and reply to comments on old videos. I like that. Keep staying awesome.
me too
Don't worry too much about the technicalities of your video production....the value of your channel is your openness, honesty and wisdom. Your courage is very inspirational!!
Carl Hopkinson - yes! Good advice! It's the openness and the thoughtfulness that make his videos so good. No need to put a lot of additional effort into production.
I realize this is the case. This guy is amazingly courageous in life.
Hey Serpentza, part of the reason I chose to learn mandarin in the first place was because of your videos. Four years later I'm here taking a year abroad in Beijing and I couldn't be happier with the experiences I've had over these past few months. I wish you best of luck with your documentary!
stay away from that gutter oil friend
+kcrone1 lol
Dam, I can't stop watching this guy.
There is something about his videos that's really catching, like Vice documentaries.
it's his suit and way of presenting lol
Yeah I'm on a binge right now. Started from the first video.
I know what you mean. Happens to me to
dig dem oil changes
The documentation of your life experience is very appreciated especially for young people who may be in more or less in the same situation, I like your resilience, determination and genuine, sincere exposure of personal feelings and experiences of your life. That made me send this video to my son to learn from. You are awesome and stay Awesome.
It’s a pleasure mate! We’re all on this crazy journey through life together
Bro I’m black African and that thing about family pressure to have a family is what I’ve been through, now I have a kid with her and all is mayhem, wrong woman and damn we really get screwed by social pressure.
Your honesty is what makes your videos so good. I'm happy for you.
I agree.
Oprah! My God man! You did hit rock bottom!
I sure did
I know. He should have been watching you. 😊
I used to watch Oprah every day as a kid, ¿What's wrong with that show? I remember it being super popular...
黑龍 - Hắc Long, Oprah is a billionaire socialist elitist.
Rock bottom is Rikki Lake and Maury in the morning followed by Oprah in the afternoon.
Stay Awesome!
that sucks, what country are you in? Hope you make it, sometimes you just have to grind it through
Hang in there brother, don’t give up!
Christopher. I had a Maruti. Honda? Pfff show off 😄
@@PuerRidcully stagnation eats a man away..so true
thanks for your vulnerability. i have so much respect for you. love your videos.
+gepettobrent thank you! I seriously appreciate that
Hey Winston, I discovered your channel very recently and have become enthralled with some of the subjects you discuss.
+Ryan Wilson thanks mate and welcome to the channel!
Well done, mate. Truly Impressive determination and perseverance, I like your outlook in life.
Thank you Winston for sharing your story.
Very timely your message is for me personally. You set a great example.
Stay Awesome 👍
Don't be afraid of progressing slowly, instead be afraid of standing still.
+Darrell Robinson I am a Doctoral Student from China.Also I take Winston as a model.He's a brave man!
a few nice comments = maybe you're on the right track.
trolls = affirmation you're on the right track.
keep on keeping on
+God thanks mate, always good to hear from the Almighty
I sold my property portfolio after my divorce in the UK and traveled through Asia. I met a girl in Laos, a relatively small country between Thailand and Cambodia. Love the girl and the people..
You would be excellent as an audiobook reader or meditation instruction giver. Your voice is so even and calming haha.
I stumbled upon your channel, and I really like how you use retro elements in your videos (the music, cassette players, VHS, etc..) It definitely differentiates you from similar content. Great stuff, cheers from Poland :D
+dnplk thanks mate!
Grossed out from Katowice
Good luck - you're still young and still have time to try new things out.
@@freespirit6209 thank you!! 🤗
Very inspiring.
I wouldn’t have expected this type of video from you, yet the message is very true.
I’ll keep watching and keep being awesome.
+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV)
I have never accused a Chinese Canadian of forgetting that they are Canadian but I once said the opposite after being blasted by a woman from a dating site.
+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV)
Yeah I get that you might be mildly offended but being overtly offended seems like an over-reaction ... something to do with patriotism and heritage.
Dude it really does not matter..let's be a decent human beyond ethnic and nationalistic boundaries
Thank you, you are so genuine! I can relate on this so much.Hope you continue to inspire us.
Failure isn't fatal. It's the courage to continue. Thx!
Thanks for your incite! I've had bad times in my life, your words are inspiring and it makes me keep going.
You are the 2nd S.A. guy from european decent i know, both impressingly honest and a man's man.
goognam goognws Hmm... 1st guy being Elon Musk? I wonder what it is that they do with the white guys in SA, they seem to come out so mature, stoic and oddly likeable.
Thomas Scream They do them up the wrongen !
Profoundly inspiring, Winston. Thank you !
You're doing a good job. Following your dreams
So your parents actually named you after Churchhill? That's awesome.
He is not richer who the most has, but who the least needs.
Sesquipedaliofobia Ohhh very deep, I like it!
Sesquipedaliofobia very very true. 1 million isn't much when you have to pay mortgage and bills like alimony for the majority. even a millionaire can feel poor
Preaching the virtue of poverty is how rich people keep themselves rich and others poor.
🙄... 🤔...
Then I'll become a rock.
You're awesome and a real man figure.
you getting bald man !!!!....
You clearly don't know much about him if you think that David.
Tristan Goddard Lol, oh yes he does!
That's a lot of assumptions and projections on someone you don't know.
David Beecroft Go fuck yourself.
Winston was a lot more emotional in this video
it's not easy to make a 24 minute video interesting and compelling - great work. Your honesty and character really come through.
So happy UA-cam bought this video back. I'd love to hear an update on this, your reflections on where you were vs where you are now.
Winston, I am in a bit of a rut myself in life and found this really inspirational. Did you ever make the series on how you got off your feet in China?
The series sort of ended up being absorbed by my other videos
I'll just have to watch them all then! Either way love the content, keep up the good work, and I wish you, your family, and all of your UA-cam China counterparts the best!
I watched it, it was good too. Some people might not like all the sharing but, really its an honor to have someone share their inner most thoughts and feelings on their decisions in life.
South Africa will soon be just like Zimbabwe.
It was Boers country though. They took it from no one.
Meanwhile I am here in Japan, fleeing from violence toward whites
my name is my name I always wonder were people are from when I read comments like yours.
Let me see how much I am worth.
Current status: Poor college student trying to get into med school
Net Worth: -$165,000
😂😂😭😭😭
By the way, as always, great advices and video. Hope you keep up the good work and good luck this year!
Also, I would love to support you on patreon, but at the current moment my financial status will not allow me. Good luck man!
+Ao-No ichi The bank however won't care as they will expect that money back.
+Ao-No ichi - Of course you're not only worth what you own, but it can be helpful to calculate your net-worth this way. It really puts things into perspective and enables you to look at things differently, probably better even.
wow...that net worth will at least double in the negative direction after med school. Good luck!
You get it!
I'd love to see a 2019 update of this video.
I'd like to see mid 2020 update, after he fled China under threat of being arrested and then disappear.... :)
You've just earned another subscriber :D
Continue making videos!
+Alex H thanks mate,welcome!
Well said!
I took a big risk myself. I moved to China a few months ago with a goal in mind: Making videos and films and eventually living off those film and video projects...
If you guys have a few minutes to spare, I'd love to know if you think I'm on the right track.
Thanks!
Don't expect to make more than a few tens of dollars from Y T.
You are awesome Winston!
Keep at it my friend!
Your video changing my life. Thank You so much.
Stay Awesome mate!
Don't mean to come across as a lick ass but damn, you should be an inspirational speaker. You've got a great presence on camera.
+Iroquois Pliskin Thanks man, I hope this video can help people get through some of the rough spots I've had to endure over the years :)
+Skip Roche Thank's Skip, the thumbs up is heartily appreciated!
I cant applaud you more for the bravery and resilience of this video and your reasons for making it.
Really good take on life.
The stuff on the channel I'm commenting with is work I did a number of years ago, haha. Hence the lack in quality. I can send you some better work.
+BuleBritish I would be willing to meet up for sure! I'll shoot you a message.
House Fire Media Do you have newer work you can link to?
Your a good man. Keep following your dreams!
Great stuff. I backpacked around China for a month in 1986. It was an amazing experience. Watching some of your videos brought it all back. Good luck in your future. Tim
Thank you Winston. It can be really helpful when people you look up to share a look into their "past failures" if you can call it that. Makes us feel normal to be human.
thank you for making your videos
Ricky lake? wow you hit rock bottom eh?

When you were talking about migrating my thought was giving up your stuff was nothing, but of course the people would probably be something else.
I Love How honest and frank You are. You are a great communicator.
I followed your channel for a long time, this is the first time you talked about your past experience. Hope you enjoy your life in China. Good luck.
(more of the reason and causality one should search in Zimbardo's Stanford experiment regarding obedience #socialconformity)
So, thanks again! :)
+KoborLo77 mate, glad you found the video useful! Hang in there and stand your ground
thanks Winston, I do ... "stayin' awesome" :D
Make a tutorial on how to marry a doctor model. Asking for a friend...
Okay
wow south Africa sounds awful
The video poster just had a bad experience himself and that's why he left. South Africa has many amazing things going for it such as cheap cost of living, excellent weather, low pollution, low population density, friendly people, good infrastructure, amazing locally grown food, nice big houses for cheap, etc.
I'm from South Africa and most of that isn't true at all, only thing that is true is the food.
So according to you guys, this dude is a failure because his total wealth after years of hard work in a big company is only 8K USD??
Fang Qu he's not a failure, things are expensive and hard in South Africa, the exchange rate Rand = Dollar is very bad
If you think things are expensive in South Africa, you should go live in other countries, average house in UK for example costs 200k pounds (R3.5m), in SA the average house costs just over R1m.
So inspiring at the end. You made me tear up at a very tough time in my life. Thank you, and Happy Christmas.
This video is very on point about risks and really being in tune with what you are working for and towards. Great observations.
I went to South Africa last year, I thought it was amazing. I was really worried about personal safety before going there but I felt very safe when I was there. I spent all my time with locals who took me around. They told me it's relatively safe if I stay with them but it can be dangerous for solo travelers. Which city did you live in SA?
Johannesburg
Cool. I spent a few days in Pretoria and then went to Barberton. On the way back to Pretoria the next day sitting in the car I couldn't stop thinking how perfect that highway would be for riding a motorcycle. I want to go back to SA and do a motorcycle trip some day.
Oh... I want to visit South Africa, but Johannesburg is one spot I know to keep my eyes open. But I imagine Cape Town might be safer.
I know right its like the comment section is filled with racist trolls commenting about a place they've never been to. Here's a thought, if you don't like things in a place (especially if its not your own) then A. don't go there or B. move out and live your life elsewhere! as simple as that
Couldn't find the playlist you mentioned about how you settled in China. Help plz?
You have to be very strong and brave to be in China, everyday is a battle there 👍
I greatly appreciate your candor. Now watching all your videos. Especially learning about life in China.
I watched the documentary and enjoyed it. I'm glad you turned things around and remember, hindsight is always 20/20, love. Keep on keeping on! PEACE
South Africa was paradise lost.
No wonder Elon Musk left.
South Africa sounds a lot like chicago
Or Baltimore, or Memphis, or Detroit, or Mogadishu...
The crime is on a whole other scale in SA though. The stress of brutal and violent crime is a heavy added stress.
It is🤗
Defcon 2 pointing fingers.
But I don't, because it was their work, that allowed me to have the good life I have
+Yeop Kim - They have paid in their share of tax, near enough every single civilised society takes care of their old. Name me one that didn't?
In civilised societies, the elderly were looked after, from the Greeks, the Romans, the Incas - the Inca empire had a system where the elderly were looked after by a welfare state, that was more than 500 years ago, go and look it up. Yes, I know Koreans 500 years ago were eating their own faeces and pointing to the sun but the rest of the world were far more advanced.

I could not agree more.
Artyom Petrovich Falin - Thanks man, I gave your comment a thumbs up, I find Yeop's view very strange as would most people. Keep the faith, Artyom!
To much telling us that in next VLOG I will tell u ...! Just tell us or I will die of boredom
"I don't like to dwell on the past" famous words from very bad people :)
Just sayin'
once again sharing your valuable experience in public, "...awesome..."
still the greatest video on youtube to motivate me to think about moving abroad and finding myself
